I think it's completely possible. We have two boxers here in the DC area that get a lot of bouts. One is 13 or 14 and had a little under 200. It's possible. He's on that pace. Now, a lot of times, boxers may be well-matched with another and match up at every show. I know that I have a boxer that has 15 bouts with 3 other boxers. There just wasn't a lot out for him, so at every show, we would match up with one of these three just for the experience. I know that in DC you can get 30-40 bouts/year between shows, tournaments, pro-ams, etc. In So. California, probably even easier, wouldn't you say?boxmel wrote:Ooops - walked right into that one!Actually, yes, Mel. Dick McTaggart.![]()
My point being, of course, that boxers and coaches do exaggerate records. Unless there was an actual record keeper keeping records, nothing is verifiable.
In the case of Curry, and McTaggart, the math just doesn't make sense. Re McTaggart - how old was he when he started competing? How old was he when he stopped? How many competitions a week/month/year did he have?

Breland, record is definitely documented. Most were tournaments (NYC Golden Gloves) and international competitions. I know that he only lost once, because that guys famous!! I think anyone who would have beat Mark would definitely want everyone else to know.Auzzie001 wrote:I doubt 400-4 and 110-1 are right lol..
But Kostya Tszyu's record was pretty amazing and more beleavable, 259-11.
Re: Best amateur record...Donald Curry
Providing you can get matched, you can box 2 times a weekend in local shows all year long in So. Cal. This is over and above the tournaments. However, even with all our activity, we have never had a boxer with over 250 total amateur bouts. IIRC, Oscar's record was 220-5. It will be interesting to see with the competition age lowered to 8 if total bouts are higher. I used to keep track of the So. Cal. boxers, but haven't done that in years.I know that in DC you can get 30-40 bouts/year between shows, tournaments, pro-ams, etc. In So. California, probably even easier, wouldn't you say?

Doesn't Dusty Harrison have over 100 bouts?DCAmateurBoxing wrote:I think it's completely possible. We have two boxers here in the DC area that get a lot of bouts. I thought 8 was the competition age for a while?
Re: Best amateur record...Donald Curry
I'd have to check and see when it was implemented - but when I started in 1987, 10 was the youngest you could be to compete and you were open when you turned 16.I thought 8 was the competition age for a while?

Breland was 110-1...his record was under the spotlight since 1982 when he was like 60-1.....never lost after that and if he had lost before that I am quite sure the boxer or his coach or his friends, teammates etc would speak up about it, you know?
Re: Best amateur record...Donald Curry
Who beat Breland?
Re: Best amateur record...Donald Curry
1981 – United States Amateur Welterweight competition, lost to Darryl Anthony on points. This would be Breland's only loss an amateur.
Re: Best amateur record...Donald Curry
Back in those days we boxed 2 times in 1 night with out head gear and tank tops we looked like little pros we went by weight not so much age. Also the tournament would start on Tuesday and end on Saturday and yes these were club shows. We had a tournament every week in those daysboxmel wrote:There is no way Donald Curry got 404 amateur bouts unless he started boxing when he was 5 or 6 and competed every single week of every year and participated in every tournament and national competition.
clubs had to raise money and this was 1 way to do it.Yes Donald was the best out of Ft.Worth and Stevie Cruz was next then so on and so on.Donald really needed the fight with Sugar Ray or Hagler to be more Famous as a pro also 1980 the olympics boycotted Donald.

Thanks for the info, Premier. And you are correct - that's exactly what happened in the amateur boxing Dark Ages. ![[icon_e_biggrin.gif] :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)

One of my proudest moments was winning the state championship by winning three fights in one night...but they dont allow that anymore. I dont even think they allow two in a single night actually. I loved that aspect of amateur boxing
Re: Best amateur record...Donald Curry
Can't box more than once a day and not more than twice a week, unless it's an advancing tournament.

I've Seen Darius Akbari fight. He had a great Amateur run then he went to Vegas and became some underground illegal MMA fighter. What a waste of talent and life. This guy could have been a contender.

When Breland was on espn 2 a few weeks ago they did a background on him and it said he was 110 - 1
De la Hoya went 225 - 5
Vargas went 100 - 5
Everthing i see on google is that curry went either 400-4 or 400-6

Re: Best amateur record...Donald Curry
Could be, but there was no record keeping in those days so boxers can claim what they want and there isn't any way to verify. I can verify Oscar's record because I kept track of his record when he was amateur from the time he started recording bouts in his passbook to the Olympics.Everthing i see on google is that curry went either 400-4 or 400-6
Re: Best amateur record...Donald Curry
I boxed twice on the same day in the Welsh senior championsips in 1994
I don't think enough people enter these days to make that necessary!

It doesn't have anything to do with number of entries. It's against the rules now.I boxed twice on the same day in the Welsh senior championsips in 1994 I don't think enough people enter these days to make that necessary!
Re: Best amateur record...Donald Curry
I also boxed amateur without a headguard and with 4 ounce gloves and as a pro with 6 ouncersboxmel wrote:It doesn't have anything to do with number of entries. Yes, it sounds ancient, actually...like the 1950's.
