New Game-Overrated or Underrated
New Game-Overrated or Underrated
Easy rules, just say briefly if the fighter listed is overrated or underrated, briefly explain why, then pick the next fighter.
I'll throw out the first name
John "The Best" Mugabi

Underrated. When Mugabi hit you, he stayed hit. Let's face it, this kid only challenged Hagler 'cos the light-middles wanted no part of him - Hearns most of all.Seamus wrote:Easy rules, just say briefly if the fighter listed is overrated or underrated, briefly explain why, then pick the next fighter.

Sadly, the Hagler fight took a lot of Mugabi.
Julio Cesar Chavez.
Re: New Game-Overrated or Underrated
15 years ago it wasen't the case, but in 2008, Julio Cesar Chavez has actually become underrated. He was a nonstop punching machine, who could bodypunch with the best of them, and his chin was titanium, and he arguably won his first 87 fights. Chavez is definitely one of boxings alltime greats.

Sorry to interject (Seamus out-typed me! Tired fingers this afternoon) but RE: Chavez. What Seamus said.
Good post.
As for the game:
I'm not quite sure about Nunn. He was very good, but his prime was very short. He looked awful (to me at least, comparing him with his pre-Toney form) in the first Cordoba fight, & I don't think he clawed much back later on. So on balance, maybe over-rated -- he just flattered to deceive.
Next one: Tito Trinidad.

Overrrated. Liston could have been the greatest ever, but only in a World where the previous bests were Cleveland Williams or Nino Valdes.

He could beat some good guys (ie: Bazooka Limon, JL Ramirez), but wasn't mentally/physically tough enough to handle the biggest punchers. He just barely managed to edge Rosario, and then moved up to 140 just to avoid a rematch with him after Rosario KO'd Bramble (even though Camacho had initially said he would fight the winner of that fight, back when everyone thought Bramble was going to win). The only reason he lasted the distance against guys like Chavez, DeLaHoya, Tito, etc. was because he fought so ultra defensively, and was willing to give away almost every round in the process.
Next up: Jose Napoles.

Stupid. And wrong. Ever hear of Edwin Rosario?My2Sense wrote:He could beat some good guys (ie: Bazooka Limon, JL Ramirez), but wasn't mentally/physically tough enough to handle the biggest punchers.
And you're a fool for suggesting that Jose Napoles might be overrated.
Re: New Game-Overrated or Underrated
Interesting contribution to this thread...so what portion of the meaning of the word "game" do you not understand? The process itself which usually entails following some guidelines, or the implication of good natured give and take?Big Bad John wrote:Stupid. And wrong. Re: New Game-Overrated or Underrated
So, he beat one of the biggest punchers in the history of boxing - in his prime, and a future member of the IBHOF to boot - but he can't handle the biggest punchers in the game?
Re: New Game-Overrated or Underrated
Well his point of course ain't necessarily so and certainly subject to critiique.....but now you've gone and changed the subject.Big Bad John wrote:So, he beat one of the biggest punchers in the history of boxing - in his prime, and a future member of the IBHOF to boot - but he can't handle the biggest punchers in the game?

Napoles largely under-rated even amongst boxing 'purists' IMO
hey big bad John- you say Camacho 'handled' Rosario? this is by crapping his drawers and running away for half the fight or more, right? I suppose its one way to handle a puncher.
next- Dwight Muhammad Qawi under-rated or over-rated?
Re: New Game-Overrated or Underrated
Even though he's in the HOF, I think Qawi is a little underrated. At his peak at LHW, he had an excellent chin, great head movement, stamina, applied constant pressure and body punched like a man possessed. In my opinion he would have KO'd Matthew Saad Muhammad 10 times out of 10. At Cruiserweight, he wasen't the quite the same, but was still a pretty good fighter.

What is your fornicating problem? This is about the third or fourth time you reacted like this to one of my posts, and without even barely reading it on top of it. My whole fornicating post talks about the Rosario fight, jackass! What, do you just read the first sentence and then start typing like a maniac?Big Bad John wrote: Stupid. And wrong. Re: New Game-Overrated or Underrated
Qawi's badly, badly overrated. Sure, it's cool that he was a short little fuck who fought at 175, 190 and heavyweight, but in the end, do his wins really warrant induction to the IBHOF? He beat Rossman, Spinks and Saad Muhammad when they were all past it, and folded whenever he faced a top fighter in his prime.

This is a stupid game. We should be able to discuss earlier statements. This stupid game gives people a blank slate to say stupid things without being called on them.

Underrated. Massively underrated. He proved himself the greatest middleweight in the world in an era when middleweights, hundreds of them, loitered on every street corner. His body punching half-killed opponents, and his left hook finished them off. Forget the Graziano rematch, look at the rubber.
Perfection.

Re: New Game-Overrated or Underrated
At one time he was underrated, though by now he gets so much recognition as being underrated that he really isn't underrated anymore.Terry D wrote:Ezzard Charles.
Michael Spinks.
Re: New Game-Overrated or Underrated
Oh, Jesus! Spinks is so underrated, it hardly bears thinking. He wiped out the light-heavies and then lost ONE fight to a peak you know who at heavy. One loss, his entire career, yet people hardly ever discuss him or big him up. This guy sparked Marvin Johnson, stopped Yaqui (twice, I'm sure), licked a scary Braxton... He was unbelievably dominant as world light-heavyweight champ. He was the first light-heavy champ to win the world heavyweight title, of course.My2Sense wrote:At one time he was underrated, though by now he gets so much recognition as being underrated that he really isn't underrated anymore.Terry D wrote:Ezzard Charles.![]()

Re: New Game-Overrated or Underrated
Lacked power for a tall HW, but all things considered, Terrell is probably a little underrated. He had a nice 15 fight win streak going before he met Ali, and he did hold the WBA belt.

Re: New Game-Overrated or Underrated
If he's anything, I suppose he's underrated. He knocked Alan Minter out (as opposed to simply stopping him on cuts), so his power wasn't hype. Even the American media acknowledged his power was genuine, and some sources even reported that it was bigger than Hagler's (with one punch, anyway). And you could tell from the way Hagler fought him, that he was ultra-conscious about getting caught with that left hook, so even he acknowledged that Sibson was a genuine threat.Terry D wrote:Tony Sibson.
