Because of that you may need to be more specific.....some think the gentleman who owned that moniker in the past might be deserving of just as much if not more respect than the current person "leasing" the name.

kiki would you grant that no one has been as successful as DLH as marketing and making good use of their talent in terms of gaining notoriety and/or turning those skills into revenue? I mean no disrespect to DLH or any other fighter when I say this. I think DLH is truly one of the greats......but one of his great talents has been marketing his great skills and talents as well. Not everyone who has the talent for fighting was also blessed with that "P.T. Barnum factor that Oscar obviously has.

I grant you that DLH has been the best market fighter, but that doesn't make the best fighter,
had he been fighting in the day when there were 8 champions, I don't think that anybody would say that he would have won as many titles as he has, title imo don't mean dick anymore.

The ad on the right is from Norm Lockwood's gas station, Norm, was the glove man at the Olympic.

I remember Norm very well and saw the ad.

I saw that ad and I remember Norm as well. Norm built that sit-up table that was located in the locker room. There must have been a million sit-ups done on that table. It was so worn it had an ass shape groove on it. It was a ugly thing but it held up well. In some of the photos of the gym floating around you can see that table when it was set up near the heavy bags. Whatever became of Norm? I'm sure he's gone by now. He was also a dog breeder, Airedales, I believe, or am I confusing him with someone else?

I knew Norm for years, never knew that he was a dog breeder, not saying that he wasn't, only that I never knew that. he died some years ago at age 95-96, he worked the corner in some of Frankie's and Tony's fights, hell of a nice guy.

This book is next on my list. It was a long time coming. Kudos to Chuck Johnston and Tracy Callis. I love that cover. Los Angeles has always been a very special fight town, very loyal to it's fighters. California in general has produced some great fighters.

Thanks Rick, I do remember that Karl Nelson bred Airedales. Mel spoke about him often. For some reason, probably because I'm getting senile, I got them confused. By the way, I don't own an Airedale but the are incredible dogs, fight like hell, and they are among the smartest breed of dogs, but I'm sure you already know that. Thanks for clearing that up for me, and sorry about the confusion Frank.

Yeah Randy, Airedales are fighting dogs and have what is known as a ''punishing jaw'' second only to an American pit bull terrior in bite strength. The airedale comes out of England and Karl Nelson became the only American breeder in history invited to the UK to judge this breed in Brits most prestigeous dog show, ''Crufts'' (spelling?). Naturally, I've had several airedales over the years and you are right, great dogs. With my family blood Irish, English and American indian, I'm partial to this dead game breed. BTW, you've an exceptional memory! Rick

Frank . . . Paulie Armstead passed away less than two years ago in Las Vegas and was cremated in Inglewood Cemetary. Out of respect for this former California champ would you please post his record. The names he fought are like a ''who's who'' of a special era. Rick
