OT - Sat Navs

I've resisted getting one of these things as I wouldn't need to use it that often. But because of roadworks, shite signage and a lack of concentration I missed my motorway exit going to the Munroe fight on Friday.

For some reason, I always get lost in Nottingham. Same with the Arena. Plus, it was bucketing down afterwards, pitch black and I turned onto a huge main road...got up to about 38 and got snapped by a camera - couldn't believe it was only 30 - I could hardly see the tiny signs.

In short - is it worth getting one? (Maps have always been fine for me but I was p'd off.)

If so, any recommendations? Thanks.

Sat navs when working are extremely accurate and useful BUT like any device they aren't to be relied on.
Even the ones I used in the army which cost thousands are known to be tempermental (one told me I was in the middle of Kabul when I was actually 300 miles away from there).

Get a Garmin.

If it goes wrong they replace it with out quibble. Get one of the others and it gets sent away.

Garmin is good for cameras too.

I had a Tom-Tom for 3 years, signal was shyte in comparison.

It has a nice trip manager thingy too.

Records your top speed, average speed, how long you were stood still stuff like that. Helps wile away the hours.

I've got 118 as my highest speed thus far.

Not big and not clever. But irresistable.

Need to find a bigger hill to push the bus down.

I've got a Tom Tom XL (much bigger screen) and it works fine for me, but, as Dave says, the signal doesn't activate for a few minutes so if you don't know where to go at the start you're fooked. And they're over-priced like iPods for the technology.

My Missus has got a Sony one and it's bloody awful. It's not inuitive at all and doesn't have POI.

I started with a Navigon, which has POI but it didn't work that well so I gave it to Dirk. It screwed up on our way to Haye v Enzo, too.

Halfords did have up to 50% of Sat Navs a few weeks ago. Maybe they still have.

I got a garmin, spot on, especially to get to tiddly leisure centres in altingham and wigan for shows.

Yeah, get a Garmin.

I got one from Halfords the other week (as I too got lost one time too many recently and had to put my macho map reading penchant to one side). Cost about £80 and is spot on.

Apparently the nice men at Garmin drive all their routes rather than purely use satelite data

My £10 Navigon is brilliant. Emerson couldn't get it to work but it took my 10 seconds to fix and two trips to work out why you had to reset it everytime and then resolve.

True the screen did pixellate on the way to Haye vs. Macca more to do with the car being hot and affecting the screen than anything. The instructions still worked and got us there.

I love it but don't know what POI is???

Anyway back to topic my old man swears by Navman's, he's a cab driver and finds this the most reliable. And believe me he's had every brand of Sat Nav going as he has a tendency to leave them in full view in his parked taxi and always gets robbed! He's on his 4th and showing no signs of learnign from past mistakes.

My Tomtom has always done me proud. Simple, uncluttered interface and solid performance.

Although I am really crap at directions..... only once has she taken me the wrong way - and that was in the middle of knowhere.

I was on the motorway and I was diverted off because of roadworks. There were diversion signs for half a mile then nothing. Had my sat nav on and followed instructions. I was taken through a housing estate then a industrial estate, followed by a country lane that took me onto a main road. Then bingo signs for the motorway. I was soon on my way home again. It got me out of a fix that night but quite honestly I dont use it that much. Its as well to take it when you are on a long journey, who knows what will happen. If the police close a road you could be fucked finding your way. They do come in handy sometimes so I am glad I bought one. Signal on mine is shit, its fine once its locks on to the satellites but you have to be patient and wait. Packard Bell perhaps not the best but cheap and reliable.
