Just a bit Randy, ol' rog thinking that I was around back in the Langford/ Willis day was funny, I showed it to Connie and she says, "you see, I'm not the only one who thinks you're old, even your friends think so"
Well Frank, I still remember when you were young, which of course means that I'm really getting old, huh? I got a pic somewhere of you, Larry Soto, Johnny Flores and Jake Horn all leaning over a table, going thru papers, making matches for a Jr. Gloves event that was about to take place. By the way Frank, Do you remember in the mid-60's when Sammy Saunders was promoting amateur bouts at a place called "Victoria Hall", over on Pico Bl. I remember a pretty hot amateur at the time that Bill Slayton was training, Danny Alameda. Alameda was whipping most put in front of him, but he couldn't get past Petey Vital Jr., who beat twice via close decisions at El Monte Legion. Vital still lives out in your neck of the woods, and we were on the same Golden gloves and AAU teams that went to the Nationals. Sadly, Pete's career was cut short after he fought Ray Lampkin. He had an industrial accident at work, and lost a hand. We have a mutual friend who owns a radiator repair shop in El Monte, and he says Pete's still around. I might look him up?

Frank, Dagos & Randy . . .

Yesterday I got the tickets for our WBHOF tables. I'll be putting them in the mail today so you can expect them in a few days. Let me know when you get them. I have addresses for Roger, & Randy, but Frank I need you to E-mail me your mailing address.

Looks like it will be a lot of fun and, I almost forgot, Mando Muniz is really interested in our thread, he and I are pretty close and I told him what we are doing here. He WILL drop in and join in the talk. This is a guy who challenged four times for the welter title, fought Napoles and Palomino twice each, Griffith, Adolf Pruitt, Eddie PErkins, and on and on. I know all the L.A. guys are familiar with Mando, but for you guys who don't know him, he is a great guy, and today coaches wrestling in high school, as well as runs a bail bond business, a real estate broker. I'll talk to Mando later and give him a nudge, if necessary.

They painted over the mural of Bert Colima? They could have put that in Boyle Heights. They have engineers can move stuff like that. That was art, history, and memories all rolled into one. You can never get that back. Rick,i've got thoughts on guys like"Needleman". He'd sell us all out to make a buck. When we get to the Hall of Fame Banquet ,I'll let my hair down on guys like him.The mural of Bert Colima? Good thing that bastard Needleman doesn't own the shurch in Milan where "The Last Supper" is hanging. Imagine getting out the paint rollers ? But let's face it,the bastard could still charge admission to see "The Last Supper" and make a bundle. The thing is,he probaly thinks it's ugly.

During the time I was trained by Mel Epstein, the name "Dave Shade" would come up often. Mel would tell me that Dave Shade an "educated left hand", he could jab in a variety of ways and had a tricky way of turning it into a hook or uppercut. I've heard Mike Tyson say "Dave Shade was Cus D'Amatos favorite fighter."

Tony Daly, 74; sports doctor for famous athletes, including Clippers and Olympians

In 1984, Tony Daly was the medical director for the L.A. Olympic Organizing Committee. That same year, he became the team doctor for the Clippers.
Bill Dwyre

September 7, 2008

Tony Daly, a doctor for sports stars who became one in his own right because of this work, died Friday at his home in Beverly Hills after a six-year battle with prostate cancer. He was 74.

At the time of his death, Daly was director of sports medicine at the Diagnostic and Interventional Sports Care and Orthopedics center in Marina del Rey. He had been the Clippers' team doctor since the NBA franchise moved to Los Angeles in 1984.

"Tony's accomplishments in his profession have been many; his contributions to the Clippers endless," team owner Donald T. Sterling said in a statement Saturday. "First and foremost, though, the way his unique personality lifted everyone he met is what will be most remembered and most missed."

As an orthopedic surgeon, Daly held local and international sports medicine positions. He was the team doctor for USA Hockey in 1980, when the famous "Miracle on Ice" victory in Lake Placid, N.Y., over the Soviets punctuated the U.S. team's march to a gold medal.

"There were at least a half-dozen of those players who might not have played," said Peter Ueberroth, a longtime friend of Daly's and chairman of the United States Olympic Committee's Board of Directors. "But Tony got them on the ice."

Daly recently recalled that at the end of that hockey game against the Soviets, with the U.S. protecting a lead, "those last seven minutes were the longest of my life."

Anthony Francis Daly Jr. was born in 1933 in New Brunswick, N.J. He graduated from Rutgers University and Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia and spent time as a military doctor before moving west and becoming a pioneer in sports medicine.

Among his positions in sports, Daly was a member of the International Olympic Committee's medical staff at the Sarajevo Winter Games in 1984; was team doctor for USA Basketball for the Summer Olympics in Montreal in 1976 and Athens in 2004; was medical director for the international soccer federation (FIFA) at the World Cup in 1994 in Los Angeles; and was medical director for the L.A. Olympic Organizing Committee for the 1984 Games.

"He was one of the pillars of the '84 Olympics," said Ueberroth, who ran those Games as president of the L.A. Olympic Organizing Committee.

Ernie Vandeweghe, former NBA player, former Laker doctor, and longtime medical associate of Daly's, said, "Athletes shy away from doctors. Not from Tony. When he worked on you, you were his friend for life."

Daly treated athletes in all sports. He worked with boxers George Foreman, Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr., to name just a few. He performed numerous operations on NBA star Bill Walton's injured foot, being called to that duty when a contentious court case over the injury sought to identify a doctor suitable to both sides and Daly's name was the only one on both lists.

Daly reached track star Mary Decker within seconds of her dramatic fall during the 3,000-meter race in the Coliseum in the '84 Olympics and directed her treatment. He also worked recently with U.S. Olympic swim star Dara Torres.

"I talked to him from Beijing," Ueberroth said. "He asked me to wish [Torres] well, but to not tell her he was close to death. He didn't want to take her focus away from her events."

Daly was married three times and had six children. They, along with his third wife, Carla, survive him.

Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Beverly Hills, with burial at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills.

Donations in Daly's name may be made to the Concern Foundation, 8383 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 337, Beverly Hills, CA, 90211. For more information, call (323) 852-9844.

It use to be that way, Randy, 40-50 years ago, but no more, back then top ten fighters would each other all the time, so a lost really didn't mean anything, now days fighters are built up by fighting nobodys-hasbeens-neverwas, so the first time they lose, they not only lose the fight but also lose heart, and they are never the same.
Hey Frank
Didn't Langford and Wills fight each other 22 times? Some fighters don't have 22 fights.
Hell, I don't know, I wasn't around back then, I'm old, but not that old, maybe Don Fraser would know....
I don't know about that. There is a guy that looks a lot like Frank at ringside in a photo I've got of the 1908 Papke-Ketchel bout in Vernon.

All kidding aside, Langford fought Wills 23 times (Wills won 6, Langford 2 and the rest were no decision).

Yesterday, Jeri and I went to the 2008 Greek Festival in Los Angeles at Saint Sophia Cathedral on Normandie Avenue in Los Angeles. That’s where I was headed when we passed by the Olympic Auditorium. It was supposed to be a really big event, lot’s of good Greek food (which I love), entertainment and Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson were the guest host. Their website made it sound like it was a really big to do. I was really looking forward to it. I had small breakfast so I would be at my full eating capacity when we got there.

I needn’t have bothered. I can’t remember when I have been so disappointed. It was so small that within five minutes we had made a complete circle and seen everything, which wasn’t much, let me tell you. It cost five bucks a piece, which I thought was a bargain, until I actually went inside. It was a small commercial rip off with nothing to do or see. There were several eating booths and I thought, “well at least we’ll get some good Greek food.” We walked around a bit and decided to get some lamb, with rice, feta cheese, olives, small tomatoes and Dolmades (stuffed grape leaves). The plates were $13.50 a piece., but I thought “what the heck, at least I’m getting some real Greek food“. I mean, if not at a Greek festival being held at a Greek cathedral, then where. Right?

I should have eaten at McDonalds because if this wasn’t the worst meal I’ve ever eaten it was at least, in the top five. The lamb, was cooked and that was it. Nothing Greek about it. just cooked, overcooked in fact, dried, tasteless lamb. The rice was tolerable, the Feta cheese was decent, but barely the size of a small pinky. The olives thankfully were from a jar and were the only good thing on the plate but hardly worth the money we paid. I paid $27.00 dollars for the privilege of eating junk. The sodas were $2.00 a can. I was trying to make the best of it but once we were done there was nothing to do. We already covered that in the first five minutes. We passed by a Greek pastry booth and got some baklava and cookies. Those were just okay or maybe by that time I was just soured on the whole experience. They did have some dancers there but the way everything was laid out, you couldn’t really see the dancers unless you were right up front. Tom Hanks and his wife Rita stood up, said a few words and thanked everyone for having them there. Poor Tom and Rita, at least Jeri and I were able to leave immediately, they had to stick around for three days and keep a smile on their face. That’s why they get paid the big bucks.

We were going to go home but I told Jeri let’s just take the 10 west and see what’s ahead today. The kids are grown up now but we still have the habit of rushing home as if the kids are waiting for us. They aren’t. We ended up at the Santa Monica Pier for awhile. We were going to eat at Bubba Gump’s on the pier but the food looked so commercial and I had already wasted money on junk earlier in the day at the festival. I was on a mission to get something good to eat.

As we were walking around I was craving an ice cold beer. Then It hit me. The Venice Whaler is just down the road in Venice. The Whaler was recommended to me by my friend Brian from Detroit. He was in town a while back visiting his cousin and stopped there for some beer and food. I had no idea where in Venice it was but somehow I found it. We weren’t disappointed. I parked the truck and we walked over to the Whaler. It’s two story building, a bar and restaurant. We headed upstairs first and it was really crowded with locals having a good time, watching a game on one of the televisions. The bar was packed and there were no tables so we went back downstairs. It was little quieter than upstairs but still filled with lots of people. A game was on the television and everyone seemed to be having a good time. Jeri got a Miller Lite and I had Sam Adam’s. They were ice cold and went down real good. We settled on the Fish and Chips. They were good. What really made it nice, was our table was right next to a big open window, more like French Doors really, so we were practically eating Al Fresco. The beach was just across the walkway. We took a walk on the pier and around the area. I made a mental note of several restaurants, including an excellent Italian Trattoria that we had eaten at years ago, a Mediterranean restaurant, a Mexican restaurant and several small cafes.

It was late by the time we left for home. I was a little unfamiliar with the area since it had been years since I had been to Venice. I found the freeway on ramp but it was closed. It took me a while to find an on ramp. In fact, I was sort of lost and just could not find an off ramp, and I’m not the kind of guy to ask anyone either. I could almost here Rod Serling in the back seat saying to someone, anyone “ A couple; one idiot and his wife, in search of good Greek food and a good meal have instead found themselves searching for an eternity for an on ramp,.. to the Twilight Zone. My wife thought she heard something too. Eventually, I found an on ramp and headed home. The Greek Festival was a joke and dud but all in all it was good day.

Your right Randy.
Ya know, a couple years ago my family and i took a long drive through the midwest.
Through small towns mostly. It was disturbing to me that every town was completely strip malled.
When we would pull into the town, it was almost the same order of fast food dumps from begining to end .
So, its happening in parts of rural America too.

You think right. Take a look at that picture Frank posted for me of Lazaro Cardenas' house. No way they'd tear that down. Or anything in that town. Everytime I see a Starbucks,I want to puke. Check this out. They're building a Taco Bell in Tijuana. That has to be for what's leftover for the tourists.

Gee honey, let's go to Tijuana and eat at Taco Bell. That's why I can't stand Cabo,Can Cun,or any other tourist trap or American Colony in Mexico. They have to have their Starbucks and McDonalds. Screw that.

As far as Coney Island goes,I hope when they rebuild it with spas and boutiques,a Tsunami will pay the place a visit.

I'm tellin' ya' like I said before. Things are geared up for the young folk. They have no sense of history. Give them play stations, malls, and stupid TV programs. The media has underminded us older folks. When we're gone,it's over. We'll get together in the "After Life" and all the stuff they've torn down will be up there with us. That's why they call it heaven.

Hey Pug
When this thread moves up to that happy place in the sky, where should we go first,The Olympic Auditorium,Penn Station,Yankee Stadium? You can make the selection. There's a long list, but it's a good one.
