I reckoned the British Boxing Forum was likely to be the best one for this query - even though Tiedt was Irish and the query specifically relates to his amateur career.
Those who remember Dublin's Fred Tiedt will know that - apart from being the father of referee Emile Tiedt - he was a top amateur who should have won the gold medal at Melbopurne OIlympics in 1956. At the same time Belfast's Freddie Gilroy was also at the top of the amateur ratings but in a lower weight division.
A friend claims that he remembers Tiedt boxing Gilroy in the amateurs - but I reckon that couldn't have been the case becuase of the weight disparity (Though I did read in a book recently that Gilroy had a bit of a "Hatton" problem with his weight and walked around several stones heavier than his fighting weight). In response to my "It can't have been Gilroy..." my mate's response is "Well then it was some other top amateur from Northern Ireland at the time...".... but I simply can't think of anyone from N. Ireland who fouight at the same level as Tiedt in those days.
