Floyd's stamina is as good as any in the sport.
About this fight, I had Cotto winning 96-94 at the time of the stoppage. He was moving well and hitting with high accuracy. Cotto's main problem is his defense of the uppercut and body shots. Margarito broke him down to the body, had him slightly doubled over and finished him off with punnishing uppercuts.
If the nose injury was significant then it's not that hard to see Cotto boxing his way to victory in a rematch. If it wasn't, then Cotto is never going to be #1 again while Margarito is around. He'd have to be fitter than he was last night, and I don't see how that's possible. What a monstrous lump Margarito is.

Yep I only gave Margo 2-4 rounds before the 11th because Cotto was so much more accurate BUT I wonder if I was incorrect in not scoring higher for Margos workrate which in the end put a toll on Cotto and finnished him.
I'm also undecided if it was a long break down, or if Margo just finnished off a hurt Cotto that was hurt later on or if Cotto just couldnt handle the frantic high pace.
Was anyone else shocked that Cotto got stopped? He wasnt knocked the out more overwhelmed and for some reason after the first knock down he backed up with his hands down leaning forward, he broke all the rules in that moment. Then the towell is thrown in but for me I expected Cotto to finnish (not critisising him as I wasnt the 1 getting punched in the head)
Cotto didnt want to go on, we saw it, and in particular his corner did. He was going to get KOd or seriously hurt, so yes it was the right decision by the corner, therefore I wasnt shocked at all. The man could hardly breath from the blood so stamina wasnt the issue, I think his nose was broken.

I'd still pick Cotto over Mayweather though.
It's very very hard to see Cotto just having a rematch and simply outboxing Margarito. Margo gave him nose bleeds in rds 2 and 5, before the heads came together. The nose damage was there before any heads came together and it was from Marg's left uppercuts.
Well he certainly looked to be having breathing difficulty at times in the second half.
I watched Cotto walking away from the ring and saw a fighter who felt it just wasn't his night. If Cotto comes out and genuinely wants an immediate rematch then off the back of that I'd be tempted to believe he could turn the tables.
Haven't seen any of the footage since the actual fight - I could barely keep my eyes open...wasn't the initial blow to the nose a clash of heads? The injury was a major factor.
Both men fought well. God, if you don't love Margo after that then there's no helping you - he showed heart, courage, skill and heart again. He smirked at Cotto's flush-landing shots - that's funking mental. He's the unified champion in all but name.

NO he isn't, at least not undisputed, he lost to Williams only 12months ago and there was nothing controversal about that Williams swept all the early rounds, I scored it 9-3 at the time, if you scored everything Margaritos way you could have it 7-5 Williams, don't know what Buncey was on about saying it could have gone either way

Honestly, he looked tired in the 4th vs Alfonso Gomez.
Please tell me you're joking. That was nothing more than a sparring session for Cotto, who barely broke a sweat throughout.
He unloaded everything on Gomez. He was in easy control. But because he's thrown a lot of punches, he looked tired. The commentators were saying he was having mercy on Gomez, but Cotto looked genuinely out of breath. I've seen James Toney like this in routine fights as well. They are weight drainers and they don't have great stamina.

9-3 is excessive as I see it because Williams was properly flailing & Margarito would eventually corner him and hit him to the body. I had Margarito just nicking it because of his late fight control. A draw would have been fair. Anyway, it goes down as a loss, but who cares when he can bounce back like he did by dethroning TWO world title holders Cintron & Cotto, in the same year. His competition level has been very tough - Clottey not long before the Williams fight - in the past two years & I'm chuffed for the man, to come through like this.
Margarito has a chin like Marvin Hagler, you're just going to have to outbox the guy to beat him, because no way are you knocking him out.
Thought Cotto looked in trouble as soon as all that blood appeared so early ( broken nose? ) because keeping a monster like Marg at bay for 10 rounds, when he's on you for every second, and you're having trouble breathing, is going to be a full on nightmare.
Great fight, Marg looked so much bigger I'm not sure Cotto is going to want a rematch.
I always felt Margarito is much more effective than he looks.
I doubt a Williams rematch ever happens. HBO have reserved a Jan date for Williams-Wright. Williams will move up to middleweight. There's no way he's going to get back down to welter. Scratch that one.
Margarito's manager is interested in 1) Judah - if Judah wins the IBF title vs Clottey. Not sure if Judah has it in him. 2) Mosley - if Mosley beats Mayorga in September. Safe to say he will. Mosey is interested. 3) Cotto rematch. Not in Cotto's best interests. 4) de la Hoya, who will see that the risk/reward ratio is not what he wants.
Looks like Margo must wait for Mosley, IMO. But if Judah wins next week, I won't be surprised if Mar fights him late this year.
I don't blame them for wanting the big names, and the big money. I hope Margarito hangs onto that title, gets the recognition & make some great title defences.
However, I do worry about the shots he took flush from Cintron and Cotto. He can't keep on doing that, surely?

This reminded me more of Wilfredo Gomez v Lupe Pintor & other great fights in smaller divisions.
Yep Gomez v Pintor is a classic on a similar level to the fight last night, although if anything, it was even more punishing and brutal..
Whatever the comparison used, Margarito v Cotto is a classic in it's own right.
Last night re-affimed my faith in the sport of professional boxing. It is easy to become jaded and turned off by all the bullshit, business and back stabbing that goes on. Nights like last night make putting up with all that worth it.
Definitely. You seldom see 2 welterweights putting that much into a fight. These guys put everything on the line. You don't see that kind of committment and heart, when most stars are usually looking to coast so that they have something left for the next PPV event.
Was there any reports on Cotto's condition afterwards?
He seemed to hurt his hand in the fifth, as he was shaking it at the end, and was making loud noises through his nose and shook his head when going to the corner in the ninth when trying to breathe through it.
I was thinking the Gomez/Pintor epic as well, similar in that is was the Puerto Rican stylist against the Mexican slugger - didn't quite hit those heights though, and Gomez the great battled through the type of agony that finally put paid to Cotto - he might have paid for it in later years though, and was never the same again.
Hopefully Cotto comes back to fight another day, good to see his corner save him there. Did notice him shaking his right hand early on..
