Can Boxing emulate UFC?

Post by Cannibal »

Right, in the world of MMA you have numerous organizations with lots of "world" titles just like boxing. However, UFC stands head and shoulders above the rest by signing the top fighters to exclusive contracts to fight only under their banner and the best end up fighting the best a lot more than it happens in boxing.

My question is, if a major money man got involved, is it feasible for a good chunk of the world's top boxers to be taken under one banner? Like the way the UFC does their events as UFC 87 and what not, you'd have something like WBC 23 and stuff.

In a word, no.

The boxing business is at far too 'mature' a stage for a single monopoly like UFC to dominate the scene, unlike MMA which is in it's relative infancy.

There are too many interested parties, too many powerful players and too much money for one overseeing body to have the level of control you suggest.

Dana White et al are doing well so far at re-buffing the potential rivals to their all powerful brand, but this dominance will not last long term IMO.

As the pie gets larger more and more rivals will enter the arena, with one or two (at the moment Elite XC and Affliction look to be the 2 most likely to take this spot) in time coming to challenge the dominance of the hitherto pre-eminent organisation.

The lack of control and finanical clout welded by individual fighters has helped UFC keep control of the exploding MMA world but as fighters gain in power (think Fedor, Couture and other such 'renegades') the UFC will no longer be able to satisfy and control all under a single banner.

Dont forget, the UFC is not some sort of regulatory authority in the shape of an athletic commision or even a governing body, but is simply a very successful, quickly expanding promoter with the same core drive for profitability and stature that all promotional companies embody.

MMA looks to have a lot of what pro boxing has lacked over the last few decades - consistent, even match making and a simple world championship structure. All I will say is enjoy it whilst it last because there is too much money to be made for this to remain the status quo for much longer..

made me laugh and laugh and laugh (well, not really)

So tell me then, if the UFC is the all wonderful thing some people seem to want it to be, why has (deep breath)

Fedor Emelianenko never fought there? (best heavy of the last 5 years)

Bob Sapp never fought there? (biggest MMA draw of all time)

Tim Sylvia, Mirko Filipović and Josh Barnett no longer there?

MMA is as bad as boxing for the best fighters not fighting each other, see Fedor and Co-Crop for eg

So you see UFC on TV and believe what they say about all the best fighters fighting each other with no politics?

You ignorant prole

Does that make you hard being an internet prick? I bet you ruined your underpants with that little blurb.

UFC isn't perfect but it is doing a lot of things right when it comes to control. To suggest it is as bad as boxing when it comes to match making is laughable. UFC is often evenly matched through their cards and will have few huge fights through the year. It is coherent and easily followable as opposed to the chaotic world of boxing where any newcomers to the sport have no clue what's going on.

My point in this wasn't to talk about the UFC and everyone contained within it. I wished to talk about if the positive aspects of it could be applied to improving the boxing world, but you saw the need to drag it into a pointless attack.

I don't give a shit about your rankings of what fighter is better than the next. The fact is, UFC has the greatest collection of MMA fighters in the world, is a highly recognized brand and has provided a continuity to the MMA world.

So to rephrase those elegant words of yours...

eff off you twat!

KG,

to answer your supposedly 'well informed' points:

Fedor Emelianenko never fought there? (best heavy of the last 5 years)
Fedor is managed by Russians who are hard negotiators and they give few concessions where their fighter is concerned (ie insistence that he can still compete in combat sambo whilst under contract to an organisation etc). White just couldnt come to a deal with them that suited both parties.

Bob Sapp never fought there? (biggest MMA draw of all time)
Bob Sapp was a huge draw in Japan ONLY, due to his freakish build and persona. Whilst he may have a K1 win over Ernesto Hoost and a decent showing against Noguiera (UFC interim champ) he is nothing more than a side show and not a great fighter - go and watch his 'fight' with Hong Man Choi for evidence of this. He showed his true warrior spirit (or lack of it) in his loss to Cro Cop. Poor, poor example.

Tim Sylvia, Mirko Filipović and Josh Barnett no longer there?

Tim Sylvia doesnt fight there because he bored everyone to death for the last 2 years with his pedestrian kickboxing. The best thing to happen to the UFC was Couture kicking his ass for 5 rounds. A great beat down I thoroughly enjoyed.

Mirko Filipovic has suffered a crisis of confidence and withdrew to smaller promotions by mutual consent to regain his confidence and credibility

whilst Josh Barnett has personal issues with Dana White, was originally cast aside for flunking a steriods test and has never come back due to not seeing eye to eye with Dana White. He is still a great fighter and one of my favourites but at least he did compete in the UFC and hold their belt for some time.

Far better examples of fighters outside of the UFCs grasp would have been:

Kid Yamamoto, Paulo Filho, Roy Nelson (bet you aint even heard of him KG, much less seen him fight - now tell the truth..), Jake Shields, Ricardo Arona, Jacare, Dennis Kang, Cung Le, Nick Diaz, Alistair Overeem, JZ Calvancante, Matt Lindland, Joachim Hansen, Kazuo Misaki

UFC is not the 'be all and end all' off of MMA but it IS a remarkably well run and well publicised promotion with excellent match making, great value for money for the paying customer and it put on extremely well run shows. Boxing CAN learn a hell of a lot from those aspects.

please go away and read up on the subject before posting a thread about it

I think you should take your own advice KG - you used to be a witty and occassionally insightful poster. Now you are just a tired and over played troll.

Good posts Terry and Cannibal!

I'd include Uriah Faber and Jens Pulver in the list of great fighters outside the UFC, but obviously they're weight class lets them down and they're still owned by Zuffa because of WEC.

Bob Sapp biggest MMA draw of all time, lol, and Kimbo Sapp is the next Royce Gracie.

Well that just proves my point, what has boxing got to learn from the above example? It just sounds like the same old crap we get in boxing?

Not a poor, poor example at all, he is, whatever way you look at it Live attendance, PPV numbers, TV ratings, the biggest draw in MMA history. The fact he cant really fight is by the by. Although the fight where he stuck Nogueira on his head was a classic. Biggest MMA company in the world should be able to work with the biggest draw

But the original posts point is that with UFC has the top fighters and the best fights, something boxing doesnt have, that just isnt true as many/most of the top fighters dont fight there

Yes they are all good examples, well done... Yes i have seen Roy Nelson fight and he's OK, nothing to wet oneself over

UFC is not the 'be all and end all' off of MMA but it IS a remarkably well run and well publicised promotion with excellent match making, great value for money for the paying customer and it put on extremely well run shows. Boxing CAN learn a hell of a lot from those aspects.
Yeah, thats the same argument everyone was saying about WWF like 10 years ago, as soon as UFC cools off it will be what can UFC learn from boxing

Feckin great reply Terrible Terry!! Couldnt have put it better myself :D What a redneck for the big mouth, laughed my arse off  Trying to sound as if he knows everything but gets schooled. Back of the fuckin net my son!
To answer the question about UFC, the boxing guys could learn a thing or two, but they wont cause they all have their eyes shut. They all protect their money horses, they wont take the risk. You see guys in the UFC all the time that are unbeaten getting matched uo, how often do you see it in boxing, hardly ever!
I love the boxng game, but when you look at the programme card, you just know who will win 99% of the time. The same cant be said for the UFC, there are upsets all the time, THATS what makes it good. Man I would love Amir Khan to enter UFC and get broken in half by BJ Penn, ok, I know I'm having a daydream but you can hope!

My main issue with Boxing is that UFC looks after it's competitors better and they're well paid. The undercard fighters get 5k, excluding bonuses, although I'm unsure of the currency.

Also, it's hard to market Boxing with regards to merchandise. You're not gonna be able to buy a WBC t-shirt with De La Hoya on the front after all. But you can go into a Target store and buy a Liddell UFC t-shirt.

Affliction are helping by their cross over into boxing with Hatton, Mayweather, Pavlik and Margarito t-shirts though.

Yeah totally agree with you. UfC have got some asskicking merchandise. I didnt realise the undercard fighters got about 5k, how much does the champ get any idea?

Sorry fella, didn't ask. I would've thought it varies based upon buy rate, but the impression I got from them for overall wages for a year was a few million for the top stars.

I was also told, contrary to reports, Dana White was at the jail before Rampage was.

Boxing's the best sport in the world, hands down, but the UFC is far and away the best promotional entity in the world. They run rings out of all the so-called promoters trying to do their thing in boxing. Unlike today's boxing promoters, the UFC, for now at least, tick all the boxes. Event production is second to none. Quality, competitive match-ups. Marketable stars. Shows stacked from top to bottom with compelling fights. Pre-fight promotional videos that wipe the floor with boxing's alternatives.

The UFC hit the target audience (young kids, teens, those in their early-20s) that boxing has distanced itself from. Boxing promoters have become so concerned with one-upmanship and protecting their own house that they've forgotten about the importance of the bigger picture - the growth of the sport. Nobody gives a shit how boxing is perceived by the masses so long as they make their cut. On the flipside, the UFC, as a promoter and a brand, are doing everything they can to take their shit mainstream.

I agree with Terry, the UFC will eventually run into trouble from other promoters looking to follow suit. It's inevitable - there's a lot of money to be made. In the meantime, though, they are a template from which lots of people, especially in boxing, can learn from. I've been to one UFC show and dozens of boxing shows, here and abroad. The UFC event surpassed all the boxing shows I'd been to, and I went in knowing very little about the fighters or the fights. In terms of putting on an event, nobody does it better.
