There is no way Donald Curry got 404 amateur bouts unless he started boxing when he was 5 or 6 and competed every single week of every year and participated in every tournament and national competition.

i agree, but my coach had mentioned he was the best to come out of ft worth and told me his record so i looked it up myself..its either 400-4 or 404-4 or somewhere around that..i looked at his bio when i check his pro record here on box rec..idk how he could've had that many fights, but he did win lots of amateur titles..

A lot of those wins would be gym shows which are nothing more than glorified sparring.

There was no record keeping of bouts prior to 1987, at which time the passbooks were issued. Donald Curry, and anyone else prior to 1987, could say anything he wanted regarding the amount of amateur bouts hed had and there would be NO WAY to verify it.

Kelcie Banks had 546 amateur bouts which dwarfs Curry's amount.

See above and my previous comment about Donald Curry having to box since he was 5 or 6, at least once a week, and compete in every national and international tournament. I don't think Curry even boxed as many years as Kelcie did.

Unfortunately, Curry's record didn't include Olympic performances or Corey, Mark Breland was definitely capable of continuing his winning percentage. If you dig deeper and see who he fought, I have to say Mark's Record is not as prolific, but more impressive to me. Breland was a monster. I have some of his amateur bouts online. His 110 wins include 70 RSCs, 18-0 in international competition, 6-0 in the '84 Olympics (included '80 Silver medalist Russian Serik Konakbaev and best Cuban, 1983 World Cup champion Candelario Duvergal). Per John Scully, Breland also scored stoppage victories over top Americans like All-Army champion James Mitchell, 1983 Pan-American Games welterweight champion Louis Howard, North American Champion Ron Esset, David Guttierez, and Mylon Watkins (Howard, Esset and Watkins were all National Golden Gloves Champions and Mitchell was a National ABF – formerly known as the AAU – Champion). He won the prestigious NYC Golden Gloves 5 consecutive times by amassing a 21-0 record with 19 RSCs, 14 in the first round!!

There are a lot of amateur records that are prolific, but don't include real national titles that at first glance seem unbelievable. Curry was definitely a great amateur, but I'm looking at quality versus quantity and I think Breland's record was more impressive to me.

Dick McTaggart was 634-24 and that included 3 Olympic games (Gold in '56, Bronze in '60). He only lost to eventual Gold medal winners in the two games he didn't win Gold.

There was another American with ridiculous record (600+ bouts) but I have to look up his name and the fact that I can't remember his name tells you something . . .

Darius Akbari a Persian/Greek figher has a amateur record of 115 with 60 ko's. That not the most wins, but this bad boy has the most ko's.

A "KO" in amateur boxing is not the same as a KO in the pros. It does not necessarily mean that the person KOed was actually knocked out.

I don't know how you verify any of these records since even USA Boxing may not have all of these bouts recorded. The McTaggart record has been widely reported in various sources like:

lol wow thats alot of fights..and yea i believe u about breland being great, cullen..i dont recall seeing him fight before, but i've read lots of stuff on him and how he was killin dudes..if i wasnt on my phone i'd be on youtube..i'll have to get to a cpu soon and watch his fights and the fights that u posted up from ringside & the under 19's..did u record all of javontae starks & luis arias' fights?

Breland was so tall for his weight that reach ate everyone up. Well almost everyone, Darryl Anthony did mar the otherwise perfect record. Breland may him pay in the pros though.

No I didn't get starks or cuba's fights, unfortunately.

The thing about Breland was that I've never, ever, ever, ever, ever seen a guy that tall move so fast. You would think he didn't want to fight if it wasn't for him KO'ing almost everyone. He was just a freak of nature. He's a pro trainer now and I saw him in someone's corner the other day on TV. Can't remember the guy. I've got two Golden Gloves and two Olympic bouts on the site.

i ended up losing the 1st day to a canadian guy..despite the fact that he was relentless and kept coming forward i felt like i won the fight clearly..i did spend a lil too much time on the ropes in the 3rd round, but i still felt i beat him..i should've been in the finals against that 6'5 guy from lansing, michigan..but im cool w/ everything that happened because i needed that experience..and i also got a lot of pointers on the scoring and the do's and dont's..

Did you know that if you get up against the ropes, or in the corners, you will lose 2 judges for sure, and probably a third depending on the angle they have? Need to stay in the middle of the ring and move so all the judges can see you most of the time.

Ooops - walked right into that one! My point being, of course, that boxers and coaches do exaggerate records. Unless there was an actual record keeper keeping records, nothing is verifiable.

In the case of Curry, and McTaggart, the math just doesn't make sense. Re McTaggart - how old was he when he started competing? How old was he when he stopped? How many competitions a week/month/year did he have?

mel-i didnt realize it would be like that, but now i know to keep it in the middle of the ring..the funny thing is my coach always telld us to stay away from the corners and ropes..but when u get tired the first thing to go is ur mind..im still glad i fought in the tourney because a few days leading up to it i wasnt sure because i had so much going on at home..but im gonna do the us championships & golden gloves..i'd like to do the pals, but i would have to pay for all of the travel/hotel myself and i already have lots of bills already..wish my club had sponsors and stuff like alot of the pal clubs..

Groan. When WILL you boxers start listening to your coaches! I'm really glad to hear your coach knows about the ropes and corners. Too many think their boxers will pile up points by having them get their opponent on the ropes and then wail away.
