Samil Sam 'wins' Euro title

Post by Old bones Ian »

Ok so how long does it take a boxing commision to count up a scorecard?
Apparently the EBU now take a couple of weeks, after one of their 'judges' admitted changing his card, from a 10-10 round in the last. to a 10-9 score for Vidoz.
Thus making the fight a draw, now the judge has 'suddenly' come clean and admitted his mistake.

The judge speaking from a luxery villa in Turkey said "it was a terrible error, and it wasn't until i got to my free luxery villa in Turkey, with all expenses for a week, that i suddenly remembered my mistake"

the above quote may not be entirely correct.

It is a strange one. The good news is that there will be a rematch within 90 days.
Sinan Samil Sam has been declared European heavyweight champion after being awarded a retrospective victory over Paolo Vidoz following their fight in Ankara earlier this month.

The contest had originally been declared a majority draw after two judges scored the fight even while a third had the Turk, who previously held the same title in 2003, two points ahead.

However the scoring caused controversy when it was revealed judge Robin Dolpierre had altered his original score for a drawn final round, to 10-9 in favour of Vidoz.

The European Boxing Union on Wednesday announced Dolpierre had admitted his error and confirmed his original scoring, thus granting victory to Sam. The new champion has been ordered to grant Vidoz a rematch within 90 days.

Although many neutral observers believed Vidoz had done enough to win, Sam said on Wednesday: "I knew I won the fight and I was very disappointed when the draw was announced. All that counts is that justice won in the end."

If he doesnt fight before they enforce another mandatory Im not sure he will be in their (EBU) rankings on grounds of inactivity. So I think Matt will have to get back in the ring in the coming months.

I wonder who he will fight.

What the judge was first to give Sam a 10-9 round, but before he turned over the scorecard to the ref he crossed over the 10-9 score and made it 10-10. Somehow Öner saw that and when the result was counted he was laying on the canvas with his head under the robes and was banging his fist on the table in front of the supervisor.

Oener wouldn't try anything like that. Not after the severe discliplinary action taken against him as a result of the Williams/Airich fight.

Oh, hold on...
