Ottke Not The Only One Calling It Quits

Post by steve689 »

Well no one on the Current Scene seemed too interested (probably because the topic did not include the words Tyson or Mesi!) but i thought it was right to mention the retirement of Vinnie Pazienza:

Sven Ottke was not the only one bowing out last night as crowd pleaser Vinnie Paz (Pazienza) also called time on a ditinguished career after his 60th fight. Paz endured 10 hard rounds with Tocker Pudwill (if that is possible ) before bowing out, he had floored Pudwill twice in the fight. He leaves behind a 50-10 record and fought names like Roy Jones, Eric Lucas, Herol Graham, Roger Mayweather, Roberto Duran and Hector Camacho in a 21 year career that started at Lightweight.

How long before he's back one wonders?

Obviously Paz returning to the ring after that terrible car crash was an increadible achievement.

50-10 is a good record as he often mixed in very high class.

I wish the man a happy retirement, he has been a solid profession and retires with a very respectable record.

Paz was a warrior. I hated him for a while and enjoyed seeing him take a right pasting at the hands of Roger Mayweather in 1989, but his win over Gilbert Dele for the WBA light-middleweight title in the early 90's was astonishing and I grew to really admire him.
I also liked his quotes prior to the first Roberto Duran fight. He said he had no fear of Duran, who was fat and aging, in the build-up to the fight. But when the referee had given his final instructions and the respective corners had cleared the ring, he turned around and Duran was snarling at him. "Jesus Christ!" thought Paz. "I'm in the ring with Roberto Duran!"
He survived a heavy knockdown (which would have finished anyone else) to win on points.

He was awesome the night he destroyed Honeyghun. Remember the old Ragamuffin man was going through a bit a resergance and had captured the Commonwealth belt. It was hyped as the return to the big league (following Breland) and Paz just anhilated him.

He looked like he was going to be an all time great at that stage, unfortunately the crash took away his peak years and he did go way beyond his natural weight.

Jones was awesome, in one round Paz didn't land a punch. The KO was brilliant as well, fantastic combo.

Yeah, wasn't in this fight when Roy actually told his cornerman that he was given the Paz fans something to cheer about early on when he did absolutely nothing in the opening few rounds - then he told his corner men "I'll pick it up now".

Toying with a solid fighter.

Paz was (and still is) a real character who although not blessed with an abundance of talent, gave 100% every time he stepped into the ring. Fought some good fighters spanning a wide spectrum of weights too. To name a few: Honeyghan and Gilbert Dele (l-middle), Herol Graham (supermiddle), Greg Haugen (twice) (lightweight), Roger Mayweather (light-welter), Duran, Roy Jones and later on smacked out prospect Dana Rosenblatt big time.

A real warrior who didn't care who he fought and gave value for money.

I'll bet that Steve, as we speak, has sneaked into the back door of the mansion he had built but never lived in, tiptoed past the sleeping form of the sexy supermodel he married but never slept with into the posh TV room he had outfitted with the latest gear but never enjoyed, turned on the video machine he bought but never used, and has finally popped in the tape he bought but never watched before. The only problem is, he can't seem to find the remote he never lost. :-P

Lol, Mr Viking i said i have never watched it in depth, in other words i watched it but that was when i brought it ages ago (it's on part of a Roy Jones compilation) and was probably tending to the swans, sipping bordeaux 1893 or playing chess with Lord Rupert at the time so cannot remember a great deal about it :P If anyone wants a copy let me know and i'll do you one.
