RIP MATE PARLOV

Post by Brute »

I see that Olympic Gold Medalist and former WBC World Light Heavyweight Champ Mate Parlov died yesterday (July 30 2008). Parlov has a connection with Australian boxing in that he outpointed Tony Mundine in 1979 in an elimination bout for a WBC Cruiserweight title shot. It was Tony's last attempt at a World title. Parlov lost the fight for the vacant title to Marvin Camel.

Back in the 1970s any time an Australian fighter fought a leading fighter that fighter was considered as having a connection to Australian boxing. As Tony Mundine held Commonwealth titles in two divisions when there were only two World organisations, he was a major player at that time.
