I have a CNA saying Cowler KO-1 Jack Brennan @ Philly Nov. 8 (not 4, as recorded here), 1918. Venue: National A.C.; Referee: Pop O'Brien. (Edit: Oh, and the time of the KO was 1:40.)

Also on card: Lew Tendler W-6 Frankie Callahan.

Article reads that these were the first bouts held after the venue had been closed for many weeks during the Spanish Influenza ban that had closed boxing venues throughout North American at the end of World War I.

Gee -- I had Nov 2 for Tendler anmd Nov 4 for Cowler.

But, I'd go with a newspaper article.

By the way, rather than just "CNA" could we get a cite -- ie NY Times 9 Nov 1918

It helps when evaluating the quality of the report. for example, if the report is from May 1919, I wouldnt necessarily use it to correct a date from Nov 1918

Sure, Mike. For this one, it was the November 9, 1918 SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER, which we call the SEATTLE P-I up here in the Northwest. I got it from microfilm last Sunday at the University of Washington's Suzzallo Library. (I found that the PI had better boxing coverage during the teens than THE SEATTLE TIMES).

When I refer to a "CNA," you can bet that 99% percent of the time I am referring to a newspaper account that was published the day after the bout(s). If it is more than a day beyond, I will specify that in my message.

As you can see, I have gone back to 1918. I plan to work my way up to 1924, then continue on from Feb. 1929 to 1940 (or whenever I grow tired).

And, Mike. Just to make sure - when I go back to that library in another week or two, I will double-check to make sure I didn't goof somewhere along the way. I took notes, I didn't make prints.

Prints there cost a dime each, and it's a hassle using their reader/printer machines. I prefer other machines they have where the image is projected onto this drafting table - it's so much easier to read that really old, poor-quality stuff in that manner. (I'm sure Robin and Colin know what I mean.)

Later edit: Mike, my notes indicate that the Jack Dempsey-Levinsky & the Johnny Dundee-Gussie Lewis bouts were held @ Philly Nov. 6 (the venue I did not record). If these two were also held at the National A.C., then these would all appear to be the same card. But I distinctly recorded the Cowler and Tendler bouts as being Nov. 8 at the National. Again, I will confirm later before making any changes.
