Dear me, Andrew - there's no doubt that you're a very good writer. But this article is one of the most patronising pieces I've laid eyes on in a long time.
"Simply, a sizeable portion of boxing fans do not see why they should have to pay to watch their favourite sport...It isn’t purely because Khan’s assignment lacks the fizz of preceding PPV shows, its merely represents a new opportunity to bemoan the reality boxing is an industry and not free and on the NHS (National Health Service)...Why do boxing fans believe they should be insulated from the rules of the real world? When did they start expecting something for nothing?"
Those who subscribe to Sky Sports already DO pay to watch boxing. Don't they? Isn't this particular PPV a disgusting and undeserved premium? Shouldn't a bill of this kind be on 'normal' Sky sports?

All fuelling the buzz about the fight.
There is no such thing as bad publicity, who said that? Was it Stalin?

Re: Terry Dooley
It was deliberately so, Ian. I'm tired of all the blubbering about PPV. First, people rarely subscribe purely for the boxing, they get a whole host of other sports as part of the package, but even ignoring this, Sky subscribers know fine well when they take out their subscription that some fights will be PPV, in the same way that football season ticket holders know they're not covered for FA cup matches.Ian 'Mr' McNeilly wrote:http://boxingwriter.wordpress.com/2008/ ... pv-debate/Carbo wrote:I completely disagree, and have sent an article to Payne's blog arguing my point, but I loved it. Sky has a subscription movie package too, but if you want to see the biggest box office hits earliest, you need to pay extra in a PPV system. You're given a choice: watch early at a time of your convenience and pay for that privilege, or don't pay. It's similar to the choice boxing fans are given, but only boxing fans are crying about it.
Bottom line: people need to give up time and effort and often take risks to produce goods. They can sell that time and effort and risk for as much as the market can bear. If the product is rubbish or the price too much, nobody will buy and they will need to adjust their practices or go out of business. This is life in the free world. Live with it, or go live in Belarus and check out how wonderful native entertainment is in a country where the profit incentive doesn't exist.

Yes, speaking out against this particular PPV is akin to railing against the whole capitalist system. Don't you think you are making one or two leaps here?
However, I do agree with you to a certain extent. If you don't want it, don't buy it.
I won't buy it and I've just enjoyed reading Tris Dixon's blog entry which says he won't either.

Well its no different than what warren is doing with Khan is it??Oh, if you could see the irony in what you just said.
And he's got the cheek to say fighting are whoring themselves by signing with golden boy.
BTW you don't watch sky movies live, so its not like your going to know the result by missing it on Sky Box Office(unlike the khan fight)is it? So waiting for it on normal sky movies is no big deal at all and wont ruin your enjoyment one jot - Stupid analogy comparing sky box office movies to live sports box office.

PS Good article, though. :TU:
Good stuff Carbo. My take on the PPV situation is that it reminds me of one of my former housemates. His girlfriend would not go down on him at all, no matter how much he pleaded. So he started to offer her little bribes to do it. DVD here, outfit there, taxi fare home (yes, she needed SN on the case to show her how to sell herself properly). Eventually he was paying his own girlfriend for one of life's little pleasures. Something that one would assume came, pardon the pun, for free. He was having to pay extra for what every woman loves to do, to his own girlfriend as well, I would not do it myself but if a guy was going to a brass for it then fair enough. That to me is the same as PPV. Paying for what you should get automatically.
I cannot wait for the event to go on free TV as I want to see certain fighters on there, one of whom I will be writing about over the coming season, so I have to attend/buy the events. I would do anyway, in the forlorn hope that Sky show the full bill, after all we are paying for it. If it is 3 fights only and a load of flannel I will do what any red-blooded Englishman will do, I will sit in my house moaning, then buy the next 'event'.
So I am waiting in line to get raped. I hope they respect me in the morning. I'm not actually speaking out against PPV per se, as mentioned it is as relevant as not washing for two years then smashing windows in a town centre on a Bank Holiday Monday. I think we are all to blame as we are a bunch of mugs who will buy anything associated with boxing. Junkies laugh at boxing fans and say "There but for the grace of God...", we are a joke. I'd buy any old shite if it was live.
Chris s,
I pissed myself about how the line leading up to the "brass" reference ALMOST reads.

There is usually an ending to a thriller you wouldn't wish to know until you watched it yourself, otherwise movie makers wouldn't get in such a huff about leaked scripts and filming multiple endings to deceive fans? I think there is enough synergy between the two for the analogy to work.

Andrew you're missing the point old boy - like Ian says, we already pay for boxing on Sky.Carbo wrote: It was deliberately so, Ian. I'm tired of all the blubbering about PPV. I've never complained about PPV in the past, in fact I've just about paid for all of them. The only two I gave a miss were Hatton's last one and Tyson v some bum I can't recall.
Now I could just about understand those two - two big box office ex champs - fair enough, like you say, pay your money and take your choice.
Most of the other PPV I considered a relative bargain @ £15.
So it's not PPV I have an issue with - it's THIS PPV - and the ones to come if it's a success, god help us.
Take a look at boxing in Germany: big fights on free TV, and the game over there has never been better.

Chris s,
As for getting raped, if I went to buy a house, and the surveyor told me is was only worth half what the owner was asking, I wouldn't get much sympathy if I was disappointed after buying it at full price -- no matter how much hype the estate agent gave it. I've read your stuff, Terry; I know you know your Sugar Rays from your Sugar Shanes, so, as your own surveyor, if you ignore your own expert opinion, I'm not going to weep for your fifteen quid. In fact, for you,15 quid is a bargain. You’re a total junkie, and there’s no point denying that 15 quid is a cheap for a weekend fix.
Punchy Joe, you gloriously missed my point. What meant by irony was, Belarus is getting a bit of a rep for the quality of its hookers, which, if I'm to believe a couple of my mates who traveled there from Moscow, is true. Isn't it ironic that the only well known quality entertainment out of that country is the only entertainment with a proper profit incentivized private sector?

Re: Terry Dooley
I dont pay for Sky Sports and haven't since the pampered superstars my fees pay lost to Northern Ireland at football.
Setanta have offered value and commitment for their money and when complimented by the odd bit of Channel M, Nuts, ITV, ITV4 and Am action on BBC it fulfils my needs. If I desp wanted to see a SKY fight, I'd nip down the road and spend £12 on 4 pints and a bag of Beef and Onion and still have change for a bag 'o chips on the way home.
I know somewhere they get my money as some tiny proportion of my spend. But they fkked me off with the ludicrous spending on football.
If Setanta go the same way, I'll quit both and get everything on DVD from a trader.
I refuse to pay ponces like Frank Lampard's wages.

I thought you meant something like I was going to do to Belarus women what a certain TV station was doing to its subscribers(or something like that), and I should be ashamed or some such. lol
Guess that's just my guilty conscious ;)
Re: Terry Dooley
As MightyWarrior said "I don't have a problem with PPV - just this one". If the bill is worthy of PPV status then I have no problems paying for it, but putting a relative novice like Amir in against someone who nobody has heard of and who is unlikely to make a competitive fight out of it is a joke, I hope it's not a sign of things to come, but I think it could be.

Yeah, but it costs you three quid for a couple of hour's entertainment for SBO Movies, not fifteen!Carbo wrote:Sky has a subscription movie package too, but if you want to see the biggest box office hits earliest, you need to pay extra in a PPV system. Anyway, the point of contention is not PPV itself. I think it's safe to say we've all gotten used to it, and most of us will admit to buying most PPVs. It's this particular promotion being PPV that's the issue, not the general principle of PPV. Hatton-Mayweather is PPV, Khan-Prescott is not. Certainly not at the same price, anyway.

Re: Terry Dooley
Why don't you fork out for a 1 off payment of around £120 for a eurovox?
Then you will get the Khan PPV and every PPV event for free after that. My mates have got them and they get all the PPV footy, boxing etc without paying for them. In fact they can get EVERY channel for free.
Check out ebay if you want to read how they work and why the likes of SKY/HBO/SHOWTIME cant do anything about them - except hope that people don't cotton onto them.

Good read that Terry - I won't be paying for it though.
Really no point in my trying to express how shocking I think this is because loads of you have already done so.
I've never really wanted a British fighter to lose before and have nought against Khan but on this occassion to teach the greedy tossers (SN and SKY) a lesson I would absolutely love it if Prescott flattened him. Love it.
