Angelo Dundee Question
On this board a poster has suggested or implied that
-Angelo Dundee fixed fights
-Angel Dundee said he knocked Kid Gavilan down in a sparring session and that he boxed rings around Joe Louis, even though he was much smaller than he was.
Now, there is a room for honest difference of opinion but there is a difference holding a different opinion and libeling somebody.
For instance if I say my neighbor's wife is ugly that's an opinion...If I say I saw her entertaining thirteen year old boys when her husband was at work when I didn't I have libeled her.
The latter happens all too often here....
If there is documentary evidence or any evidence that Angelo Dundee fixed fights and made outrageous claims I would like to see it...
I have read everything I could get my hands on about Angelo Dundee without any prejudice as to the author and I have never seen such allegations...
Perhaps there is...And I have new information to add to my store of knowledge....
Thank you...

Re: Angelo Dundee Question
Who would you rather have in your corner when the going is tough? Dundee, or Orange Juice?

Re: Angelo Dundee Question
A person can criticize his skills as a trainer/manager but he or she is approaching libel territory when he says that Dundee fixes fights and is mentally ill.bennie wrote:Who would you rather have in your corner when the going is tough? Dundee, or Orange Juice?

It's not about the orange juice... It's hard to believe Angee fixed fights, and said he "outboxed" Kid Gavilan and Joe Louis.
Re: Angelo Dundee Question
To say Dundee is not a good trainer-manager is absurd.
He has a proven record of being a top trainer and corner man
of champions...that is a fact.
Now for me the whole Patterson-Ellis fight and Dundee's influence
in that is just to shady to be fair or on the level. This is the fault
of the entire promotion and sanctioning body.
To have a referee as the sole judge for a title fight in 1969 is
daft. To have the referee picked and known to mingle with
one of the trainers-managers of the camps is counter productive.
I personally feel that Patterson won this fight, yes I am a Patterson
fan, but I hold no ill feelings towards Ellis who I like as a fighter, even
though I think he got a gift decision in this fight.
Thats my take on Angelo Dundee.
On a side note, I bought his biography and was upset by the fact that
he did not cover any new ground. I would have been interested to
hear more about his Ellis, Thomas, Leonard days as opposed to it
being so heavily dominated by Ali. Oh and it glosses over any controversies
very slickly.

I haven't read it...Did he really say he "outboxed" Joe Louis and Kid Gavilan?
Re: Angelo Dundee Question
No.
I dont even recall him mentoning their names.
He did talk a bit about Willie pastrano which was good
to read about him.
Alot about Ali.
A bit about Leonard and Foreman.

I didn't think Angee was that stupid...I never saw him disrespect another boxer...Why would he disresepect Joe Louis?Robinson wrote:No.

What did he say about Big George...
Big George is one of my five favorite fighters...

I assume that the poster you're referring to is granberry.TheOneIsHere2008 wrote:-Angel Dundee said he knocked Kid Gavilan down in a sparring session and that he boxed rings around Joe Louis, even though he was much smaller than he was.
However, are you sure he made those claims about Gavilan and Louis in regard to Dundee? I think I remember seeing him make that claim about Eddie Futch (though I could be wrong).

I thought he was talking about Angee...Angee never had a fight in his life and I don't think he's going to piss on Joe Freaking Louis...
It was Futch:
"In 1932, Futch won the Detroit Athletic Assn. Lightweight championship and a year later the Detroit Golden Gloves. At the Brewster Recreation Center gym, Futch became friends with the local light heavyweight sensation named Joe Louis. The future all-time great often asked Futch to spar with him, saying, "If I can hit you, I know I'm sharp."

Yes, he claimed Futch said it.

Re: Angelo Dundee Question
The answer is available on the internet... I thought he was taliking about Angee...The way our friend presented it it made either look like a dope...The true story is a bit more complex...Collins2000 wrote:My2Sense wrote:I assume that the poster you're referring to is granberry.TheOneIsHere2008 wrote:-Angel Dundee said he knocked Kid Gavilan down in a sparring session and that he boxed rings around Joe Louis, even though he was much smaller than he was.
