Williams looked very sharp indeed, on that form he'd have taken the piss out of Sprott.

Not sure what's next for him.

The man makes me want to pull my beard out in fustration. So much talent, so little mental toughness.

I really, really want to believe that the Sprott result will be a kick up the arse for Danny, but I'm afriad I don't.

Danny showed a sweet jab last night, as he did against Sprott (3) its just a question of maintaining concentration.....
You wont find many heavies around today with a better double jab than Danny...

Hopefully he will use it to bust Kandelaki up

The trouble is that Danny always does this, looks great againts some plonker from Romania, and then looks like turd when he's in against someone he should beat.

One day, one bloody day Danny is going to put it all together just when he needs to.

When he's angry there really is some power in that right hand. He just doesn't (or can't) fight angry often enough to gain momentum.

And that is something he will never be able to change. Perhaps he's just not mean enough....

Well, he kind of DID last time, and that was the problem!

In the last Sprott fight Danny showed he was by far the better boxer, without really winning the fight. Without suffering a shock KO, that's actually pretty difficult to do, but Danny managed it.

Last night Danny showed the gulf between what he delivers and what he is capable of. The Sky boys clearly believe it's just a mattter of time before Danny does deliver what he is capable of, but I think most fans doubt this now. I know I do.

He'll go down as an under-achiever. (I hope I am wrong about this, I really do).

i agree always had a soft spot for Danny gave me one the bravest moment ive ever seen in the ring against potter.
It baffles me a man capable of going through that doesnt have the devil in his work sometimes.
Perhaps it psychologically scarred him.

Yeah but there was no rage whatsoever in Danny that night, much to everyones suprise he went on the back foot from the off looking to outbox Sprott rather than beat him up.

I sometimes get the feeling if Danny trained hard for a few weeks and then was suddenly told he had a big fight the next day he'd perform much better on the night. It's like all the build up takes the edge off him.

We all know Williams has talent, but he's a mental midget, and it's always gonna stop him from getting anywhere.

I say get Danny in with Herbie Hide... make or break. I firmly believe Danny can triumph in a thriller, but will need to find that mean streak others have mentioned is often missing in his work. Herbie won't have any problems putting Danny's lights-out if the chance comes his way and maybe , just maybe, this type of pressurised situation will force Danny to be the boxer some of us feel Danny can be.

Firstly, the oppnent was a poor so no more than an early KO would suffice.

I have to say though, he performed well showed great power (one punch KO) looked fast. I was particularly impressed with his footwork and his ability to make the opponent miss.

What was his official weight, it look light.

Lets hope he was light because he was thinking about his fight with Hide.

I agree with Darke and Barry, he needs to forget about the British title and try and get a big fight as "damaged goods". Why couldn't he fight McCline instead of Llewellyn.

When you compare on yesterdays showing and view most of his generations world stars (try Ruiz vs Rahman) it makes it all the more confusing why he's not in the worlds top ten. Still think he'll beat Harrison.

to use the fight as a yardstick he beat a guy in the first round that audley could only beat on points and that skelton took 3 rounds against so in that respect for danny the fight should be encouraging.

but until he pushed against hide, harrison or even another against skelton (or why not samil sam again?) there will always be a question mark against the mental capacity of the man no matter how well he does.

i like danny and being a psychiatric nurse, i just wish he'd get someone to help him with his appraoch psychologically.

I know it's going a bit off this thread's track but I'd be interested to hear what sort of techniques you would normally use to increase someone's mental toughness?

I don't think anything can be done to make Williams mental toughness better. If its not done at this stage of his game it will never be done.

You either have the  in you or you don't. Its that simple, fighters are born and breed and that certain toughness has to come from within.

Danny is mentally tough know doubt, the Potter fight and the fact he kept getting up against Sam. When the going gets tough, Danny doesn't get going.

From what I have seen (although I'd need to talk to Danny) is that he has a tendancy to freeze or chalk under pressure. Its the big fights where he has seemed to have frozen. Francis 1, Samil Sam and Sprott 3 (which was big, because it was the first fight back under Sports Network). Now, there plenty of "Psychological Skills" that Danny can do to help this situation.

1) Do Imagery sessions, visualise his performance, visualise success, visualise different situations and how to go about them.

2) Physical training - nothing is better for your confidence than the fact you believe you are in the best shape. Danny's opinion about his optimal weight differs all the time - if he doesn't know, then who does. This must effect his confidence and confidence effects every aspect of your performance.

3) Again discuss with people when you felt at your optimum best and try to repeat the mental and physical preparation.

4) Keywords - all of the above can help, but when being pounded on it can go through the window. Danny should pick keywords that he must think to help him focus on his pre-fight plan and must pick certain times to remind him of the keywords. For example if the keyword is flow, perhaps when the ref says break or when the words "seconds out... Round" is said, Danny can think "ohh yeah, Flow". Obviously, he's to focus on the fight so they can't be too complicated words - cause he could end up getting KO'd thinking "what was the word again".

there are many different different appraoches which could be used some of which have been outlined above.

there is another appraoch which could be used in a sporting context and is just as applicable in just about any other situation or fear encoutered in real life. its a cognitive behavioural approach and centres around identifying a certain point in an individuals behaviour which stops them from progressing to the next level and ealing with the issue at that point and understanding why the inability to over come the hurdle influences your behaviour.

its similar in a way to a graded exposure. although obviously a graded exposure plan is next to impossible to acheive in a boxing context.

however sitting down and identifying the barriers as to what actually would stop a boxer from being "mentally attuned" should be a relativly straight forward process. the fact of the matter is that there must be something influincing the mentality of a fighter and when that something is identified it can be worked upon. however the main point to bear in mind is that with all psychological adaptive behavioural approaches, the individual concerned must accept there is a problem and be willing to change it. im not sure that danny accepts that a roblem actually exists!!

this might sound a bit bollocks and long winded in the description above but it is very straight forward and a lot easier to explain face to face!! plus ive just finished a 14 1/2 hour shift and my ability to explain concepts is somewhat impaired due to the fact im fucked

He's more confident now than he's ever been, question is...can he sustain this? if you put him in with Sam again would he crumble. I think that should be the next move btw, Sam rematch, That will test him mentally. Sam is coming off a couple of defeats, wont be so confident himself.
