Jackie Fields of the United States won gold at featherweight in the 1924 Paris Olympics at the age of 16 years, 5 months and 11 days. He's the youngest boxer ever to win the gold medal. When the world amateur boxing association or (AIBA) decided to set an age limit in joining the Olympics at 17 years old. Floyd Patterson became the youngest Olympic boxer under these rules to win Middleweight gold at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics at the age of 17 years, 6 months and 28 days.

How old was Terry Spinks, I know he looked about 11.

How old was Micheal Spinks.
Re: Who is the youngest boxer to ever win a gold medal
great fighter, excellent record http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?hu ... &cat=boxer and with wins over the Dundee boys, Gorilla Jones and Lou Brouillard (men who became greats at heavier weights), it just goes to show you how good Top Level fighters really are/were, even if we don't know a lot about them or talk about them much!

Even younger perhaps!stujones wrote:How old was Terry Spinks, I know he looked about 11.
I recently see a picture of Spinks with his gold medal shortly after winning it, & I couldn't believe he was 18.

Despite the upper age limit, Wilfredo Gomez seriously slipped the net when he boxed in the 1972 Olympics at all of 15. He was outscored at flyweight in his first bout.
America's Davey Lee Armstrong was only 16 but also sneaked into Munich (and made it to the light-flyweight second series).

I know. Imagine having to point out to your bird who you were beaten by...she'd probably go up and buy him an ice cream and ruffle his hair. He literally did look about 13.Rocky Balboa wrote:Even younger perhaps!stujones wrote:How old was Terry Spinks, I know he looked about 11.![]()

Not in 1956, Ian. The Brits, even the boyish-looking Brits, were BAD.

Sorry to change the subject mate, but I'm trying to learn about nutrition, at the moment I know next to nothing. Could you point me in the right direction with a good book to start with? Thanks.Phenomenal-Nutrition wrote:Was Clay/ALi 18/19?

I just meant how young Terry looked.
Too much too young? Great shame the way things went for him. I spent a bit of time with him and Sammy McCarthy a while back...nice fellas.

One of those moments Ill never Forget Spinks at 17 Beating a 300 plus Russian in the Final who had lost about 4 bouts sure He stopped Him and Leon stopping a Cuban in 2. Micheal was destined to be Great I thought after watching Him that night.

I think Meldrick Taylor was 17 when he won the gold as well. What a talented side the 1984 USA team were.

thats right Taylor was a baby at 17. I always enjoyed watching him fight - a fighter with a true 'Philly' mentality.REAL_DEAL wrote:I think Meldrick Taylor was 17 when he won the gold as well. What a talented side the 1984 USA team were.
Re: Who is the youngest boxer to ever win a gold medal
can anyone put the spinks fights on here
Re: Who is the youngest boxer to ever win a gold medal
Wasn't the '84 olympics boycotted by the commies though? Not so great if the Cubans and Soviets didn't take partREAL_DEAL wrote:I think Meldrick Taylor was 17 when he won the gold as well. What a talented side the 1984 USA team were.
Re: Who is the youngest boxer to ever win a gold medal
Communist boycott or not, any team with Meldrick Taylor, Mark Breland, Pernell Whittaker, Evander Holyfield and Virgil Hill in it is still pretty sh*t hot as far as I'm concerned.banjo wrote:Wasn't the '84 olympics boycotted by the commies though? I've heard that Sugar Ray Leonard almost made the US Olympic Team in Munich 1972 and would have been among the favourites for gold.
He would have been 16... how accurate though was this story?

He didnt start Boxing till He was 15 Stu
Re: Who is the youngest boxer to ever win a gold medal
Leonard did box in the '72 US Olympic Trials, lying about his age, but lost to the much more experienced Greg Whaley of Cincinnati at lightweight.
Jerome Artis and Randy Shields are the only other Americans to beat Leonard as an amateur.
