Wilfredo Gomez vs. Alfredo Layne--hated to see a great, aging fighter lose his title to such a mediocre opponent
Bobby Chacon vs Ray Mancini---hated to see a great, aging fighter move up against a younger, heavier, stronger champion he had no hope of beating
Gene Hatcher and Johnny Bumphus vs Lloyd Honeyghan, Hilario Zapata vs Sung-Kil Moon---three guys, Hatcher, Bumphus and Zapata, who could barely stand up by the time these fights happened. Last fights for Bumphus and Zapata, and Hatcher was given the title "shot" after losing his previous fight.
Jorge Castro vs J.C. Gomez---Castro was a former middleweight champion who was essentially ignored for years by super middleweight and lt. heavy champions of the late 1990s. So he ballooned up to fight a talented, undefeated cruiserweight champion who had a four-pound and 11 1/2-inch reach advantage

I'm sure the fight would have been so different.Robinson wrote:Larry Holmes-Mike Tyson 1988 (I wish it happened in 1986 or 1991)

Holmes didn't have enough left in 86 to beat Tyson nor was Tyson so out of gas in 91 that he would have lost.I Feel Fine wrote:I'm sure the fight would have been so different.Robinson wrote:Larry Holmes-Mike Tyson 1988 (I wish it happened in 1986 or 1991)
No way. The only Holmes that beats Tyson is pre 1980 Holmes. Tyson is never going to be affected by Holmes' punches so Holmes would have to beat him by sticking, holding, and moving...

I hope my sarcasm was clear; I agree that neither version of Holmes would have done any different.

What are you talking about? I loved these types of fights. Gene and especially Lloyd were brilliant with his suffocating pressure. This is how you win fights when faced with a boxer. Those two didnt wait around to box Bumphus and make his evening nice and cozy. They crowded him and didnt give him any time to think.giacomino wrote:Wilfredo Gomez vs. Alfredo Layne--hated to see a great, aging fighter lose his title to such a mediocre opponent

I wasn't saying anything bad about the styles of Hatcher or Honeyghan, and I wasn't talking about their fights individually against Bumphus. I was saying I hated to see Hatcher in his fight with Honeyghan, and Bumphus in his fight with Honeyghan, because Hatcher and Bumphus were completely shot when the fights happened. Both were essentially shot junior welterweights fighting a full-fledged welterweight champion in his prime. I saw both Hatcher-Honeyghan and Bumphus-Honeyghan and they were complete mismatches.Elton John wrote:What are you talking about? I loved these types of fights. Re: Fights You Wished Never Happened
Obviously it would be easy to pick a lot of fights where one man was old, whether it be Robinson or Charles or Ali or Holyfield. And it would be very easy to go with a fight where one fighter was badly injured or killed. Those would likely come first.
I guess, besides those, one would be Holyfield-Tyson II. For all the talk about how much Tyson did for boxing and how many fans he brought in, I think that one fight probably hurt boxing more than any other fight, at least in recent decades. That was a disaster.

I'm the same mate!Lewis/Tyson
McBride/Tyson
Williams/Tyson (get my point?)
In respect of Lewis-Tyson, I remember saying to my brother that Tyson looked like he knew in his own mind that he was on a hiding to nothing. For the first time in his career during his ring walk, Tyson looked, I don't know, nervous perhaps, like he knew that he was not going to win!
All the talk about how Mike was training well for the fight - I reckon that was all bullshit. I mean Tyson loked fat 234lbs. In his next fight after Lewis, against Etienne, Mike weighed 226lbs & looked in much better condition.
