Kelly Pavlik Will Return To 160 After Bernard Hopkins

Despite the fact that two of his last three fights were held above the middleweight limit of 160, Cameron Dunkin, co-manager of WBC/WBO middleweight champ Kelly Pavlik, says his fighter will move back down to defend his titles. Pavlik is going to face Bernard Hopkins on October 18 at the catch-weight of 170-pounds. Dunkin says that Pavlik has been forced to find fights at higher weights due to the fighter being unable to secure an opponent at 160. Dunkin was not exactly thrilled with the idea of Pavlik having to go to 170 to fight an opponent as crafty as Hopkins.

“Kelly has been in some unusual circumstances,” said Dunkin to The Vindicator . “I think they [the organizations] understand that. But we don’t want to [tick] them off. Hopkins is a big name guy and our big concern was the weight. It’s a lot heavier, but we have a lot of faith in Kelly that he can get it done.”

If Pavlik beats Hopkins, and Joe Calzaghe defeats Roy Jones Jr. in September, the two of them will be in line to fight. The fight won't happen as quick as people may think. Dunkin tells the paper that Pavlik will probably then make a mandatory defense of his middleweight crown, either against WBC mandatory Marco Antonio Rubio or the WBO's number-one, Sebastian Zbik, who is also ranked seventh by the WBC. After Pavlik makes another defense, he will go up to 168 to challenge Calzaghe.

“If he fights one of those guys, it’ll make everybody real happy,” Dunkin said.

Hopkins won't be as strong at 170 as he is at 172 or 174.

But I doubt Pavlik carries 170 well at this level. It could slow him down.

That said, it's workrate that beats Hopkins now. Pavlik will throw a lot of shots, as Calzaghe did. Hopkins won't do enough.

I think it's shameful that Hopkins is still allowed to fight on HBO after the dreadful, negative showings vs Calzaghe & Taylor.

I think Cal will be the winner either way.

Hop wins, no dangerous opponents lft and JC retires unbeaten.

Pavlik wins, and JC has a big name super fight to close with at 168-175.

They can say that. But once you move up, you've moved up. Boxers usually do one thing or the other. Nice one Pav, you've made all of...one title defences.

yep, HBO can't even stand Hopkins either. And now with their favoritism of GBP, they're risking one of the brightest stars to look shit.

Bob Arum - I thought he could stand up to the big networks, I thought he made sure Pavlik wasn't tied to any one network so they could keep him busy, put him on different TV, build a fairly wide fan base, and do what he wants. All they had to do was get rid of Rubio, and fight Abraham next year (won't be easy to negotiate, that).

Hopkins tired badly vs Joe, and he tired vs the smaller Winky, in that catchweight. Pavlik has to stay on top of him, wear him out.

I thought Pavlik should fight Calzaghe. Or, actually, that Calzaghe should fight Pavlik.

"Arthur effing Abraham?" He's a perfect foil for Pavlik. They could fight in a division that they're champions in. They're both massive punchers and AA just won a fight in America. Who's opinionated? Obviously, will be hard to deal with the Germans, but what's new.

Pavlik could have blasted out Rubio and found a more suitable foe than Hopkins. Even Pavlik isn't happy about fighting the spoiling, ugly, negative Hopkins. That says it all.

The middleweight champ goes up to light heavy to fight a guy who lost his title in the worst big fight of the year - something's fvcked up. Keep on quacking.

The fact is, that fights like these just aren't interesting. Nor are you, Galaxy.
