Is Calzaghe vacting his belt or not?

Post by jamesmcdonnell »

I seem to recall someone saying he was vacating his belt. He however still appears to be WBO champion.

Strictly speaking you don't have to vacate the belt anyway do you? I thought you only had to do that if you own the higher weight category belt.

I read somewhere Calzaghe will give up the belt when he wins the IBF belt at 175. Hardly the usual Calzaghe confidence in that decision although I am sure Warren had a say in it.

I can still see Calzaghe making two defences of his WBO title - one of his bigger ambitions is to break Eubank record. While he's quite tight at Super Middle - I think he has changed his regime to make sure he can make the weight without too much bother. If he's struggling to get good Light Heavyweight fights, then why not keep his Super Middle belt.

If he beats Johnson he will have to vacate the WBO title to keep the IBF 175 belt.
