who employs who...

Post by rhino222 »

im presuming that: ....

the fighter employs the promoter

the fighter employs the trainer

the fighter employs the cutsman

the fighter employs the seconds etc

the promoter employs the referee

the promoter employs the judges

the promoter employs the security

no wonder boxing is so confusing !!!!

The Board 'employ' the referees and judges, Rhino.

That doesn't mean the promoter doesn't have to pay for them though!

i know the board appoint them, but as the promoter pays them, does that not mean he employs them?, i presume they sign a single fight contract of employment with the promoter with associated agreed expenses and fight salary?

I would assume that the BBBC require British boxing contracts to include standard clauses that state something (amongst other things) to the effect that:

"it is at the discretion of the BBBC to appoint judges and referees for the said contest. Such persons to be appointed and named not less than 21 days before the fight..."

In that way, the individual employees/workers (e.g. the judges and referees) of the BBBC dont have to personally sign the contract with the promoter for the referees and judges are effectively provided to the promoter as agency workers. Accordingly, an agency worker's contract of employment is with his agent (e.g. the BBBC) and not the hiring company (e.g. the promoter).

It would depend on the case.

I would have thought that a low profile fighter who signed with a major promoter would have cornermen, cutsman, and associated staff 'assigned' to them, and then those people would be paid from their purse.

Someone like Khan or Hatton though, have more clout and will agree terms with the promoter.

Manager negotiates best deal for fighter via promoter, but in order to do so promoter requires guarantees(promotional contract.

Trainer is usually paid 10% of the Boxers gross purse.Once all expenses have been paid this would include the cutman the manager takes 25% and the fighter recieves the rest.So in effect the fighter and Manager contribute to paying the trainer and cutman.
Referees, judges, doctors, paramedics, house seconds and security are paid for by the promoter in much the same way that football clubs have to pay the police force to police football matches.Refs, judges, timekeepers and Doctorsare appointed by the BBB of C and get paid other officials are not paid.

Most promoters would state fighters work for them.

Technically they are correct... A fighter enters into contract to provide his services on the promoters events, (although perfomance clauses can be put on promoter).

That is why if a boxer performs outside of his contract, (i.e. on another promoters show after a purse bid), he has to compensate his actualy promoter, (normally to the tune of 25% of his purse).

Obviously there are exceptions - Audley employing Harding, Naz employing Hearn. But this is very rare...

A lot of managerial contracts also take 10% of the gross purse....

all very interesting.....and equally all very confusing.

definately seems that, the bigger name you are (and i mean as a fighter or a promoter or whatever) then the more you seem to control the puppet strings !!

...... Made worse if your Promotor and Manager are the same person.
Rhino - I think we were driving at the same thing when I started the thread who has the most clout.
Then there's the even more confusing set up, when you have more than one Manager !

Very good point twenty six...

The Board have rules in place to prevent this happening I believe, but they are never enforced.

How many fighters do Warren and Hennessy manage and promote!

There is an obvious conflict. As a promoter they should want to make the most money from their events. As a manager they should want their boxer to earn the highest purses possible....
