Media Release

Post by FtmPress »

JOHN FEWKES turned down £40,000 to be Amir Khan’s opponent in Manchester on Saturday night.
Instead Britain’s TOP lightweight prospect, Fewkes will challenge Martin Gethin for the vacant English crown at Nottingham’s Harvey Hadden Leisure Centre on Friday.
Frank Maloney, promoter of the unbeaten Sheffield boxer spoke to John’s manager Glyn Rhodes and the pair decided it wasn’t the right time to face Khan.
Maloney and Rhodes both believe that Fewkes is a much better fighter than Khan and when the big rivals do eventually meet it will be one of British boxing’s biggest ever lightweight showdowns.
Maloney explained: “Yes, the money on offer is good, but nowhere near enough for a pay-per-view event where you are the star attraction.
“John is likely to be the next mandatory for British championship and when he wins that title, a clash against Amir will be worth six figures to him.”
There has been criticism aimed at Team Fewkes on various internet sites for turning down the Khan offer.
But angry Maloney snapped back: “A lot of these people on internet message boards are ill informed and anoraks hiding behind a computer.
“Boxing is all about timing, and now is not the time for John to be facing Khan for derisory money.
“I shouldn’t read the internet, but it is one of those things that you looks at because it is part of modern day life and made wannabes all experts.”
Friday’s 12 fight bill is topped by Leicester’s Rendall Munroe who makes the second defence of his European bantamweight title against French based Armenian Arsen Martirosian.

Clever viral message this.

Back to referring to message board contributors as anoraks - knowing it is an easy way to generate some heat and circulation of this release among these 'enthusiasts'.

Fewkes is an interesting prospect. I realy wanted to see that Murray fight.

Fewkes, Khan, Maloney and that old favourite "the anorak"

Maloney doesn't get it, does he? "I shouldn't read the internet". No Frank, you should. Just as all other British promoters should become a little better clued up on the workings of the 21st century. Perhaps then the sport wouldn't be stuck in the stoneage and a few younger kids would start to show an interest in boxing rather than the UFC and other sports out there. Yeah, Frank, keep avoiding the internet and the various opportunities it presents in this day and age. Good old boxing, eh? Spit and sawdust. Getting more and more archaic, one leisure centre at a time.

Please explain how can Fewkes be massively overweight when he is fighting at Championship fight on September 5th and has gone through the boards check weigh in's.

The only reason this fight was turned down was coz it was the wrong fight at the wrong time for a number of reasons.

For balance, Maloney is, I think, the only promoter I can recall posting on a forum with any regularity.

Smashed it to pieces, he was the no#2 in the UK before beating Earl if you recall.

Presumably, beating him and Gomez, two fresh faced young bangers, makes him top man in Europe - hence the need to look to Colombia for opponents.

I think promoters would need thier head examining if they started paying attention to the whinging old women, sorry i mean hardcore boxing fans that make up 99% of the internet crowd

If a promoter came on here he would get a very very distorted view of whats going on in British boxing

Ill keep saying it until someone can give me a good explanation

Hatton - Lazcano, 55,000 paid, but the old women on here considered it to be a joke fight

So why should any promoter care about what a few people, so far out of touch with the real world, think about boxing?

Sure, for his own benefit. To keep his name in the frame, so to speak. Aside from that, though, Maloney just crosses me as someone who'd rather the Internet didn't exist than have to actually go out there and embrace something new. Maybe I'm wrong. This isn't the 90s anymore. All the other top sports have caught up. Why hasn't boxing? It just irks me when boxing promoters act like the sport's going great guns and that changes aren't required. The UFC never had a Sugar Ray Robinson, a Muhammad Ali or a Joe Louis, yet look at their template. Look at the way they promote their stuff. The difference in quality is staggering.

Eraser.

Well of course it was directly or indirectly, for his own benefit. But he posted at DHB regularly back when that placed a pulse and less adverts.

Terry,

I'm wondering what you will say when PPV for a proper world title fight goes up to 20 quid.

I agree about Maloney shows.

As for the insight into post fight activities TD, you'll cross the line soon. Much like Connelly did when he joked about beheading that poor woman in Iraq. Its a cliff-edge, popularity, you know.

I agree wholly chemical Dooley. Oakey Francis was on time and everyone was kept busy with plenty of shows. Apart from the Daily Echo goon sat near me eating stinky oranges it was great. Plus some cracking undercard fights.

It was the best Soath Coast show ever in my view.

Connelly is a gem but I heard a bit of stand-up from a fella who was talking about buying a duvet. Its the most I've laughed in fkking ages.

Can't wait to read the Dokes' stuff, whereever it appears.

Its great that we get info from Frank now on Boxrec but I'm a little pissed that for years his own website and forum have lay somewhat dormant. I have sent many emails over the months to the web admin asking what was happening with the forum/website and could we expect to see some more info on there, other than click here to buy tickets. Never got a reply, and now we see Frank (or a Frankling) here posting their PR's.

I thought it was only small hall guys that had to use others forums etc for PR's, though at least I have the decency to replicate the info on my own website too. The same can't be said for Frank, (oh I see its on his site now too) but I do hope he sticks around and keeps us up to speed with all of his shows and the inside track on his boxers. (though I get the feeling we will get only the show details etc and the buy tickets here)

Frank says: "Unfortunately I may not agree with some of the so-called armchair experts on here, but the internet is part of every day life, and is a good medium for a promoter to get his message out, good or bad."
Anoraks and armchair experts, he is really trying hard to win us over,

What baffels me is why bring his PR's here to a well established boxing forum if we are supposed to be anoraks and armchair experts, who he has no time for ? Why not keep your PR's on your own website for those who wish to view them to go and read ? Ohhh yeah, theres nothing on Franks website and even when his forum did work he had about 12 members and they didnt seem to post much either.

Terry D wrote:It was Ken Bigley. Billy brought it up and said they should "Get on with it". He was trying to make a point about how the British media rub their hands with glee over stuff like this and then feign horror/disgust/the moral high ground, he just did it in a arsed up way. Plus how we secretly love all that type of stuff. A year later they had a greatest stand ups countdown and he was pushed into the nether regions of the top ten, with people admitting that this was the reason they did this, the jealous bastards.

Billy is top, the man, the only comedian who actually draws on new material.
I was there, believe it or not. he said "You have to admit that when you get up in the morning you switch on the TV to see if they've beheaded that bigley yet, because every f*** day its the same crap" - in reality there was a mumured laugh, but I didnt see anyone walk out in disgust or heckle like the papers reported...

He's awesome. Missed his last tour of the UK, gutted,
