John Fewkes has been offered the Khan fight
Re: John Fewkes has been offered the Khan fight
Can't blame Fewkes for turning down a small amount like that. Fewkes and Maloney will have their own ideas about where Fewkes' career is going. He is a talented fighter who will get better and better. Fewkes can win the English belt vs Gethin and then surely gun for British champ Murray after a few defences.

At least Fewkes is a genuine lightweight even if he has no power. You never know but still se a TKO for AK. Would still like to see him in with Jono......

Many 'non-punchers' hit deceptively hard. It's usually a case of choosing not to put power into shots rather than not being able to.Autobarn wrote:Will Fewkes take the fight?
Has Khan already sparred Fewkes?
Pernell Whittaker was hardly known as a devastating puncher, nor was Michael Nunn, but both of them scored 1st round stunning KO's when they planted their feet, and hit hard enough to discourage their opponents.

I don't believe any boxer 'chooses' not to land hard punches.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Many 'non-punchers' hit deceptively hard. It's usually a case of choosing not to put power into shots rather than not being able to.Autobarn wrote:Will Fewkes take the fight?

Besides, everything seems to cloak and dagger with Khan. I'll bet his sparring partners have to sign confidentiality agreements!
you dont hear too many stories of spars & training, because what happens in the gym stays in the gym
boxers and trainers dont tell tales on their fellow pro's out of respect, and you defo wont catch them writing on boxrec

To his credit Fewkes hits the body hard. Hurt a number of fighters to the body. But how many KOS has he got? I can't remember if it was 2 or 0!jamesmcdonnell wrote:Many 'non-punchers' hit deceptively hard. I think Fewkes can get by on talent and speed...for a while.

Re: John Fewkes has been offered the Khan fight
I heard a smaller lad guy called Stephen Bead (?) dropped him in sparring, buzzed him badly and pushed him over.
Maybe its codswallop, but you never know.
With regards Fewkes, i expect Maloney to turn them down due to A) crap money and B) 'options'

It wasn't a money decision according to Maloney, he would rather Fewkes fights for the English title fight against Gethin, then a British title fight with Murray.

I've done a lot of doorwork and the stories people tell me are laughable when they are drunk, i've even had a few people who have told me about beating me up!!sweetscience wrote:exactly, thats my point
Re: John Fewkes has been offered the Khan fight
A lot of people think Murray could beat Khan and nobody had a problem when he was scheduled to fight Fewkes, so I those same people shouldn't be disappointed if he's Khan's next opponent. Now obviously there are a few others who think Khan is just better than guy's like Murray and Fewkes and should be taking on a tougher opponent if he's gonna be shooting for a world title in the near future.
Personally I'm in the middle of those two sides. I think Khan beats Murray and Fewkes every day of the week, but I also think he could get found out if he steps up to contender level at this stage. I think he's a top 15/20 guy at the moment, but if he starts looking for top ten opponants he's gonna be pushing things, because his defense needs quite a bit of work, especially with that fragile chin.
Khan should be looking at someone like Kid Diamond imo. A tough guy just outside the top ten who will probably cause Khan some problems, but who also has some weaknesses Khan can exploit. If Khan is not looking at someone like that, he's not gonna be ready for a world title anytime soon, but that's probably what FW wants. His vision for Khan and Khan's own vision are clearly different.

Re: John Fewkes has been offered the Khan fight
I would be pleased to see Khan take on Murray or Fewkes. Both are very talented, natural lightweights.
There is however becoming a big pattern: Khan is being kept away from ppl who can hit him with something very hard. Hence, discussions with Meager & offer to Fewkes, but silent on Murray, avoided Romanov and uncooperative even with Thaxton.

Re: John Fewkes has been offered the Khan fight
Ive a feeling in six months Feewkes will be putting people on there arse. :)
Re: John Fewkes has been offered the Khan fight
And there you go.
Said if Khan was fighting Meager instead Gomez there would have been criticisms..... I got an opinion from a few that it wouldn't have been the case... people would have applauded. Now Khan is POSSIBLY fighting someone fresher and better than Meager... criticism.
Murray vs Fewkes.. applauded - Khan vs Fewkes criticised.

Re: John Fewkes has been offered the Khan fight
There you go. Lowball offer kills off good fight. Were there options as well, not to mention it has to be on a Warren show. Most likely a rematch clause should Fewkey win - why bother with these ppl?
How much could Fewkes make if he held the British title, and THEN fought Khan?
The power disdvantage makes him an obvious choice. But he's fought - and won well - at light welter. So it's a shame to see this not happen.
