I got my NCTJ postgrad diploma in newspaper journalism (well, officially november) at nott trent after my english undergrad at leeds. i then applied for some entry level jobs but was offered a deputy editor job for an online magazine, im 2 days in and im gonna be editor in 2 weeks or so while the editor is on holiday! shitting myself! also today i have been interviewing people for the same job i applied for!

im gonna be interviewing gordon ramsay in the near future. (not for the same job i applied for).

My Missus was a Recruitment Consultant and it's a tough graft. You have to pretty much sell your soul at times. There's no room for nice guys.

I havent got 1 single qualification but have lied on my cv saying stuff like i have 10 gcse's 3 alevels and a degree in sport science. I had the bottle to go through with it and now have a top job in recruitment.

I'm not going to tilt the lance because I have lied on a CV. Nothing serious - just a few fibs to cover up periods of long term unemployment! (Can we have a phone number of the supervisor you worked for, aaaaaaaaaaaah sorry - they closed down in 1996!)

Teddy, I think its a bit unfair to describe it as "old git mentality".

Those posters commending you for your cunning obviously wouldn't think the same if you had done the same to become their doctor or dentist.

You couldn't possibly of done that to become a doctor or dentist.

Let's not get daft about it. He does a sales role which involves good communications skills, not open heart surgery.

I find it curious that the guys on here who seem to object most to Ted's CV doctoring are those who feel they were cheated by the system when they didn't get into Oxbridge or wherever else. Get over it fellas it's not Ted's fault.

It's just not on. I've been on here for a few years now with several thousand posts and hardly had a crossed word with anyone. I'm really p'd off with this.

As for you, Wax On...the reason I'm angry at teddy's actions is because I have spent my entire professional career TEACHING kids and trying to help them gain the exams he lied about having. People the likes of teddy p*ss all over what I'm trying to do.

Can you separate this from my earlier post about Oxbridge? It has absolutely nothing to do with it.

You're all entitled to your opinions of course but I hope you can understand my position. If you, or a family member had worked hard to get the qualifications and had been pipped at the interview by teddy, most of you wouldn't have been saying 'well done, mate'.

Only met him the once so can't comment with any authority but think he sets an appalling example in terms of management style and the schoolyard approach to swearing is just tiresome.
Extremely clever businessman in terms of building himself as a brand though.

(70 teachers) staffroom while he read out my CV that I sent the recruiting agency. You know the crap you
put on a CV as 'defining statments' mine were 'I have never took drugs and I don't smoke or drink'

So the VP goes 'you have never took drugs?'

'No'

Ian, I understand why you would be angry at this, but I also don't like to see a man get berated for getting on in life. Which is why I felt compelled to join the debate in the first place.

I think my views are coloured by the fact that I'm a recruitment consultant, and as someone just said earlier, it's a dog eat dog industry, where anything goes in some sectors (not in my company I might add), so why not start off as you mean to go on by fibbing on your CV?

The same is not true of most other industries where ethic are more prevalent, such as journalism, so I can see your side too.

I knew nothing of the PM's however, don't agree with that at all. Anything said, whould be shared by and judged by all.

Grades don't mean that much to a lot of people:

I got 8 grade 1's for my standard grades (like GCSE's)
5 Grade A's for my highers (like A levels)

I went to Uni, got a first class honours in a biological science and was awarded a prize for being the top of the faculty and was told I got 18 A's in my final exams. I am delighted with what I got obviously, I worked hard for it and I always have these grades for my CV.

However at the moment I am doing a PhD, which I really don't enjoy (thats why im on here!) - Science pay prospects are pretty shit and the hours they expect you to work in academia are ridiculous.

So I have been applying for jobs in sport (I write a bit for a boxing website as well and used to be an athlete) but keep getting told my degree is not really suitable and mainly I don't have enough experience.

Im going to do my level 1 coaching in athletics, keep up the boxing writing and keep looking out for some sort of decent job in sport.

Anyway after my waffle..... my point is a lot of employers seem to look at experience a lot more than they do grades

Completely agree with everyone... not that I have those levels of qualifications - but agree with everything.

GCSEs are a waste of time, like I posted earlier I left school with feck all, joined the paras, spent 5 years with them and then got into debt collecting which I am still doing now. As it is I am making more money than most of my schoolmates will ever see(including the ones who got straight A's/Uni degrees etc.) I've already made £20k this year which isn't bad for a unqualified 24 year old is it.

Unless you have the common sense to go with those qualifications then them grades aren't worth a carrot.
