Early in his acting career, Flynn used to often tell people that he had represented Ireland in amateur boxing.

Here's one for the Chicago crew. When I was living on Polk and Oakley Streets and the conversation got around to sports,it was the usual. ,Marciano,Pep,Basilio. Mostly boxers.
When it was baseball,DiMaggio,Rizzuto,Berra, and here's the kicker,Roy Campenella. You see on West Side, Campy was always considered Italian. The Spaghetti eaters loved this guy. He might have been Black, but he was Italian. If you had an ounce of Italian blood in you,you qualified to be an Italian. It offset all the other blood you had . Take my word,if it was a popularity contest between Joe Louis and Roy Campenella on Taylor Street,Joe would show ciphers in the win column.

Look at DeNiro. He's 3/4 Irish, but that Italian blood,at least in Goombaland, disqualifies him from kissing the Blarney Stone. But he can kiss the ring on the Godfather.

The way it would go down for the Irish guy would be,( and Ive seen this),
The Turkey would be in the Tavern with half a snoot full yucking it up with his pals when the bartender gives him the phone. The wife is on the line. She is pissed and giving it to him good".Where the hell are you?You said you were coming home right after work and not drinkin with those freakin bums you call friends".
Well , after a little while of this, the Mick starts screamin into the phone at her . Really puttin on a show for the boys. He dont take no shit from the old lady.
Problem is, hes screamin at a dial tone.
Hey Pug

Remember that cartoon strip "Andy Capp?" Andy would always be sleeping on the couch with his face to the back of the sofa with his shoes off and just the socks left on. Everyday him and the wife at the pub with the half full glass of beer.

Hey buddy. I just thought of somethin'. This will make you laugh. One night when I was on vacation way down in Mexaco,I was driving through this terrible thunder storm. I got the radio on and the wiper blades on after burners.

Well I ain't getting nothing on the radio. I keep hitting the "scan" button and all it keeps doing is the numbers going around in a circle. Finally after a few minutes of nothing,it stops on a station. I could barely make it out,but it was music. Fading in and out and staticy. But it cleared a little. I swear, it was a band playing Irish Jigs. I burst out laughin'. I thought about you right away. How did you find me?

Well , its my Uncle John.
Hes been following you guys around for a couple months now.
Hes made a couple apperances in this thread.

Greek Town can get a bit crowded, but you've got several eating places there, and they go from relatively cheap to expensive. I think Daina, was the one I used to go for the buffet. It was pretty good.

Hey Chicago,They still have that joint near Wrigley field that Harry Caray used to own.? When I was a kid,Jack Brickhouse was the only announcer in the world for me. Live games on TV during the summer. Hank Saur was my favorite Cub. Of course my dad loved Phil Cavarretta. I remember when the foul balls were hit straight back. All us kids at the park would go "OOOOOO OOOOOP and then on the way down OOOOOO UP. What a ballpark. I was a Sox fan. My dad thought the Comiskey's were tight with their dough. I liked the Bears. My dad liked the Cards. Thought Halas was cheap also. He was right.

Hey Pug I'm gonna' start somethin' here. Benny said the Irish are crazy. I wanted to ask him what they ate over there in England besides Fish and Chips. They have more fast food joints than the States. Now that's crazy.

Phil Cavaretta's parents owned a little grocery store on Armitage. I could be wrong, but I think they were Northern Italians. In the late 19th century, the Northerners founded Assumption parish right near the Merchandise Mart. Phil came to the Cubs right from Lane Tech at age 18.

Only knew of Harry Caray's restaurant in River North, which was pretty pricey with washroom attendents.

There is a thread in "Boxers of the past" about the Bobby Chacon vs Bazooka Limon 4, I was there for that fight and the thread reminded me about something that happened after the fight, the commish was looking for Bobby to get a urine sample and they couldn't fine him, a friend of mine who is a big name in the boxing community told the commish "Don't worry, I'll fine him and get the urine sample for you" he grab a clean beer cup, went to the men's room and piss in the cup and he turns that into the commish as Bobby's sample, and it passed!... :P
