He handled Marga comfortably yet Marga STILL gets more ratings than him. Look at how the HBO crew were disrespecting him

How does that work exactly?

Also, Soto got disqaulified for less than that shot that Marga threw on Cotto after he took his first knee
I had Margo beating Williams. Williams threw loads of slaps and got worn down by Margo in the 2nd half.

If they fight again, leave it a year, Williams will be dead at the weight and Margo will grind him up properly.

Anyway, who cares if Margo lost a fight? He comes back like nothing has happened and gets a way bigger scalp than Williams: Cotto. Got to admire Tony, he's been overlooked for big fights, taken on a lot of assignments that big names would avoid (southpaws Williams, Santos twice) & taken on a number of young guns (Kyvelos, Cintron, Clottey, Sergio Martinez) & hardened ex champs (Antonio Diaz, Andrew Lewis). He's proven he belongs with the very elite and has earned a spot in the top 10 p4p.

Despite all that, though, Margarito just wouldn't be denied. His chin is ridiculous. Also, when you see a guy actually jogging towards you it must be so soul-destroying. Margarito didn't take a step back all night and just eventually forced Cotto to fight his fight. Was I the only one who had Cotto winning going into the 11th? Even in the really tough, close rounds, I thought Cotto did the cleaner work. I gave Margarito the 2nd, 7th and 10th but that was it. Pivotally, even in the rounds Margarito did lose he made Cotto work for every last point. That's what eventually won the Mexican the fight.
I had it even at about round 6 and they seemed to be trading rds after that, to me.

Cotto boxed with class and I thought he was ready to really humiliate Margo after 6, but in the 7th Tony hurt him and just kep denying him the space.

I don't even like Margo's style of boxing, but I somehow feel very pleased for him.

Skill versus will, and will prevailed. I felt before the fight we might see an upset and we certainly did. Cotto gave some dazzling combinations and looked very good earlier on. Later Cotto had a big problem breathing through all that blood and I think that slowed him down. Full credit to Tony for his persistant attacks and determination to win. Cotto looked a beaten man at the end and his corner did the right thing by pulling him out. Tony would have decked him had the fight gone on. All in all the fight lived up to expectations and was exciting throughout but very few could forseen the result with Cottos corner retiring their man. I thought Tony might edge it on points but I didnt expect that to happen. Another great classic to join the many great fights in boxing history.

Thank god Steve Bunce isn't a boxing manager, the guy was calling for an immediate rematch!

I thought Cotto was dominating the first half of the fight, but he just couldn't budge Margarito, and he was gradually walked down.

One thing I think we have to factor in however, was the damage to the nose and mouth in the 5th. I think there was a clash of heads which smashed Cotto's nose, and he looked distressed by it.

Cotto had difficulty breathing from there on in, and this maybe, just maybe was enough to swing the fight.

Remember Vasquez and Marquez, everyone thought Vasquez was making an excuse the first fight, but he went on to prove it wasn't.

Cotto may not want any part of a rematch, and he is always going to struggle against Margarito if he cannot hurt him, although he did seem to briefly stiffen his legs at the end of the second round.

Great night for boxing and the welterweights. Margarito v Williams should rematch now, and Cotto needs some time out and an easy fight for the comeback.

Can't use enough superlatives for Tony Margarito...happy for him.

This makes Paul Williams look good. Mayweather avoided all of them which doesn't make me happy per se, but then again, I believe he would have beaten them all.
Yep, I think the nose was broken, and the blood that constantly poured into the mouth may have had a major impact on the fight.

Also, however, Margarito had Cotto cornered throughout the 2nd and battered him a bit, way before head clashes. Seemed whenever Margo unloaded a sustained attack, that Cotto would mark up a bit. When Cotto got tired, he was always going to get more of that late on. I think Cotto's inability to fight full rounds and the way he can mark up, is what gave Tony his window to the victory.

I wonder what's next for Margarito. Berto will be kept away from him. Only fights I can see beckoning are high risk rematches with Williams and Clottey. I think Margarito deserves some kind of cash in fight, though he won't get a DLH fight, and I doubt he gets a Cotto rematch.

Great fight, easily the best I've seen this year.I thought Cotto got his tactics spot-on for the first half of the fight but as the fight wore on he just couldn't keep up the movement to avoid the big shots from Margarito and he eventually just got wore down. What amazing stamina and chin Margarito has, he just wouldn't be denied.

I only gave Margarito two rounds because Cotto was so accurate as a counter puncher - did anyone else have that?

I only gave Margo rounds two and seven but two of the judges have had in 96-94 up after round ten. I don't know why in America judges go off aggression. Cotto was bossing Margo and making him miss whilst Cotto caught Tony will massive shots all night. Strange.

Yep I only gave Margo 2-4 rounds before the 11th because Cotto was so much more accurate BUT I wonder if I was incorrect in not scoring higher for Margos workrate which in the end put a toll on Cotto and finnished him.

I'm also undecided if it was a long break down, or if Margo just finnished off a hurt Cotto that was hurt later on or if Cotto just couldnt handle the frantic high pace.

Was anyone else shocked that Cotto got stopped? He wasnt knocked the out more overwhelmed and for some reason after the first knock down he backed up with his hands down leaning forward, he broke all the rules in that moment. Then the towell is thrown in but for me I expected Cotto to finnish (not critisising him as I wasnt the 1 getting punched in the head)

Come on, Margarito won a handful of rounds. He kept on punching. The body shots and the left uppercuts worked, and wore Cotto down.

Cotto did classy work, but some rds he did not do enough. Margarito's work isn't pretty, but give him a bit more credit.

I gave Cotto all the first 5, maybe the first 6, after the 1st I was thinking Cotto was going to treat Margo like Mayweather treated Gatti. Cotto was just so much cleaner, his defense was working a treat and who can forget the 5th when he slipped 5 margo combo shots at the end of the round, doing his best Whitaker impression

I forget when Margo came on and I forget the first time Cotto went on queer street but Margo was running the fight after Cotto went on queer street the first time (7th,8th,9th???). Cotto still kept doing the same things but not as enthusiastically

What a fight!! It lived upto the billing.

Margaritos toughness and chin amazes me everytime he fights, even Cotto couldn't put a dent in him or make him take a beckward step. Cotto's poetry in motion his skill levels are up there with the best the sports seen IMO, but Margaritos relentlessness and toughness finally overcame the skill deficit. He took him into deep water and drowned him.

This reminded me more of Wilfredo Gomez v Lupe Pintor & other great fights in smaller divisions.

Yep Gomez v Pintor is a classic on a similar level to the fight last night, although if anything, it was even more punishing and brutal..

Whatever the comparison used, Margarito v Cotto is a classic in it's own right.

Last night re-affimed my faith in the sport of professional boxing. It is easy to become jaded and turned off by all the bullshit, business and back stabbing that goes on. Nights like last night make putting up with all that worth it. :TU:

He should definitely stay away from Margarito for a few more fights - I can't see another result apart from Tony breaking down Cotto again. I don't know where he goes from here actually - he could go after Cintron in an eliminator of some sort, but I can't see that happening because Kermit can bang. I guess there's another opportunity if Forbes v Berto goes ahead - it would free up Collazo and he would probably be the best way back. He could still give a lot to the welterweight division if he has a rest and then comes back sensibly. But for me, he's got to stay away from a rematch - it would hurt him badly to lose again.
