Question re Irish Amateur Greats -1950s

Post by john2345 »

Specifically Freddie Gilroy and Fred Tiedt....

A friend reckons that Gilroy fought Freddie Tiedt when they were amateurs. I just can't see that they could have fought given the weight disparity. His fall back position is that if it wasn't Gilroy thenTiedt had a rival from Northern Ireland but my counter is that Tiedt's only significant amateur rival in Ireland was Harry Perry. I've racked my brains, searched thru records, but can't recall any major amateur from Northern Ireland who fought Tiedt.

Can anyone help clear this one up - several pints of Guinness at stake!

I asked the oldest coach in the gym and most Ama knowledgable and he says they never fought that he can recall.

I would assume weight difference at the Olympics would ahve been simular throughout their careers.
