Howard Eastman fights again - 27/09

Post by ra2006 »

After winning the Guyanese title he is now defending it.

Against a light middleweight called Andrew Lewis. The name rings a bell for some reason but can't work out why after reading his record. Anyway, nothing of quality on the Lewis record and he has been inactive for 18 months.

Faded veterans Howard Eastman and Andrew Lewis face off for the Guyanan middleweight at the National Stadium in Georgetown, Guyana, on September 27.
Eastman holds the belt, which he won with a close 12-round decision over Denny Dalton in July, and is looking to reinvent himself in his native country after recent losses to Wayne Elcock and John Duddy, and also a poor one with Kenya's Evans Ashira, over here. Eastman went by the nickname of "The Battersea Bomber" during his years in London and twice challenged for world middleweight honours but, like Bomber Graham before him, he somehow conspired to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, especially in the first stab against William Joppy but also against Bernard Hopkins, who would lose his undisputed crown five months after outboxing Eastman in February 2005 to the unremarkable Jermain Taylor.
An opportunity lost, and the Ashira struggle in April last year at little Dudley Town Hall, which Eastman barely won on points, showed that he had lost much of his snap and set him back further when Sky Sports vowed never to screen the fighter again, after prickly, eccentric Howard proved uncooperative with them. Then came Elcock and Duddy, neither of whom would have lived with Eastman in his prime.
Clearly, the former British, Commonwealth and European middleweight champion is close to the finish at 37.
Lewis is also 37 and also outscored Dalton over 12 rounds in his last fight (but over a year ago), although he enjoys the better nickname of the two in "Six Heads". Southpaw Lewis once held the WBA welterweight title, losing it to pizza-munching, woman-chasing Ricardo Mayorga, and later challenged one Antonio Margarito for the WBO title at the weight (he lasted two rounds) but is probably best known for bailing out on an opponent because he had a more pressing bout with 'the runs'. The spidery Lewis has drifted in and out of retirement over the last few years and done what little boxing he has done at light-middleweight, so Eastman will enjoy sizeable physical advantages and also advantages in sharpness and stamina. Howard also looks to retain his iron jaw. All in all, Eastman looks the pick.

Eastman is the new Yori Boy Campas.

When Froch spoke about him, he said that he could really punch in sparring. And that once he brought his Parrot called Tyson in the gym. Apparently it bit his finger near a fight and he had to have a stitch in it !
