Question

This might sound like a strange question, but does anybody know the name of a Welsh Lightweight from the 1920'-30s, who was once supposed to have knocked out a heavyweight?

Jeff Fenech got arrested for knocking out a club bouncer.
Fenech was fighting superfeather at the time and the bouncer was I should imagine the Obligatory 15stone plus, this would cover your story somewhat.

Naseem Hamed once got the hump with Adam Fogarty in sparring and bust his nose. Fogarty was a heavyweight, and also represented Great Britain at rugby league. But Naseem has freakish power.

Was this one of Ingles stories he told when he was building Naz up?
Also was Fogarty allowed to take a shot back?
I read Ingle only allowed body sparring, no head shots.

No, it was in Gavin Evans' book on Naz. Johnny Nelson watched the spar and recounted it to Evans. If my memory serves me correctly, Naz and Ingle's relationship was already deteriorating and Naz went into the ring immediately after he had cruelly goaded Brendan over an incident at a show where Mickey Duff had shouted at Brendan. Naz had been saying things like: "How could you let him speak to you like that, etc, etc," then went into the ring and bust Fogarty's nose with Brendan watching.
Small wonder there's a lot of bitterness.

Am I correct in saying Brendan Ingle only allowed body sparring?
There is no doubting Hamed `s punching ability at 9stone, and the nose is one of the (if not THE) easiest things to break, most boxers I would put money on have it broken long before they go pro, so it may well be true, BUT I am sure if Fogarty himself had taken a cheap shot on Hamed them Naz would have had a little more than a broken nose.
Thinking of it now didn’t Johnny Nelson injure Hamed when one of his shots strayed a little high some years ago?

I'm not sure. My Dad was talking to one of my Grandad's old mates, and on the subject of boxing, asked about the afore mentioned lightweight. He would have fought around the 1930s when my Grandad and his mates were still kids.

The Welsh lightweight champ in that era was a guy named Gordon Cook.

I've also heard that, and seeing how several of his fighters keep their hands low (Hamed, Witter, Rhodes), I wouldn't be surprised.

Nice one Bennie, I'll see if that rings any bells.
