Dunne probably gets such a big following for an average fighter because the Irish boxing scene is pretty poor at the moment you have to admit, you don't really have any top 20 world ranked fighters at the moment do you ? Dunne has fought only 2 decent fighters Pickering who he could only beat on points and Kiko who knocked him out Prescott style in round 1.
Dunne is no doubt a bigger puncher than Munroe but i think Munroe would have the measure of him around round 4,5 then out box him comfortably for an unanimous points victory whether it be in England or Ireland.
It doesn't matter why he gets the coverage he does(although the reason is actually because it's on the main terrestrial channel and not some subscription satellite channel), the fact of the matter is he does get it and hence him fighting at home is much more finnancially rewarding than fighting anywhere else in the World.

Dunne is either in or just outside the top 20 with all the independent rankings(IBO computerised rankings, boxrec, Fightnews).

John Duddy for all his flaws is definitely a top 20 fighter at either Middleweight or Light-Middleweight, wherever you want to place him.

Then there's prospect such as Andy Lee, Paul McCloskey, Andrew Murray, Paulie Hyland Matthew Macklin's probably above prospect level now, still have the odd older guy such as Brian Magee. It's not like there's a huge shortage of Irish fighters out there.

All Irish fighters that fight on RTÉ are popular as Ireland loves its boxing, Dunne gets higher viewing figures than Lee, Duddy, Macklin and McCloskey because he's been fighting on RTÉ much longer than them.

Munroe might be able to outbox Dunne, but I he'd have to improve hugely from that last performance which has to be said was dreadful for a European champion.

You might say Dunne has only faced two decent fighters and Munroe has faced one, but barring Martinez Munroe hasn't fought guys to the level of Adrian Valdez and Yuri Voronin.

Ears are you seriously telling me aside probably Duddy who i thought was from Northern Ireland and (erratic), and Dunne the other fighters you mentioned are top quality.

Duddy is Northern Irish, but has solely an Irish passport and views himself as just Irish, even if he didn't, fighters such as Wayne McCullough and Neil Sinclair are loved on the whole island of Ireland despite coming from what would be considered 'Unionist' backgrounds. Boxing on the island of Ireland transcends any divides, we're all in it together.

Lee could definitely go on to be better than both of them, Macklin's probably as good as Duddy, McCloskey and Murray could very well go on to be as good as Dunne. Paulie Hyland I reckon will make it to European level aswell.

Brian Magee will never be World level but will be fighting for the Commonwealth title at Super-Middleweight soon and should dominate the British title scene now that Froch has moved to World level. Let's not forget that Brian Magee was robbed of the Europeean Super-Middleweight title against Vitali Tsypko.

Lee and Duddy are probably the only two listed there who could pick up a World title in the future but it's strenght in depth Ireland has at the moment rather than a McGuigan or a Collins. There are plenty of other fighters Ireland has at the moment such as Stephen Haughian, James Moore, Dean Byrne but since I'm unsure of their ability to make it at European title level I didn't list them.

Dunne is not the stand out star of Irish boxing anymore except in terms of fanbase, where he will probably be surpassed by Lee in the future.
We've kind of got sidetracked here but the point I'm making is Dunne has the support he does not because of a lack of other quality Irish fighters but because his last 13 fights have been shown on the main terrestrial channel in Ireland, 12 of those at Prime Time and in 11 of those he was headlining the event.

The point I was making early was that Dunne has that following, not why he has it(which is irrelevant) and that because of this following a Munroe-Dunne fight in Ireland would make much more money. Dunne received a 6 figure purse for the Martinez fight for god sake. In a European Super-Bantamweight title fight !!!, that's just unheard of.

Ok big ears i agree with you then that the fight would generate more £'s in Ireland than England, but Munroe doesn't really need Dunne like he needs Munroe. In my local paper which is where Munroe is from it says they will more than likely get it on whether it be in England or Ireland.

I agree, Munroe is in the position of power and in truth doesn't really need Dunne.
It's why I'd like to see Dunne take the fight even if the money is poor and it's in England
The only reason I wouldn't like Dunne to fight is if Maloney wants options on several fights should Dunne win, a rematch would be reasonable but anything more than that wouldn't be acceptable.

I'm guessing it would take a very large over for the fight to happen in Ireland and it would take a pretty big offer for it to happen in England aswell.
Let's just hope someone stumps up with the cash otherwise we're going to miss out on a very intriguing contest and a match that is probably between Europe's two best Super-Bantamweights.

yeah let's hope it happens.

surely the kings hall would be the only place it would happen.

dunne sells the tickets.

i don't see dunne coming to england for it under any circumstances.

Kings Hall would be a poor place to hold it, the Point Depot reopens in December with an improved capacity of 14,000(previously just over 8,000). It's gonna be renamed the 02 Arena or whatever but that's irrelevant, this is the same Dublin venue which has hosted all of Dunne's previous European title fights which have all sold out. The Kings Hall only holds 5,000 and is too far from Dublin where Dunne draws the majority of his fans from. They'd fill the venue no problem but it just would be a waste when you could put it somewhere bigger.

If they really wanted the fight in November they could use the RDS(also in Dublin) which has an indoor arena which holds 7,000 or the Rugby pitch which holds 18,250, although some of that is standing but with the pitch area converted to seats they could put any capacity between 8,000-15,000 really.

One thing I want to mention aswell is that when I was mentioning Ireland's best prospects I as usual left out Martin Lindsay. He looks a very good fighter and I fancy him to get the better of Derry Matthews.

Anyway I think Dunne would win this by UD
