Danny Who? of Boxing News?

Post by thespy »

Danny Flexen?

Danny Who?

All of a sudden this kid thinks he is god's gift to boxing, who the f&^k is he?

Has anyone seen his blog? First he was slagging off Birmingham saying he didn't care if he wasn't going, now he's moaning about Steve Saville being an opponent for Golden Boy Sid even though he's 16 and 4, then goes onto to say Siddique has to fight someone decent and then names Gary Reid who is not exactly a world beater

Bring back the Connolly's this kid is an absolute arsehole who's knowledge of boxing could be written on the back of a 2nd class stamp.

Maybe he should have cut his teeth with seconds out he's about their level, he probably thinks Roman Greenberg is good too!

How long before he gets a smack in the teeth, he's probably already being targetted in Wigan tonight especially as Sid and Saville are both on the card!!

Lol, i've not read his blog, have you a link to it?
He is doing well in the boxpicks league though!
There was quite a big thing when a job came up in boxing news, with Tris Dixon getting the job, then Danny Flexen flies in under the radar getting a job without any fanfare!
I was always a big fan of Mark Butcher

He was on fire with his preview picks first few weeks (I even sent in a letter commending him) but he's been way off in recent weeks, napping Simpson, Pickering and (I think) Oakey in the last few Friday Fight Nights! Oh Danny Boy...

Poorly designed site and full of errors.

If it was 5 years old then fair enough, but a brand new site launched in 2008 ? appalling.

Give a young writer an online column and he's going to spill some bile, surely?

This sounds rather bitter and too much like a personal attack from someone with an axe to grind. I personally am not that big a fan of his writing style on the blog - but a blog is meant to be personal thoughts and experiences rather than journalism.

I read it and really don't think it's very controversial. I find Danny's writing in BN to be perfectly decent - certainly much better than Senior writer Tris Dixon and a world away from the awful Zachary Levin......

I also miss Mark Butcher's writing and would like to see Nick Bond write more (he's the art editor but does write up some amateur shows with professionalism.)

PS - After watching the pad sessions I think Nick would stop Tris, despite the big weight difference!!!!.....I believe they both boxed as amateurs....

What boxing writing did he do before that? Never heard the name on any websites or anything. Websites are good practise for getting into magazine work. I suppose he could be a qualified journalist which may have got him the job, or poss has the web design skills that the BN job required.

Just read it. Christ on a bike :o

How can he analyse a fight he hasn't even seen?! What's frustrating is that several talented Writers that currently don't have the chance to work for a prestigious Boxing publication like BN aren't able to. There's Writers on BBN that I'd consider far more worthy of the position.

I read this blog post and it seems fine: http://www.boxingnewsonline.net/BN08/detail.asp?id=474

I like the style it's written in.

This is what irked me mate:

"The post-fight piece on the Sunday was more problematic for one slight obstacle…

I hadn’t seen the fight. Setanta always have a replay on the Sunday at midday and I’d checked this on Saturday. But I found out too late. The replay was on Setanta 2, which you don’t get on Freeview. We bluffed it okay except for the point when I said Pac finished Diaz off with a jab. I tried to steer away from any analysis of the actual fight but dropped that bit in to show off. You know, what a tough guy, winning with a jab…doh! Teletext on Sky had said it was a jab but when I eventually watched the replay at 11pm, I realised that Sky teletext don’t realise that some boxers are southpaws and that Manny’s straight left was a super shot. Oh well, cheque please, don’t call us…"

I think it's good of him to admit it. Fair enough, he shouldn't have reported on it in the first place, though.

God he's such a bore, such a joyless miser. These boxing journalists need to liven up a bit

I fell asleep 6 times whilst reading his piece on David Haye, and masturbated twice

I don't mean this with any disrespect to Danny, but he comes across more as a journalism graduate than an ex-boxer. IE, lots of opinions no real experience. If Danny is/was an experienced amateur, accept my apologize.

What is it with this continued insistence you need to have boxed in order to be qualified to write about boxing?

Have all the staff at Rolling Stone released records? Has every movie critic at Empire produced their own film?

If you wanted to be really facetious you could add how many Royal correspondents have been members of the Royal Family...

But joking aside, my point was that Danny Flexen comes across as someone who trained as a journalist and then happened to get a job writing for Boxing News. IE someone who was looking for a career in journalism, and happened to find it writing about boxing, rather than someone who had a passion for boxing and so decided to write about it.

But thats exactly what he is?

Most journalists i know lost their passion for their subjects long ago, it kind of gets beaten out of you in the real world

As an aside, i know a few pro's and ex pro's and the thought of them becoming professional journalists is laughable

Yeah- I wasn't saying it was a bad thing (or a good thing) just replying to the thread which was opinions about Danny Flexen. Reading through his blog http://www.boxingnewsonline.net/BN08/detail.asp?id=474 thats how he came across to me.

Personnally, I think that his style (and that of Tris Dixon) is pretty boring. Reading consise reports of shows a week after they happen seems a bit flat, I like writers who are a bit more biting and bitchy!
