Team Marali lodges protest with IBO
Team Marali lodges protest with IBO
Marali's team have registered a letter of protest. Unlike many orgs, IBO are going to review the fight.
3 judges will sit down and score the fight on DVD with no commentary, which in this case, there was more attention towards one fighter.
By official accounts, sitting ringside, it was a much different fight to what was put across on the TV.
If all 3 judges score overwhelmingly in favour of Marali, a rematch will be ordered. If the scores are mixed, in favour of Dib or a slight edge to Marali the result just stands as is.
This is a pretty game thing to do, because there is a pretty firm consensus from those in attendance & the viewers of TV that Marali was a clear winner.

Re: Team Marali lodges protest with IBO
So they should, At least they are going to do this. Are they the same judges from the fight. They should be made to watch it and justifie there scores.
Re: Team Marali lodges protest with IBO
Different judges. US based I'd say
Re: Team Marali lodges protest with IBO
is the tit;e vacant until the rematch after they review the fight or will dib be interim champion

Re: Team Marali lodges protest with IBO
shit thats quite surprising,..definately the justified thing to do but i really didnt think we'd see it.
i had marali by three rounds and i was giving dib every benefit of the doubt....
this is bad news for dib

Re: Team Marali lodges protest with IBO
Will it still be a blemish on his record or will they wipe it off. If they demand a rematch surely they have to declare it a no contest.
Re: Team Marali lodges protest with IBO
has it ever happened before where a fight is ruled a no contest even when there have been no technical errors/inappropriate action from the judges? No matter how bad the decision, judging is an individuals perspective, so i fail to see how this could happen.ben k wrote:Will it still be a blemish on his record or will they wipe it off. If they do complete a full review then every boxer who feels slightly aggreived with a decision will protest, then perhaps someone else can protest the protest...etc....etc...

Re: Team Marali lodges protest with IBO
Well I guess although there were no actual technicalities during the bout, if a fighter is deemed to have had an unfair loss (Marali) then it can become a no contest. It wouldn't be unlike when a fighter fails a post fight drug test which we have seen on numerous occasions, which then results in the result being changed to no contest.toppity wrote:has it ever happened before where a fight is ruled a no contest even when there have been no technical errors/inappropriate action from the judges? Then again I am not a boxing official, so I could be wrong.
Re: Team Marali lodges protest with IBO
perhaps a little different. Failed drug test is the fighters fault. Three bad judges aren't. If this is the way then fighters like the 'drunken master' Augustus would have filed heaps of protests over his career. he's been robbed more times than the NAB.adamheight wrote:Well I guess although there were no actual technicalities during the bout, if a fighter is deemed to have had an unfair loss (Marali) then it can become a no contest. Re: Team Marali lodges protest with IBO
I wonder when the IBO will make a decision - geez it is pretty poor to drag it out.
The Australian rep is Phil Austin but he has gone very quite on internet forums lately, you would think they could convene and have a decision in 48 to 72 hours after the protest is lodged, being a professional sport and all but in reality this is the IBO not one of the big three so maybe the carrier pigeon has quite crossed the Atlantic yet.
Anton should know, he ispretty clued into these things.
One point that has been made and needs to be highlighted, it wasn't Billy Dibbs fault as he had a dig and was awarded the fight.

It is suprising that they have taken this long, It should have been delt with after a few days. The IBO is a joke there's no need for there dodgy organisation in this country.king_kali_rocks wrote:I wonder when the IBO will make a decision - geez it is pretty poor to drag it out.

Re: Team Marali lodges protest with IBO
I had it a clear win for Marali
I'd like to hear how that Thai judge came up with 116 - 112
That's 4 rounds for the South African?
I guess he wants to be invited on more junkets.
And it might not do Dib any favours in the long run. Some lads I was watching the fight with the other week were saying Billy now thinks he is a real World champ and is ready for the cream of his division. From what I saw he looks a good fighter but belongs on the learning slopes for a bit longer...

Re: Team Marali lodges protest with IBO
Best you or I get onto fellow editor Philly (IBO man) & get him to spit it out :Pben k wrote:Just thought id bump this up again. Heard anything about it anyone?
You're bigger & heavier than I am, so feel free to have first go
Don't get me wrong...I like dizzy Brissy resident Philly, but wish he'd respect our (Gold Coast) 1 million No Parking zones.
Re: Team Marali lodges protest with IBO
You should have told me earlier about this Trestle Boy I would have been in here and given the low down!
The delay was a simple one: It took time to get hold of the DVD from the production company to send off to the US. 3 US judges are being used and we are now in possession of the last card. All 3 cards will be analised for their scores and also the 3 card from the night will also be cross-referenced for a consensus score (ie the rounds where all officials scored identically for a fighter) The result will be made public next week. As has been posted earlier the decision CANNOT be overturned because there was no failed drug test to turn it into a NC nor was there an error in the tallying of the cards on the master scoresheet. What we can do and what we will do if it is all in favour of Zolani is order an immediate re-match with all nuetral officials. The fight if it does take place will either be in Australia or the US.
Phil

P.S. Ben if the IBO is that dodgy, why did you want to join?

No need to get offended, 80% of the titles are the same. But to be an official you have to start somewhere.
Re: Team Marali lodges protest with IBO
I am not offended at all Ben, far from it. I am pointing out only that you find an organisation 'dodgy' in your words after you had tried unsuccessfully to join, don't think there is too much credibility in the comment that is all! ![[icon_e_biggrin.gif] :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)
Re: Team Marali lodges protest with IBO
Well.... i guess that's that!
Re: Team Marali lodges protest with IBO
Yeah houndog, the result will be made public early this week at this stage. We will want to make sure both parties know first out of respect to them

IBO orders rematch with Dib
The IBO championships Committee has ruled in favor of Zolani Marali and ordered IBO super featherweight champion Billy Dib to face Marali again within ninety days with all officials to be appointed by the IBO from Europe and the United States. A formal protest and appeal was filed on behalf of Marali with regard to the unanimous decision in favor of Dib in a controversial July 30 fight at Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. As part of a lengthy and intensive review, a panel of three senior IBO officials independently scored the fight, and ruled in favor of Marali.

Not sure. It seems like that should be the way.
