Impressed with Mitchell.

Post by stujones »

I generally agree with Nicky Piper's assessment of Sharmba Mitchell. He was in there with a opponent who was out of his depth - but not leagues below world class as Darke especially suggested. I have watched Stewart a fair bit and have had a few e-mails about him for Terron Millets' manager. Stewart is an under-rated fighter. Whilst I think he's not in the top ten he's certainly a top 20 fighter, if not top 15.

Mitchell made Stewart look leagues below because it was a damn fine performance. I was quite impressed with his power and it does seem like sometimes he choses to go longer than it should and definately can be negative at times. However, he looked 100% better than the fighter who struggled with N'dou.

However, Stewart did fight the wrong style for Mitchell, you can't let him fight at his own pace. Stewart usually agressive and perhaps he froze a little mentally, I don't think Hatton will.

Its such a tough fight to call, and I only hope its happens.

Hatton vs Mitchell?, Calzaghe vs Johnson? - what a bill!!!!!

But I think we'll have to pay for it.

Hatton/Mitchell is a very tough fight to call indeed. Hatton may struggle with Mitchell's movement- but how will Mitchell fare against Hatton's relentless pressure? The edge goes to Mitchell because he's been there before. Don't know if he can keep Hatton away for the whole fight though.

Yep, pretty much agree with Riddicks comments on this one. What will win the fight? Hattons pressure or Mitchells tricky movement? It is indeed a hard one to call.

Will the younger, busier hungrier Hatton trap Mitchell on the ropes one to many times wear down and eventually overwhelm Mitchell?

Or will the Americain use his tricky movement and much greater experience to outslick, outmove, out think and confuse Hatton and not even allow the Manchester fighter to get close enough long enough to do any real damage?

I lean slightly towards Hatton but onlu just (51/49).

Mitchell can't run all night as he showed against Tzyu if he feels like he is getting caught to much he will fake shitty injuries but he is a good fighter with excellent hand speed.

I would feel confident putting Hatton in with Mitchell this summer. I don't think he should be held back and he should be let off

Mitchell seems to have plenty of Skill left, but I don't think hes the force he thinks he is, saying hes number one.

Mitchell seems to fight at his own pace and I think Hatton would set a pace he would be unhappy with and it would create openings for Hatton to tee off on.

Hatton would need to be careful for fast counters as Mitchell has quick hands.

For me its pointing towards Hatton, his age, hunger and he has the style to beat Mitchell whos best days are behind him. It should be made and soon. This fight would create a mass interest in boxing. We will wait and see

I wasn't overly-impressed with the American. He was great in spurts, but then mediocre. Worse, he was hittable and seemed to dislike body shots. He should have taken out Stewart when he had the chance. He still romped home - but Hatton would never have allowed Stewart to survive.
Bring him on.

Who isn't?

Sharmba could look at many of Hatton's fights and say that.

Hatton would beat the Mitchell that turned up last night i think, as previously suggested he looked ok at times but fought in spurts and got tagged to both head and body and wanted to cover up, he easily tamed Stewart on the inside when he boored in and gained some respite. Hatton is not as limited and more intense he would not give Mitchell the time to recover in between attacks. Stewart was game but one paced, however the Mitchell that fought Tackie would be a different proposition and would give Hatton troubles. But Mitchell seems to me like a guy who needs more breaks and doesn't want to for 3 minutes of 12 rounds and against an intense body puncher and come forward accurate fighter that could be suicide.

Glenn McCrory has a history of talking crap, i refrain from listening to him. His scoring is inept as well, i was watching a rerun of DLH-Trinidad the other day and he was giving Trinidad rounds he wasn't winning from what i could see, although come to think of it so were the judges :D

I thought Sharmba looked hot in patches, but to me he didn't seem totally focused. His corner could be heard shouting encouragement on a regular basis, and Sharmba visually stepped it up when this happened.

I fancy Hatton to take Mitchell apart. Mitchell is fine when he is on top, but I reckon when the chips are down, he wilts. Hatton has the tools to beat Mitchell quite comfortably imo.

And for No Joke Stewart - well done Manchester.

I thought Darke was a bit Harsh on Stewart, okay his ranking of 3 is definately lofty - but they seemed to imply he was top 30 at best. I would say his 13th ranking (one of the organisations) is not that far off the mark, probably a little lower - but inside the top 20.

He is the NABF champion after all, thats better than these Intercontinental belts IMO.

Yeah, it's not an easy win for Hatton by any means. I still think Mitchell is nearing the end of his career, and every performance from now on in he may well look worse in. Hatton could take him this summer while he's still highly regarded, as if Warren holds back until Mitchell is obviously done Hatton will just recieve more criticism. I think the timing's right for a Mitchell fight this summer, unlike a Cotto fight, someone who I think would shut out Hatton for a wide UD.

Mitchell has got all the moves but he appears to lack natural strength. Until saturday I always thought he'd be too much for Hatton but now I'm not sure.

Mitchell looked very strong to me, he was huge and looked like a muscular light middleweight in there.

Hatton wouldn't give him as much time, but Mitchell would definetly have success as he came in.

A 50-50 fight in my opinion.

I did notice though, that Mitchell held on pretty grimly on a couple of occasions when he took a hard dig to the body, which bodes well for Hatton.

Oh sure Mitchell looks the part but time and again a totally outclassed opponent finishes on his feet. Hatton would have stopped Stewart IMO.

But Sharmba has the handspeed and so much experience, it definitely would be a 50/50 fight with Hatton.

Mitchell's opponent was at least a genuine light welterweight, and took a shot pretty well, he was game and tough but limited.

Sharmba probably could have finished him off, but it's obviously his nature to coast to victory if he can, he doesn't take undue risks.

He looked to have the punchpower to force Hatton to respect him too, there's a difference between having punchpower and using it, and I think Mitchell has it when he needs it.

He didn't seem to have it against N'Dou (or enough of it anyway) by all accounts, although I missed the fight so can't really comment too much.

Mitchell looks great when he's allowed to box his own fight but all his inside the distance defeats have come when the opponents have taken him out of his comfort zone and he's crumbled under severe pressure.

While a hard night's work for Hatton, I don't think it's a hugely dangerous one. Stewart was not quick enough of foot to get near Mitchell and throw combinations, Hatton on the other hand is very adept at cutting the ring down and is nippy on his feet.

I see Hatton losing a few early rounds but gradually grinding Mitchell down for a points win or even a late stoppage.
I also don't think Mitchell's legs are what they used to be. He's still a class operator though. A solid professional.

totally agree Bennie his legs seemed to go in the latter part of the fight also Stewart hurt him acouple of times and it has to be said that he (Stewart) had the heart of a lion to survive that fight. Shame he didnt apply a little more pressure at times and let Mitchell pick him off from a distance. Havent seen the video yet so this is just my take from my seat.
Felt stewart needed to get inside and rough him up a bit more which when he did manage to do, he had success, it just didnt happen for long nor often enough.
Mitchell started off very impressively using slick movement and great handspeed but that seemed to fade a little later, could be age. I think Ricky has the tools to beat him. Bring on June the 5th ill be back to the MEN if they sort that bill out for sure.

Good matchmaking by SN
to hopefully set up a Mitchell v Hatton summer showdown

just hope Mitchell don't turn into Junior Witter 2 fighting on Hatton undercard being promised the "biggie!"

Good matchmaking why?
1 Putting in an ageing but still respected Mitchell in against nothing more than an honest clubfighter. Sorry, big respect for Stewart but it was a Joke..(Pardon pun)
If Mitchell pretends to be Kostya's main rival he should be taking care of business in this type of marking time fight.
It was the equivalent of Hatton fighting Steven Smith again...again no disrespect but we are talking about world top fighters here.

2. Hatton versus Pederson..Now Pederson (as did Stewart) came to fight, and although he showed some nice moves in places, was so far outgunned in terms of firepower and strength it was untrue...To match a blown up lightweight/super-feather who has hardly fought in 3 years versus a hungry pissed off Hatton was a no-win situation for SN..I hope Perderon got a good drink out of it.

All in all ,good results for SN, but if Mitchell don't get Hatton straight up...like his management seemed to want (post fight bytes) then I would think "Adios SN"...unless team Mitchell agree with me,, their man is on the slide...time to get as many easy pay-days as poss...

As for Hatton,, accept nothing less than Sharmba Mitchell (Weis won't suffice I'm afraid)...I am sure SN will try to make the fight...if it doesn't happen then..time to re-evaluate.

Mitchell looked made for Hatton IMO.
The few body shots that landed had him looking very uncomfortable.

Hatton will be crashing home body shots all night, and I think he'll sicken and wear Mitchell down late.
He'll have to watch out for Mitchell's fast left counters though. But even when he lands, the Amercian doesn't really seem to have the "killer instinct" does he?

I'm sure Cautious Frank would rather make Hatton v Stewart this summer, but he can't get away with that now ( I hope! ).

But if it's Mitchell, Frank will have to deal with the IBF ( same with the Calzaghe fight too ) and forsake his beloved WBO..........will it happen?
