I don't think there's much more a fighter can do. He beat top fighters from the Middleweight to Heavyweight divisions, beat great fighters like Walker, Loughran, Rosenbloom, and a lot of other good-great fighters, even managing a win over Tunney, beating Gibbons and Miske who were two of Dempsey's title challengers, he won the Middleweight title, defending it six times, and he did it blind in one eye for much of his career. I think Pep is probably close, but I would definitely side with Greb.

IMO Harry Greb is the greatest fighter who ever lived, followed by Sam Langford and Sugar Ray Robinson.

that post took my breath away. marciano not only
misses the top ten of all, he even misses the top
ten of the whites only.

at times people find it fancy to have a "different"
opinion. sometimes they cross that line. yet some
shoot themselves out of the solar system ...

The great Willie Pep was so DOMINANT that is very hard not to mention him as the greatest caucasian or white fighter of all time, pound per pound.

He won 63 in a row. Lost to a great fighter in Sammy Angott, at lightweight by all means, and then went 72 fights without losing from 1943 to 1948. When he fought the great Sandy Saddler, his record was an amazing 131-1-1 or something like that???...That is a lot of consistency. This guy got to be with the top 5 greatest fighters pound per pound of all time.

Pep also won 230 fights. More than any world boxing champion in history. And he ONLY LOST 11, which 8 of those loses were AFTER HE WAS 30 YEARS OLD!!!....UNBELIEVABLE!!!

The only thing why I do not consider him the greatest fighter of all time was because he seldom step up in class and challenge the great lightweights of his era: Ike Williams, Beau Jack, Willie Joyce, Bob Montgomery, Lew Jenkins, Enrique Bolanos and Juan Zurita. The ONLY ONE he faced that was very good at 135 was Angott. Maybe at 135lbs, he would have lost to those guys more than once.

white heavyweight, 64 2 0, had streak of 49 wins in a row
in the nineties. yet hardly anyone would put brian nielsen
into the hall of fame. finally it is about who you are facing.

i would have greb at least ahead of la motta. but
that is a reasonable list in my eyes.

Jack Dempsey
Gene Tunney
Harry Greb
Stanley Ketchel
Mickey Walker
Willie Pep

..hey devious....i was jotting down some names of guys that were better than marciano, but if i had checked in an read your post first it would have saved me the trouble...almost name for name..but i didn't have benny lynch.... i had jimmy mclarnin filling out my list.
now...i don't know if we will get into a discussion about what is nationality and what is race...but going by skin pigmentation roberto duran always looked white to me...and on that basis he easily belongs in there.

Jimmy Mclarnin could have gone on the list as a white fighter who is lb 4 lb better than Rocky, as could Ted Kid Lewis and Jack Britton. I should have included Benny Leonard definitely on the top 10 list, who is probably in the all time, all race top 10 lb 4 lb.
