Gary Buckland

Just heard this young lightweight got beaten in a bit of an upset. Got beaten by Ben Murphy in Portsmouth last month. Is Buckland still a promising fighter?

I heard about the Welshman before. Wasn't he offered the John Murray fight last May? He's still the Celtic lightweight champ, I take it, and he's young enough to learn from his defeat, I suppose. Has decent wins over Martin Watson and Alexanders Spitko on his record. Was surprised when I was told he'd got beaten.

Anyone seen Buckland fight? Thoughts?

Buckland had a good work rate but Ben got the better exchanges (and a very tasty overhand that worked well). Considering Gary was the taller, I'd have expected him to impose himself more and use his jab, but he was backed up against the ropes at times.

Decent natural size for the weight, though. Maybe he had an off night.

Seems like only one of his fights were on TV, vs Anthony Christopher, one of his early fights.


Also, what does everyone think of Kevin Buckley and Ireland's Andrew Murray, two more young lightweights that are meant to have promise? Were any of Andrew Murray's fights televised when he fought in England?

Adam Smith covered it, but it wasn't a great fight unlike the Castle and Dyer fights they showed so SKY may have a tape of it somewhere.

Of travelling stock, trained by former good pro Tony Borg out of Newport, Buckland is solidly built at 5ft 7ins, with a thumping jab and plenty of determined aggression.
Buckland had enough 'moves' to extend Amir Khan in the amateurs (October 2000, Liverpool: Khan won 13 to 10).

His record suggests he has little pop. Same with Fewkes & Andrew Murray. But ti sounds like they're all very capable.

True. I suppose though, that all these lads can help contribute to a cracking domestic and Euro scene, make abit of money & hopefully get remembered for being in some terrific fights, at the very least.

I haven't seen Buckland, but looking at his padded record, losing to Murphy and scraping past Stuart Phillips for the Welsh suggests the domestic scene is his limit.
He is a good ticket seller though so I imagine they will keep him winning
Running Khan close as 12 year olds probably will have little bearing on his future
