Not a good night for the Ingles...Jon Thaxton quits
What a nightmare few days for the Ingles. Their light-welters, Junior Witter, Gavin Down and Oscar Hall, have jumped on a crazy merry-go-round to nowhere - and now another of their light-welters, Jon Thaxton, has called it quits.
Thaxton has been fighting a losing battle with a shoulder injury sustained in a car crash just days after his last fight in September 2002.
"I'm 29-years-old," he said today. "It's a young man's sport and it's time to hang up my gloves.
"I'm gutted, upset, but I've been through the depression stage.
"I've been trying my hardest to get back into the ring, but it's not to be.
I've done my best. I've won well and I've lost well - and I've never ducked anyone. That I am very proud of. Whenever I stepped into that boxing ring, I always had the opinion I would win - I didn't care who I was fighting."
Thaxton, it can be argued, gave Ricky Hatton his toughest fight.

After Paul "Scrap Iron" Ryan had blasted out Ross Hale inside a round for British and light-welterweight titles in 1995, somebody in his wisdom quickly decided to match Ryan with Thaxton to cash in on Ryan's stunning title victory.
It was a non-title bout, but, even back then, Thaxton was regarded as rock-solid. I can still recall Harry Mullan turning to me and stating: "Thaxton will knock him out!"
Thaxton nearly took Ryan's head off with a left hook and won in the first.

Shame Thaxton's injury never allowed him to come back.
I rememeber the night he first sprung an upset, when drafted in to fight Jimmy Tibbs' son Mark. At the time Thaxton was I think a four fight novice and unknown.
Tibbs was being built up and Thaxton was supposed to be an easy nights work.
When Thaxton got into the ring and de-robbed he revealed his Bristish and European Kickboxing title belts around his waist. I think at this point Tibbs may have realised that his boy would be up against it.
Jon went onto beat Tibbs and establish himself as a quality domestic performer.

Poor Old Thaxton was very unlucky.......
should have beaten both Hatton and Rowlands but the referees went against him.....
Hatton should have been stopped no doubt, he was pissing blood for 11 and 3/4 rounds.....
Then Thaxton was bashing Rowlands up and got stopped on a cut which whilst bad wasnt in a career threating place....

It was in fact Dean Hollington who Thaxton took apart that night. Was he trained by Tibbs? Maybe thats how I became confused.
