New York Hotels

Post by Poncey »

Looking for a NY Hotel in September. Have you got any recommendations please? Missus is insisting on at least a 3 star. Ideally near MSG, or easy access to MSG, please.

Client says the Financial District near the United Nations building is pretty good?

Thanks for your help.

Park Central Hotel - 7th Ave 57th St

Stayed there with the missus - bout 15 mins walk (5 mins taxi) from MSG and near Broadway and Times Square

Decent Hotel

I'd much rather get the opinion of someone that definately stayed there. Online reviews can be misleading.

If you want the Financial District i can recommend the Millennium Hilton. I've sent people there and they've always been pleased. The nearby Ritz Carlton is probably nicer but lots more expensive.

I probably can't help if you want a more personal recommendation as i slum it more often than not.

Hampton Inn anyone?

stayed at the 'club quarters' on wall st/william st a couple of years ago. nice place, wasn't expensive and the hotel restaurant ('bull run') does a great 1lb burger.

Pennsylvania Hotel is pretty nasty but bang opposite the main entrance to MSG, and pretty central. Macys two minutes walk away, Empire State two minutes walk.

Last time in the big apple I stayed at NY Metropolitan (formerly Loews) which is good but quite pricey, 10 mins in a cab from MSG or short subway ride

Cabs plentiful outside MSG

Stayed at the Marriott Times Sq, last time, big and brash, right on the plot. Frankie and Johnny's steak house next door, best steak I've ever had.

Depends on your budget and tastes. There is nothing nice immediately around MSG and I'd pass on the financial district as it is a bit quiet at night. Some people like the Time Square hotels, but I'm not a fan of the area, too touristy.

On balance, I'd go to one of the boutique hotels in Meatpacking or Tribeca. Gansevoort is quite cool, I've had a drink in most of them but not stayed in many.

"Calzaghe has returned to training for his September 20 bout with Jones, which has been announced for Madison Square Garden in New York, but which the Welshman hopes could still take place in Cardiff."

Dont know how much can be read into this but its from todays Western Mail - I'd wait untill Team Calzaghe officially announce its in NY before you start booking your flights and hotel rooms.

Spoke to the MSG VP for sports entertainment the other day. The Garden is rented for Sept. 20 for that fight. ($250k downpayment) I'm fairly positive that the promotional group will not be too keen on moving the show to Wales and take that kind of financial hit.

I cant comment on particular hotels as i have always stayed with my mate when i have gone over but i wouldnt worry too much about location. Ignore everyones advice regarding taxis they take ages and are not cheap. The tube system in New York is like no where else is amazing - runs 24 hours a day can get them from almost every street and really cheap. i went for a week and got a 7 day pass to go where ever i wanted for 20 dollars (tenner!). I went to see the knicks and the nearest stop is like a mins walk.

I always use TripAdvisor for hotels has 1000's of reviews for each hotel so is fairly accurate. Obviously someones rating is somewhat swayed by personal taste, what people expect for the money etc but the site has never let me down on a hotel yet.

I am still 50/50 whether to go or not. I can fly for just taxes as work in airline industry and got somewhere to stay but am meant to be going Barbados around the same time so missus might kick my ass. When i thort it was his last fight was gona def make it but now he is saying he will fight on am not so desperate to go as will have to go on my own which aint great fun.
