Greatest South American boxer that never won a world title

Post by elmersalsa »

South America has produced lots of outstanding and excellent fighters. Some of them have never won a world title. Who was the greatest South American fighter of all-time that never won a world title in your view?

There are a couple of good ones in my mind:

Luis Angel Firpo (Argentina)
Oscar Bonavena (Argentina)
Bernardo Caraballo (Colombia)
Mauro Mina (Peru)
Jorge Jose Fernandez (Argentina)
Martin Vargas (Chile)

Eduardo Lausse. He could HIT! He put Gene Fullmer on the canvas, and was set for a title shot before getting two bum decisions and deciding that fighting in America was a waste of time.

He was the first fighter I thought of, though Jorge Fernandez is a strong candidate as well IMO.

Personally, though, I didn't think the loss to Boyd was a bum decision. I also feel some limitations of his were exposed in those two fights (and perhaps that contributed to his decision to return to his homeland and fight softer touches there).

Martin.

Ahumada clearly won a title when he beat Bob Foster.

The "draw" decision was a travesty.
