A long time ago, based upon a source I can't recall, I entered the March 21, 1929 Hill-Jarvis bout. I recorded it as a 15-rounder for the British Flyweight Title.

Well, today I saw a CNA (contemporary newspaper account/article) saying it was a 12-rounder for the Lightweight Championship of Great Britain and of Europe.

Can anyone clarify?

Boxing news Annual 1959 which has both their records has it as a 15 rounder for the British and European Flyweight Title.

(I aim to update Jarvis record over the next few days)

Also does anyone know how Johnny Hill died, it was after his win over Jarvis on June 29th 1929 a fight he won by Disq. Any details?

Reprinted below is an e-mail I recieved from Johnny Hill's family. For privacy purposes I have delted the name and address --

================================

Dear Mike,

I am the great niece of Johnny Hill. One of the title claimants for the 1928-29 World Flyweight Champion. Below is all the information I have on him:-

He was born on 14th December 1905 at 5 Brunswick Road, Edinburgh to David Hill (my Great-grandad, his Dad) and I think his Mum was called Betty (I am not sure).He was the oldest of 3 brothers, Alfred Stewart Hill (my Grandad + the only surviving direct relative of Johnny) and David Hill (my great Uncle. He died in the early 1980's) and the family moved to Strathmiglo,
Fife, Scotland, shortly afterwards (my family still live here).

Johnny trained in a gym set up by his Dad in Back Dykes Strathmiglo, the same steet where his house was. He won the European flyweight title in March 1928. He was also recognised by the New York State Athletic Commission (+The Hugman British Boxing Yearbook) as The World Flyweight Champion after the same fight beating "Newsboy" Brown in London. However, some Americans thought that Izzy Schwhartz and Frankie Genaro had a claim to the title. So the Athletic Commission thought that the only way to solve the problem was to have the 3 boxers fight each other but unfortunately while working at his job repairing the roads in my home village of Strathmiglo Johnny contracted pneumonia and on the very day he was due to fight Frankie Genaro here in Scotland (September 27th 1929) my great uncle died aged 24. Frankie Genaro agreed to act as a pallbearer at his funeral and he is buried in Strathmiglo and Edenshead Parish Church Cemetery. He was also a T- total.
