Did you ask him if he still had that massive stretch limo Tel?

The one that driven around to every rough arse nightclub in Manchester
that would stay unscratched because 'Black Flash' owned it!

He was no1 contender for Chavez and the WBC light welterweight title
around 1991-92. It would have made or a good fight in my opinion.

Used to love watching him fight but find it hard to reconcile the "good guy" personna with the fact that I've heard a few times from different people that he was involved in the whole Manchester gangland scene.

One of my fav fighters when growing up - he had spindly looking legs but could really set himself and bang when he wanted to.

Enjoyed his run of fights on the BBC which usually ended with a brutal KO.

When he finally got his big shot it was on ITV in a really disappointing contest with 'the human spider' Manning Galloway. I was gutted Pat didnt spark him.

I dont usually read stuff that long Tel, but I must confess you held my attention from beginning to end.

A fighter I've not paid enough attention to.

One of my fav fighters at the time .i remember when he went to italy&KO the half decent champion....Did he get banged up on drugs charges few yrs ago??

You have to because this was in the day before every chav and his dog drove one - back in the day when Black Flash was on top of his game the limo was so ostenatious - moreso the fact he would drive it to these rough arse two bob nightclubs in Longsight, Gorton and Hulme and there would never be a scratch on it

Says tons about Pat Barrett - His repuation as someone not to be trifled with and his popularity in the local community.

Very good article Terry. I've heard of Pat Barrett, but I've never saw any of his fights (tbh I thought he was white, might have got him mixed up with Pat Cowdell though).

Pats got a good Cinderella Man type of story behind him, he had a very successful career considering how he started his pro career (i.e. just for the paydays) Area, British and European title holder and World title challenger. It looks as though he became a victim of circumstances and politics when he was at his peak and trying to land the Chavez fight.

Pat Barrett was such a talent he had it all Punch, Speed, Movement, Chin.
How he never won a world title is beyond me, interesting in the interview to hear him talk about moving to welter, i guess if you don't have to make the weight of light welter it does take something out of you in a funny way.
One of my favourite boxers when i was younger.

Good to see he's ok, he did spend a bit of time on the island, but not through choice.

If ever a pair of Brits looked a sure thing to win titles on the same night, it was Barrett-Galloway and Angol-Booze.

Barrett sparked a hatful of guys at light-welterweight but lacked a B-plan if he couldn't get an opponent out of there and was thus vulnerable to the 'boxers'.
Moreover, he didn't bring his power up to welter.

I remember his 4th round KO of an Italian out there it was chilling - one of the best KOs ever. Can't be asked chekcing the records but might have been Patrizio someone or other

Efrem Calamati. Barrett was a big puncher but I think posters are going over the top.

It's interesting that Barrett's another one like Hearns who seemed to 'discover' his power midway through his career - more fuel for the old 'nature vs nuture' debate with regards to KO power...

Witter's another one. He was considered a light-punching stylist until he reinvented himself post-Judah. OK, the only big KO he got at world level was Harris, but still, nobody thought of him as "The Hitter" LITERALLY in the early days.

I think that had as much to do within Witter needing to get work on small shows when he started, they wouldn't be able to afford him as journeymen would want TV money if they were likely to lose inside the distance

Lot of time for Pat, bloody exciting fighter in his heyday, up there with the very best thrill merchants. Just a shame that his big chance came at welter when his real strength was as a light-welter. Not saying he would have beaten Chavez but you know for sure it would have been fun to watch him try.

Since his retirement, BN have probably mentioned Barrett..what, once? Maybe not even that.
Good to see and hear what Pat has been up to after all these years - an absolutely murderous puncher.
Sky mentioned he was in the hall the other night, and I was willing them to get him on camera, but no chance of that.
