i just found this forum and i never knew amateur boxing had a forum. its really awesome to see that. i wish i had known about it earlier.

i was at the golden gloves for the week and there were some pretty good matches.

for the finals, the juniors had a good 101, i think, match with a girl from cali. she looks like she has some real skills and could become a good open fighter.

i thought sacred downing got lucky to get a decision as she did the night before. i disagree with amy about han v. manuel though. han did the best compared to manuel's other opponents but she was getting tagged with clean shots. han ran and held and jabbed but manuel was blocking a lotta shots with her arms and connecting clean with her own jab and power shots. considering how young han is she did really well since manuel was running everyone oever, but i thought as well as the people around me that the decision went to the right boxer. han did manage to beat carrie barry in the semi's in the last two rounds i think

what's up with franchon crews getting help in her matches? i thought she eeked that one out but not by much. she really didn't need to get her hair fixed. lisa kuryona looked pretty good in her match against brittany inkrote. she has a mean right hand.i wish that lisa had moved to 154 so there coulda been a rematch between the two.

marlen esparaza was getting outboxed by heather han which surprised me until esparaza caught han with some nasty punches. i thought the stoppage was early too amy until i saw han later. she looked pretty sick so i guess it was right.

hey mel, i heard that patricia is trained by javier molina's coach. is that true? she also said she's going pro after this. i think she'll do better there. she's very srong....are any of the other girl's turning pro?

It is imperative that any coach, or administrator, putting on any tournament, let alone a national, know the rules. I'm really disappointed in Bonnie - she has been a real force for women's boxing.

She is just the host that is why she brought in a Chief Offical - Kevin Franklin and the rules were followed - she was DQ. And there was a big spread on her in the local paper before the event, do you really think if Canino knew she would promote her to get interest in the event?

Hey- THis was the first time that John Brown and Stan Gallop ever even came to a Women's Golden Gloves- he has only missed one Men's since he became Golden Gloves. A small step but a step all the same

They also had people with under 5 bouts in the tournament. I know it's all for the experience, but still. Kevin Franklin is a good guy and a good official though.

Golden Gloves follows their own rules.
She is just the host
It is my understanding that the pro boxer who had entered trained in her gym. If this is true, she should never have allowed her to enter the tournament.
that is why she brought in a Chief Offical - Kevin Franklin
There is always a COO for every tournament. The host NEVER acts in that capacity.
Hey- THis was the first time that John Brown and Stan Gallop ever even came to a Women's Golden Gloves- he has only missed one Men's since he became Golden Gloves. A small step but a step all the same
And what significance does this have in the grand scheme of things?

TB,
I agree with you on the Han v Manuel bout. Stephanie had an outstanding fourth round in her semifinal big win over Carry Barry. She and her sisters are all sweethearts and good boxers, but she wasnt even close against Patricia Manuel. I lost count of how many over hand rights and clean left hooks Patricia landed. She boxed all four days and steamrolled everyone she faced. The good news for the much younger is Stephanie is that, according to Patricia, this was her last amateur bout and she will be turning pro this fall. I can see Stephanie owning this weight class at this years US Championships.

I also agree with you that Sacred arguably got a couple of gifts in her semi-final and final match. The bouts were close enough for her supporters to make an argument, however. I just think she got hit and scored on too much in this tournament.

Regarding the smaller Han (Heather) and Marlene Esparza, WOW! Little Heather was, in my opinion and the opinion of those sitting near me, up after the first two rounds! She tired out, however, and Esparza pounced. It didnt take long in the fourth for the referee to RSC the match early in the 4th.

Regarding the Junior 101 you mentioned in the finals, that was my fighter, Jessica Ponce, of Napa California! She actually boast a win over this years open class 101 champion at the GG, Laura. We beat her at Ringside last year when she was still a J.O. Jessica will be turning open this fall. Thanks for the kind comments, although I think there is still work to do between now and the fall.

HUGO,
regarding Juniors at this tournament: I think there were a total of about 10 junior olympic boxers in the whole tournament. Ponce was very lucky to even get a bout. Estrada and Nolasco, from southern ca district, both won unopposed. Nolasco was able to box in a matched bout, however. I dont know that I would recommend the trip for a team of junior girls, its more for Open fighters.

And regarding the Nisa Rodriguez and Frenchon Crews bout: Great match! I dont know the scores but Im pretty sure Crews outscored Rodriguez in every round. Rodriguez is STRONG, but she needs her opponents to stand in front of her. Crews probably saw Rodriguez's semi-final, when she stopped her opponent in a match that should have been an RSCH, but was only called an RSC. Crews circled and stopped only long enough to land a few bombs of her own, but never got greedy enough to allow the stronger but slower Rodriguez to land her bombs.

By the way TB, Patricia is trained by Javier Molina's coach. The young man helping him in her corner was Oscar Molina, Javier's brother ( boxed for the Mexican olympic team but didnt make it out of the America's qualifiers). Great kids and coach.

No "Best Boxer" awarded, but I think it would have been Patricia. She steamrolled everyone prior to Han, then beat Han pretty convincingly as well. Great body puncher, I think she will make a good, exciting pro.

I wish Trish would stay around one more year and get a shot at the Women's Worlds; she hasn't won a U.S. Championships, either.

"amy"]I have some of tonights results but not all.

Ivet Pancoatt dec Amy Sowers :(

106: Rochelle Gilken dec Ailein Viera

110: Marlen Esparza RSC4 Heather Han (I thought is was a premature stoppage. Heather seemed to be pretty far ahead and there were only about 30 seconds left of the match)

114: Sacred Downing dec Keisher McLeod The two of them threw maybe 10 punches the entire fight. Everyone pretty much thought that Sacred lost but somehow again, she got the decision, as well as some boos from the crowd.

119: Christina Cruz dec Jackie Trivilino (Christina did the jab and run and Jacquie chased her throwing everything she had but Cruz stayed away and just threw 1-2s and ran)

125: Monica Rumler dec Chasity Trunseth I think these gals were still novices.

[David Marks*]Monica Rumler had had one amateur bout prior to entering this tournament, so your observation is accurate to that extent. Chastity Funseth had engaged in one of the tournament's most exciting bouts in the semi-finals, beating a strong opponent, and no one I spoke to thought that Monica stood any chance of defeating Chastity. I think that Monica did really well for a complete novice, don't you?

132: Patricia Manuel dec Stephanie Han Can't explain that one at all. Both girls are good but Han clearly outboxed her.

138: Althea Martin dec Christina Swanson ...eh, another shakey decision that could have went either way.

145: Lisa Kuronya dec Brittany Inkrote Good bout, both did well but Lisa was just more accurate.

154: Franchon Crews dec Nisa Rodreguez Crews did her usual bully around the ring winging right hands and of course as soon as she got tagged and was in trouble suddenly there was something wrong with her head gear. Funny how that seems to happen to her all the time.

165 and 189 haven't fought yet...

Oh, how funny! I watched her use the same ploy at the U.S. Championships this year, only the ref didn't allow her to get away with it more than once.

Umm - you do know that the refs have no idea how many minutes, or seconds, are left in a match, right? They are too busy focusing on the boxers.

i think that most of the fights went as the judges seen them, and agree with the person who said that marlens fight was close the first two rounds but them body shots started wearing han down in the third, then she got caught with them nasty overhand rights in the fourth, and the stoppage was correct amy,i guess you didnt see han sitting by the doctor the whole night after that.

Kolya,

We have the Mayor's cup coming up in August, but I don't know the date.

Pro wise, the next show is Friday August 8 in DC at a new location, the Ibiza Nightclub.

Oooops - sorry, Amy - I do remember Franchon using the headgear ploy more than once in my ring. And the post about the refs not knowing how many seconds are left in the round was in response to David Marks' post. :D

I have it on tape, I saw several head gear malfunctions and turning her back to get away from contact. She is lucky she won the nationals. I thought she lost reviewing the tape, the judges got clicker happy in the first round. IMO

Tape usually shows only one point of view, so it's impossible to judge using that medium. And, don't forget, computer, not the clicker, scoring is used and it takes 3 out of th 5 judges to push the button for one boxer within a 1 second window. :D

i thought franchon won pretty easy as well as patricia winning pretty easy in the finals, marlen had a bit of a fight for two rounds, then it was to much expierence and power the rest of the fight for the little han.what i was disapointed with was most of the jo fights,i expected more from some of the girls who are jo national champions,i know the girl at 101 from LA jessica fought a girl from my home town (dallas) in the finals and our girl only has 6 fights and gave her a pretty good fight, and i really wanted to see seniesa estrada at 110 fight to see if she had improved any from last time i seen her fight last year at ringside were she got beat from a girl from houston (monica flores) that marlen has beat down in texas on several occasions, jessica looked good but i was expecting her to blew this girl away...
