How Good was HERBIE HIDE?
How Good was HERBIE HIDE?
I finally got a chance to see Herbie Hide's loss to Mendauga Kulikauskas on a cut and his emotional post fight interview. I've always liked Herbie but haven't been able to see his early fights.
People have mixed views about him, some say he was a real world-beater at 21 but other's say he was never any good!
What is the truth?
I Remember Riddock Bowe saying that Herbie was the Hardest puncher he ever faced and the closest one to knocking him out. Herbie was only 23 at the time and lost to argubley the best Heavyweight in the world at the time!
Also being 2 time WBO Champion is no easy thing even if it was a devalued belt.
I really hope HIDE vs A HARRISON comes off and Herbie can get back to the big stage where he belongs.
So was Herbie ever World Class and how did he compare with guys like Frank Bruno? What do u guys think?

hide is shot and as one poster on here whose opinion I respect pointed out, he is living off the back harrison's publicity, has fougth no-one of note in his comeback and the first time he does will get beat up.
He wont be fighting anyway I doubt, he is in trouble with the law for a change for various issues.

Hide has never beaten top notch competition, probably his best win was over Micheal Bentt who ofcourse was injured going into the fight. While Hide had talent with speed and power he lacked a strong mental approach and his defence and chin have always been sadly lacking.
The next halfway decent punch he takes will ko him and I think Hide knows this hence his erratic behaviour.... he knows he can't take a punch... and glass chins don't improve with age either!....

His biggest win was that fight with Bentt and that was a rematch, everyone knows he lost that outdoor publicity wrestle
As an offensive fighter he was dangerous but he seriously could not take a punch, look at the Bowe fight when he was in full control until he got floored by an inocuous jab and his eyes were at the back of the arena, he was spaced. He showed heart to keep getting up but Klitschko and then Chingangu exposed his vulnerability, fair play to him he at least made a lot cash before he got exposed but his return promised so much and delivered so little, Harrison will never fight him and he knows it, he's just trying to drum up some publicity.
What do u mean
Harrison will never fight Hide?
Why?

in FIFTEEN YEARS of professional fighting herbie hide has never beaten one top ten ranked heavyweight.
he has only ever faced TWO top ten heavyweights and was dominated and knocked out both times.
he was also knocked out by a limited journeyman!
the fact that he has held the wbo title twice really puts the title into its truly pathetic perspective. and the opponents he had to face to "win" (be gifted) the title is equally pathetic. prematurely soiled goods michael bentt (a 10 fight novice) and 40 yr old tony tucker (overweight, washed up & back on drugs yet again)
that isnt even a biased post. that is the stone cold truth on herbie hide if anyone disagrees with anything i wrote i would be interested to hear it.

I think your over doing things about how rubbish Hide is!
Sure he's got a weak chin but whilst he standing he can take any Heavyweight out with 1 punch including Audley and Williams!

nasty, read my post again. it is not harsh, it is stone cold truth.
if he can take out "any heavy" with one punch then he should have taken out bowe because he hit him square several times. obviously hide can whack when he lands a solid blow and not a slap, but he is too frail to compete with decent heavies.
his current comeback versus obscure journeymen has brought him a record of 3-2 (both losses by stoppage).
his big punch failed to do any damage whatsoever versus derek mcafferty who was whacked out in 3 rds by pele reid.

I think the Mcafferty fight was very telling... Hide made very heavy weather of it and was uncomfortable on the few occasions that he was hit. Hide has power but nothing that awesome despite what Bowe said.... what makes his punches more dangerous and what caused Bowe to be so impressed is the speed that they are thrown. Hide is still pretty fast but you've got to be able to take it to really make it even halfway to the top and Hide is quite simply unable to take a decent punch.
The most over protected "world class" fighter in the history of this country, look at his record - it makes Bruno's look superb.
He won the British title (vacant belt) from a very lactlusture Michael Murray, Murray of course a few years later got stopped early by a very young Danny Williams. He didn't win the lonsdale belt outright.
He then mysteriously got a challenge against Michael Bentt, who happend to be in the middle of fasting (not Herbie's fault). Bentt was hardly a great fighter who got lucky against Tommy Morrison.
He first defence he puts up a brave but nevertheless unsuccesful performance against Bowe. He then somehow works his way back to the top of the WBO rankings and fights a near 40 year old Tony Tucker, who had large man breasts and all the years of substance abuse caught up with him long before this fight.
A good victory, but Tucker looked dazed and shot the moment he arrived in the country. Then he finally makes a few successful defences of his title - against the world class Damon Reid (who actually was lighter than him) and someone else who even the dutch Sonny Liston would KO. Then he get anhilated by an inexeprienced Klitchko.
Since then he hasn't done much to impress me.
Don't get me wrong he's got alot of skills, but to he has ALWAYS been protected, and we think we know why.

I agree Overhand, but it is probably Herbs' best victory - which says alot about this 2 times world champion.overhand_right wrote:stujones wrote:

.
lol.
whilst i dont agree waxing a completely shot fighter is a good victory, the other comment on tucker is exactly what i recall about him in his pre fight interviews!!
great observation!
At least Danny has got a legitamate belt outright, as has Francis and for all Bruno's protection he captured the European belt and won the world title against a guy who did make one successful defence.
I just get so mad and frustrated when people go on about Hide being a 2 time ex-world heavyweight champion....... the man has never really been a credible top ten contender let alone a genuine world champ, to call him such is basically a insult to the men who gave their sweat and blood to become GENUINE world champions!!!..... Hide in reality has never risen above Europeon class.... in fact he's hardly ever even fought in top Europeon class even.....

i agree, it really peeves me when jim neilly and such refer to hide as a TWO time heavyweight champ. you think of the guys lennox lewis and frank bruno had to beat and fight at top level and this bum herbie hide is considered a 2 time champ for winning fake titles and beating soiled goods.
worse yet, jim neilly also always says "and remember, herbie even knocked out tony tucker, who went the distance with both mike tyson and lennox lewis"!!!!!!
what the frick???!!! no fuckin mention that tucker was over a decade removed from his champion days, 40, and completey out of shape and washed up.
grrrrrrrr

Bring back Harry Carpenter that's what I say, or Reg Gutteridge.... those guys knew what they were talking about and furthermore they knew when to talk :)
and when to let the action speak for itself...
. Neilly never shuts up for a moment
and most of what he says is either the bloody obvious
or totally off the mark!!!...... :x :x :x
Re: How Good was HERBIE HIDE?
I honestly believe Bowe was paid to say that to help launch Hides final comeback following the Chingangu loss. Herbie's punches were tickling Bowe not hurting him.nasty wrote:I Remember Riddick Bowe saying that Herbie was the hardest puncher he ever faced and the closest one to knocking him out
I agree with the majority here about Hide. He was never a world champion, just an exciting but terribly vulnerable pretender. Ever since the Bowe loss I've always felt a sense of tragedy with Hide, I hope he packs it in before he suffers another night of humiliation.

Bowe's comments are obviously complete bollocks. Bowe was twatted senseless by Golota twice, and was out on his feet for about a minute after holyfield decked the crap out of him, Herbie Hide damaged Bowe's fists more than his chin by repeatedly chinning them.
It is a sad fact that there is no criticism of fights or fighters in BBC coverage any more, it's become like American coverage with anodyne bullshit being peddled as solid gold every time they cover a fight.
Every single fighter is 'world class' no matter than they are only commonwealth champion, every prospect is 'the hottest in the division right now', it's like the BBC feels the need to trump every single fight as something more than it is.
Some of the commentators are far better than others, but the BBC seem to prefer Jim Neilly and Duke 'the dentists drill' McKenzie. Whilst McKenzie is good at bringing excitement to the fight, he does say some very silly things indeed, and doesn't actually seem to take much care over how ridiculous some of his comments are going to sound.
Harry and Reg called it like it was, and aside from Harry's fanatical enthusiasm for Bruno, he didn't say daft things.
We need some more serious heavyweight commentary that does more than just provide a general white noise in the background, or just telling us that we are watching some amazing fight/fighter/upset.
