UNDER 19
Re: UNDER 19
I don't know many of the entries listed so there will be a few surprises. I can tell you about a few front runners:
106 - Louie Byrd - he was exciting to watch at the NGG in Grand Rapids. He has a lot of talent. I can't imagine him not winning this unless he is struggling to make weight, gets sick or gets injured. Cervantes is also very good as is Huitt-Johnson, but I'll stick with Byrd.
112 - Determan or Lopez as they both looked good in their bout at the NGG and it was close.
119 - I have no idea as I don't know any of the boxers listed.
125 - Ronny Rios is very slick. Raeese Aleem is a strong 125# boxer from West MI. Where is Keenan Smith from Philly? He won the NGG and was very talented and was only 17. I would like to see a final between Rios and Aleem.
Where is Frankie Gomez? He should have been in this tourney too. He would have been a front runner for 119 or 125.
132 - Robert Easter and Joel Flores are both very talented. Flores is better than he showed at the NGG so I hope he shows his full potential in the U-19. I don't know many of the other boxers so there may be some that are very talented too.
141 - Too bad Zeddie Adams is too young for this tourney. He is dynamite. The kid was extremely talented when I saw him the first time about 4 years ago. Now he has won 2 N.J.O.'s in a row. Watch out for him next year in the open class. Emanuel Taylor is a favorite here. Morris Young is a strong boxer who could do well. Gary Russell III is the younger but bigger brother of our Olympian. He is talented and could do well.
152 - Eddie Alecea is conspicuous by his absence. A strong, talented 17 year-old like him should be in this tourney. Jose Bernal is very strong and lost a close bout to the NGG champ. Will Hight is a boxer with very good hand and foot speed. Errol Spence is another boxer who will compete hard for the title. Arturo Crespin is a strong, take no prisoners type who keeps coming forward from his southpaw stance. He battled hard against Bernal in the NGG. If they have a rematch, it is one that you wouldn't want to miss.
165 - Luis Arias or Dominic Wade. I think Arias would win a close decision.
178 - I don't know the boxers who are entered.
201 - Joey Dawejko will battle tough. Nick Kisner is a stick and move and move some more type of boxer. They have probably met in the ring before since they are from the same USA Boxing Region. I've heard some good things about the young "Rock" so this will let us know if he is for real. He only has about a year of experience so it is possible that he will be in over his head.
201+ - Probably Montoya. I don't think Montoya or Page really belong at 201+, but they have an easier field by skipping past 201.

Re: UNDER 19
At 132; Josh Davis is an old friend and is pretty skilled and good; he was a decent JO at 138 I think so I'll be interested to see how he does at the lower weight.

Actually, beleive it or not joey and nick has never competed before?! i am real good friends wiith joey and his grandfather, and i asked them if they have ever fought. this will be a real good weigh class, but unfortunatly there is going to be some changes with this weight class. this is joeys last amatuer tournament before turning pro, so he is going in for the kill, but like i said there will be a surprise with this weight class, and im not saying it, everyone knows that i like joey, but i will give nick kisner the win at this weight!! u guys will see!!!!

Re: UNDER 19
Is there a female division?
Re: UNDER 19
125 - yes, I forgot about Robert Rodriguez. Yes, he is good and another one with a decent chance at the gold.
132 - I skipped Chazz McDowell. A good boxer with a legit shot at gold.
165 - Browne? 20 bouts? I doubt that he will be able to deal with Arias or Wade, but we'll see. Every once in awhile a guy with 10-30 bouts sneaks up on the guys with more experience. I just don't see it happening here.

Re: UNDER 19
Marcus Browne looked very well schooled at the '08 New York GG, but fought as a novice, but definitely didn't fight like one. Might be the next big amateur boxer coming out of NY, and it will be interesting to see how he does in his first national event especially if he is meets up against Wade or Arias (or both) in this tournament.
Re: UNDER 19
Pretty sure there isn't. You can look at the USAB web site and check for sure.Is there a female division?
Re: UNDER 19
165- watch out for jullian williams, he is a young tough and hungry kid, he lost to sammy vazquez at the state golden gloves this year which was a very very very questionable decision, and was beating domonique dolton at the u.s. championships last year, until he got a point takin off of him for holding, which he wasnt!! but dont be surprised if he winds up in the finals!!!
Re: UNDER 19
i think errol spence will win the 152 lb class..he went far in the us championships & national golden gloves..we'll see tho..

Re: UNDER 19
I predict my brother Rockne Harris has of Texas has a good chance to medal at the under 19. He has alot of experience. Silver medal national pal of 2005 jr. divison of 15-16 year old divison, close bout with Christopher Avalos of California. Lost to Jiro Delgado at the 07 eastern trials good fight. Dropped a 2-1 decison to Patric Griffin of Canada at Ringside. 2007 national pal lost on points to Shemuel Pagan. So the experience is there could be his breakout year.
Re: UNDER 19
yea Marcus Browne is good 4real he can box with those guys i seen him fight last year at ringside an boy can fight 4real the way he fights u won't tell the differnce about who has the lesser fights
Re: UNDER 19
I don't think a 28-21 win for Dolton proves that Williams was "beating" his opponent. All the warning did was add two points to Dolton's score - from 26-21 to 28-21. It was definitely close, however.165- watch out for jullian williams, and was beating domonique dolton at the u.s. championships last year, until he got a point takin off of him for holding,
Re: UNDER 19
The draw for the U-19 has been conducted and the bouts for today are scheduled for 11:00 am. Here is the info from the USA Boxing website with todays boutsheet at the end:
THE U-19 PAIRS ARE SET IN KANSAS CITY, MO
(KANSAS CITY, MO)—The draw is completed and the pairings are set for the 2008 Under 19 National Championships. More than 70 boxers aged 17 and 18 will compete in the hopes of earning a spot on the Under 19 team which will travel to Guadalajara, Mexico for the Under 19 Worlds. Eight bouts are scheduled for tomorrow with all of them taking place in the KCI Expo Center beginning at 11 a. m. CDT.
Names to know include U.S. Olympic Team Trials—Boxing participant Ronny Rios (Santa Ana, Calif.). Rios joined the featherweight division since losing to Gary Russell, Jr. in the trials. Rios could face Robert Rodriguez (Greeley, Colo.), champion of the featherweight division at the Future Stars National Championship.
The light welterweight division will see tough competition from Emanuel Tylor (Edgewood, Md.). With Dan O’Connor (Framingham, Mass.) traveling to Beijing as a training partner for the Olympians, Taylor could be the best in the division.
Also watch for Luis Arias (Milwaukee, Wisc.). This Junior Olympics National Champion and 2008 U.S. Future Stars National Champion will attempt to leave his mark in the middleweight division.

Re: UNDER 19
One boxer, Gregorio Gutierrez, has moved from 132 to 141. Others must not have made weight or didn't end up coming to the tourney as there are not enough bouts scheduled for today in the 132, 152, and 165 pound classes if all the boxers listed on USA Boxing's entry list actually appeared and made weight. Of course, there is no updated list to show who actually made weight.
Re: UNDER 19
I think it's a real shame when boxers enter tournaments and don't show. There is a provision in the rule book where a boxer can be suspended unless he/she can provide solid reasoning for why he/she did not show up. I think if this rule was ever applied, the instances of boxers not showing up after entering would diminish quite a bit. Oh well. I can dream, can't I?
Re: UNDER 19
mel-lol yes its ok 4 u to dream it..i agree with you..oh and i saw luis arias' fight today he destroyed his dude..he hit the 20 point rule in the 2nd..idk who the dude is that luis fought but he gets my props because luis was landed some bombs..
Re: UNDER 19
Well, I know today at least Josh Davis got medically DQ'd for a seperated rib. :(
Re: UNDER 19
Hmmm - eye witness report, anyone? Looks like it was close......141 lbs/64 kg: Gary Russell III, Capitol Heights, Md. dec. Emanuel Taylor, Edgewood, Md., 17-14
Re: UNDER 19
this fight was a discrase!! taylor clearly won this fight!!! he wasnt getting points for anything, i think it was the big name!!
Re: UNDER 19
Really? We don't judge on "big" or ANY names! And you only saw it from one point of view. And if he didn't get points for anything, how did he end up with an accepted score of 14?this fight was a discrase!! taylor clearly won this fight!!! he wasnt getting points for anything, i think it was the big name!!
Re: UNDER 19
when did this fight happen?
Re: UNDER 19
Mel believes that there are no biased officials.
Re: UNDER 19
Arghhhh! I didn't say that! Untrained, yes. It's very difficult to score for a "name" on the computer - whatever "name" means. I just react whenever someone uses the standard "robbed" whine. Yuk!Mel believes that there are no biased officials.
