Nelson Romine wins Ohio Welterweight Title

Post by moonwalker »

Columbus, Ohio's Nelson Romine (9-1-2) won the vacant Ohio Welterweight Title Saturday, August 23rd when his opponent Brian Camechis (17-2) retired in between the sixth and seventh round.

Camechis, fighting in his hometown Glouster, Ohio for the first time in his professional career, won the first three rounds with dozens of mostly body punch combinations. Romine was a passive counter puncher who stood straight up the entire fight.

In the fourth round Camechis took a knee after obsorbing a hard left hook from Romine. In the sixth round Camechis stopped moving in and out and stayed close to Romine and didn't throw many punches. Romine became more aggressive and started throwing more punches. Camechis took a knee again in the sixth round after absorbing a hard combination from Romine.

Camechis' corner would not let their fighter answer the bell for the seventh round. Romine, who is managed by John Johnson, was awarded the impressive looking championship belt.

A bad night for Glouster fighters as Cory Tipple (4-2) was knocked out in the first round by Cleveland's Will Nixon (2-0). The scheduled 4 rounder was billed at 142 pounds. Tipple, a tall, thin, beanpole, did not take advantage of his height and reach advantage and let Nixon get inside several times. Nearly two minutes into the fight Nixon landed a straight right hand that floored Tipple for the ten count.

In a women's match, listed in the program at 125 pounds, local area fighter Valerie Defrietas (1-1)(Coolsville, Ohio) took a unanimous four round decision over Stacey Rogers (0-2) of Willard, Ohio (near Mansfield). Rogers won the first round hands down. Stacey landed several stiff left jabs and right crosses. Defrietas did not land a punch in the first round. In the second round Defrietas started to find her range and made it a close round. Defrietas come on strong in the third and fourth rounds to win the decision.

This was the first sanctioned professional boxing card ever staged in the tiny town of Glouster. The show began with six amateur bouts. It was a sell out crowd held at the Trimble High School gymnasium.

The only link I could find regarding the boxing is from http://www.logandaily.com
This article talks about the Camechis-Romine fight before it happened. Perhaps they will publish the results tomorrow.

I checked the Athens, Ohio online newspaper and they apparently only report on Ohio University sports. I check several other nearby on-line newpapers and came up with nothing.

Camechis fights for Ohio
welterweight title tonight
By KEVIN WISEMAN

GLOUSTER — Brian Camechis has accomplished a lot in his professional boxing career.

The Glouster native and Logan resident, better known as the Golden Greek, has posted a 17-1 career record. He’s boxed anywhere from Wheeling, W.Va., to Pittsburgh to Montreal.

But perhaps his biggest, and most anticipated moment is tonight. That’s when Camechis will take the ring in his own backyard at Trimble High School for a professional fight. Not only it is a chance for Camechis to fight close to his fans, but he has a chance to add a championship to his list of accomplishments. “This has been a dream of mine since about fight No. 10,” Camechis said. “I’ve had 18 pro fights and when I started to get a big following, I thought, ‘Man I’d like to do this close to home.’ I grew up in a small town and there were a lot of people in the area who watched me grow up and haven’t had a chance to see a live fight. I really wanted to give them an accessible fight to come to and here it is.

“There will probably be a couple hundred people at this fight that have never been to a live one. That’s cool for me. It will be one of the highlights of my career.”

The title that is on the line is the State of Ohio Welterweight Championship. The title has been vacant, and the Ohio State Athletic Commission approved for it to go back up for grabs Saturday in Glouster.

Camechis’ opponent will be Columbus native Nelson Romine. The 26-year old comes in with a record of 8-1-1. His trainer, John Johnson, was Buster Douglas’ trainer when he knocked out Mike Tyson in 1990.

Camechis said he saw Romine box when he was an amateur, and that Romine was, “lightening fast with his hands.”

Camechis’ trainer, the legendary Sam Jones, also said Romine’s style of boxing is real quick.

“He likes to keep the bout in the middle of the ring,” Jones said. “He likes quick jabs, move from left to right and get his points. He likes to move in and out and around the ring.”

Jones said Camechis’ style will be to apply pressure to the quick Romine.

“What Brian likes to do is outwork his opponent,” Jones continued. “He’ll throw three or four punches and take his boxer into the ropes where he can score. He’s an excellent boxer. They’ve got two different styles, so who can impose their will?”

The last time Camechis took the ring, he suffered his first loss as a pro. The fight took place in Montreal and was a 12-round battle that came down to a judge’s decision. Camechis said the loss hurt but after some time to reflect on it, he’s come back and worked even harder.

“I still benefited from that loss,” Camechis said. “Not too many fighters out of Ohio can say they went 12 rounds with the Canadian champ. I look at that for me as, ‘It’s OK, everybody loses a fight.’ There’s not too many fighters that ever retire undefeated. I’ve kind of settled myself with that thought.”

Camechis said it is important for him to bounce back in front of the first crowd to watch a professional boxing match in Glouster since 1977 when Jones competed.

“It’s got to stay here,” Camechis said of the championship belt. “This is a no-lose situation, I’ve got to win. That’s what helped me train. I’ve had that in my head that I can’t lose. I mean, what can you say, not too many fighters even get an opportunity to fight for a belt, and I get to fight for it right here in my hometown.”

Camechis encouraged the fans to come down to the high school because he feeds off the crowd.

“The thought of me losing, I don’t like the way that thought crosses me. I try not to think about it. I can’t lose. I have no options around this.”

The bout is set for eight rounds.

Ringside tickets for the event, which includes several other bouts starting at 7:30 p.m., are $50, while floor seats are $30. General admission tickets are $20. Tickets can be bought at the high school tonight or by calling Sam Jones at 767-2699.

‘Golden Greek’ defeated in fight for welterweight title
Logan resident is Trimble High grad

GLOUSTER — Fans packed Bill White Gymnasium Saturday night to cheer one of their own during a championship title fight.

Although the results were not as desired at Trimble High School, Brian “The Golden Greek” Camechis remains a “Champion In Life” for the people of Glouster.

Camechis (17-2), a graduate of Trimble and a Logan resident, battled Nelson Romine (9-1-2) for the vacant Ohio Welterweight Title in the main event of Saturday’s ProAm show.

The battle was hotly contested but in the end, a damaged eye would seal the fate of “The Golden Greek” and allow Romine to be crowned champion

“He’s tough,” Romine said of his opponent. “I was trying to wear him down for later rounds. He was awkward, too, man. He doesn’t do stuff by textbook. He throws punches, he bends down… just awkward, real awkward. It took a couple rounds for me to catch on to him but he was tough, tough as nails man.”

Romine said it felt good to be a champion but went back to his praise for Camechis.

“He’s tough though, real tough.”

The fans gave Romine a nice ovation on his way to the ring to start the fight but it paled in comparison to the one the hometown fighter received.

Camechis’ music hit and the crowd jumped to their feet for their champion, giving “The Golden Greek” a thunderous standing ovation. Throughout the fight, the fans continued to try to will Camechis to throw a little faster and a little harder.

In the opening round, Romine established a defensive stance in the middle of the ring while Camechis began his trademark technique of working the body. The two used the first round to feel each other out and look for weaknesses. In round two, Romine came out with lightning quick jabs but quickly settled back into defensive mode allowing Camechis to work back inside.

Camechis stayed with the body in the third but began to mix in blows to the head. Romine answered back with a big right hook and began to open up on Camechis but “The Golden Greek” responded and rebounded with a strong defense.

Camechis worked through the fourth round and landed a strong right hook to the jaw of Romine. Romine tried to answer but Camechis found another gear and laid into his opponent with flurries of rights and lefts, effectively putting Romine into a stall mode.

Romine turned the tide in the fifth by landing a left hook to the face that took Camechis to the canvas. Almost immediately, a bruise began to take shape and Camechis’ right eye began to swell shut. It became a target for Romine.

“I think I was handling my own pretty good for the first four rounds, maybe five. Then in the fifth round, he caught me. I didn’t see the punch coming,” said Camechis. “He caught me clean, a flash knockdown. I just kinda took my time and got back up. I recovered pretty good from that, mainly because of what Sam (Jones) has trained me to do.

“That kinda started me to the point where I couldn’t move my head where I wanted to. I wasn’t bobbing and weaving like I did the first four rounds so I was eating a lot of his jabs and punches. He had a real good fast hard jab. That’s what starting the swelling on my eye.”

In the sixth round, Romine put together a list of combinations on Camechis who put his all in some combos of his own. The back-and-forth tilt went the way of Romine after the Columbus fighter landed three hard shots to the body, dropping “The Golden Greek” to one knee. The round ended with Camechis doing his best to put on a series of offensive maneuvers but Romine took them all in stride.

“I can’t see below. My peripheral vision’s gone so he caught me with that liver shot. Once again I did the best I could to recover from that then I was just so starched, I didn’t have any arm and I couldn’t punch my way out,” said Camechis.

Once back in the corner, Camechis’ trainer, the iconic Sam Jones informed “The Golden Greek” he was going to shut it down.

“I come back to the corner and Sam said he was going to shut it down. He’s been in this game a long time. I knew that I didn’t have the arm strength to knock him out and I knew that was probably what it was going to take to win by that point,” said Camechis.

Jones said of the fight, “(Camechis) worked good early, he had some good rounds early. It was a good even fight. He got caught in the fifth round. That guy threw a left hook and that guy’s thumb hit him right in the eye. When he come to the corner, that eye was starting to swell shut.

“He went out in the next round and got caught on it again. Then he got caught with another shot and went down. But he was upset with me because I stopped the fight. Because that’s just a warrior’s mentality.”

Jones recalled Camechis trying to convince his coach to let the fight go.

“He said ‘We’ve got two more rounds, I might be able to catch him’ and he might. As long as you’re punching you’re dangerous but I’m not going to send someone out there that can’t see. Brian said ‘Well I can see out of my left eye’, I said ‘You can’t see out of your right one, I’m not sending you out there.’ “

Camechis talked of his opponent.

“I feel that I was outclassed, he had better style. Here’s a guy that that’s all he does. He trains, he just come out of a camp, been in camps in Vegas… you know, I don’t get them opportunities with that sparring. I get good training right here, the best I can get. It’s a matter of training. He trains all day everyday and I work all day and then try to do this in the afternoon.

“So I did what I could do. Hopefully I get the opportunity to fight the guy again. He had a great preparation for his fight game because he fought totally different than we’d ever seen him fight. He’s usually on his back foot skating and moving, I’m thinking I’m chasing him down the whole time and instead, I was on my back foot. So they out-gameplanned us really.”

Camechis said he would love a rematch for the title but that he was also grateful for the opportunity to fight in front of his home fans.

Most BoxRec readers probably expect the Columbus Dispatch and Columbus television media to report on a Columbus fighter winning the Ohio Welterweight Title. It is certainly a news worthy event.

Observing media boxing coverage over the years it seems obvious to me that the Columbus Dispatch and Columbus television and radio media are very anti-boxing. Most pro boxing shows that take place in Columbus are ignored by the local media.

The Ohio Athletic Commission is in error claiming Valerie DeFrietas and Stacey Rogers or Rodgers were making their pro debut. The previous record BoxRec had for Stacey Rogers was correct. She fought in Nevada two years ago. I sat two rows from her mother and grandmother in Glouster. I also spoke with Stacey Rogers and she told me she fought in Nevada two years ago. Also BoxRec is currently listing the fight as a six rounder. It was a 4 rounder.

Blue: You have two separate records for Stacey Rogers. One records in error calls her "Rodgers" and shows her fight against Valerie DeFrietas last Saturday. The other records calls her by her correct name Stacey Rogers and has her fight against Melissa Hernandez in Stateline, Nevada in 2006. These two records and two fights should been combined into one record listing both fights for Stacey Rogers, a female featherweight.

Thanks.
