Seem to remember Glenn was BN prospect of the year about a 100 years ago, then got blasted out early in a fight he was meant to win, but came back to eventualy win a world title. That must to be where he's coming from.

Obviously Khan's chin aint great, but the way he hung it out for Prescottt's piledrivers was just madness. I'll be amazed if they keep the Cuban trainer, no matter what Khan says right now.
He seems the kiss of death and don't reckon he'll be coming back from Miami somehow...

Box Office Flop!!

Post by dapug »

People can make all the excuses they want for Khan’s box office flop but the stark reality is you cannot put muscles on a chin and his physical make up is not designed to take blows to the head, he has a long neck and cannot absorb any kind of punch.

No one is saying he is not talented but for those who know their boxing history this is another case of Vernon Solis and Errol Christie; both of these guys were former amateur stars with massive publicity when they signed on the dotted and they were the days when amateur boxing was boxing.

allegedly, the master that he is, may be able to resurrect Khan but the excitement and frenzy will be no more and whatever Team Khan try to thread us and say what they like, the reality is the chin is crystal and no miracle worker can rebuild it.

Sollas had a stamina problem. He would run out of gas and THEN get stopped.
He was out of the game at 23.

Christie had too many fights as an amateur. The Kaylor war just 'finished' him at the age of 22. He wasn't so much chinny as 'shot'.

As for Khan, he took his defeat like a pro. Now his career gets interesting.

Amir Kahn: Where does he stand today?

Post by Crease »

Okay guys, please forgive me if you have already discussed this topic (I'm willing to bet that you have) and if you are sick of dicussing this.... Why did you come on to this thread, man?

-This is my 1st time on BOXREC since his fight against Precott last weekend, and here's my thought on the matter.

OKAY, Kahn faced a realtive unknown in Breidis Prescott and he lost... And not only that, he lost in an extremely bad way - the loss was somewhat destrutive...

What does this do for his world title hopes? Well, it basically it leaves his "world champion" dream in tatters at the moment. The easy way out for Kahn would be to immediately accept any fight offer against a not-so-classy boxer and win that fight conclusively... However, in my opinion - to many boxing pundits, that would be preditable and irrelevant, because immediately the quality of the opponent will be brought into question...

Throughout his whole career Kahn has wroked at sliencing his critics. He has always enjoyed the television spotlight and the Birtish medias frenzy surrounding him as Birtain's next "big hope" etc...
In the past, the questions asked of him, where who he would fight, where the fight would take place, and how long before the big title fight would happen...

Warren has always delayed Kahn's progress to the top, after each victory, the old "there are still some kicks to be worked out" talk was said....

But the question now is, HAS AMIR KAHN GOT WHAT IT TAKES TO GO TO THE TOP?

The Kahn supporters will say that I am "over-exhaggerating" and that Amir might have merely had an "off-day"... But I will reaply to them by saying that the great boxers cannot afford an "off-day"...
Rocky Marciano NEVER had an "off-day".
Muhammad Ali had very few "off-days" (especyally when you exclude the Holmes and Berbick fights, from which he was unrecongnisable from his olf self).

Then if you look closer to home - people of the same island as him:
Joe Calzaghe has NEVER had an "off-day" the way that Kahn has.
Hatton has NEVER had an "off-day"... - People might say that Myweather was a big off-day for Hatton... But I would respond by commeting on the referee.
I am not using this as a excuse for the loss, but merely as my opinion backed up with comclusive fact...
The referee DID continue breaking Hatton and Mayweather up, thus preventing Hatton from admisntering his destrutive close-range Rib-smashers..... This cannot be disputed.

Personally, upon looking at last weekends fight, I would call Kahn's ability to get ot the very top into question. When I say this, I am not commenting on Kahn's physciality - every time I seen Kahn he looks exceptionally well-conditioned... However I would like to dicuss his mental toughness.
Think of it: Could Amir Kahn suffer prolonged pressure from a hard-hitter... He certainly couldn't last weekend (brief though the fight was) nor could he avoid the not-so-powerful fists of Willie Limond.

As of this moment, I reamin unconvicned that Amir Kahn could take a beating for a stronger boxer who can actually keep up with him and continue closing him down in the ring...
I think that mentally he would crumble and the fight would be taken out of him. Yes, he could be flashy. Yes, he could use his jab and spped to good effect.... But if his opponent could keep up with him and thud Kahn with heavy punches, I'm not convicned that kahn could stay on his feet and last the fight.

My apologies if this thread has upset anyone, that was not my intention. But I do strongly believe that these things needed to be said.
And lastly, the reason I have put this thread is not just because Khan has had his 1st loss, it's the way he was defeated - and exited the ring a broken man.

Crease - You make some good points. I would say, though, that all fighters have their "off" days, but the great ones still find a way to win.

ISouthpaw - I don't think the final PPV figures will be in for about a month.

Still for sale and a snip at £100,000...should be able to make that back off Khan sanctioning fees.

Listed as having one employee, not confirmed if that is Mickey Vann or not :D .
http://www.daltonsbusiness.com/sports-c ... -uk/168287

Seriously though, this board should club together and buy the WBU...along the lines of http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/footbal ... 089473.stm
:box: (edit only £11.22 per member)
I'd be up for that - maybe someone should start an official campaign
:TU: Not sure that it would work with the WBU because thankfully it appears to be no longer recognised with the TV companies.

However some sort of syndicate supporting an up a coming boxer might be good. Maybe putting in a few quid to support training costs etc in return for cheap fight tickets and a share of prize money??? There was a racing driver that did a similar thing on Dragons Den recently.

Amir Kahn: Where does he go from here?

Post by Crease »

This thread is dedicated to my thoughts on the young Amir Kahn and where he should go from here.

My apologies if you are sick of discussing this topic (I'm willing to bet that you have discussed it before)... And if you don't wnat to discuss it, why come on this thread, man?

FIRST OFF, Amir Kahn has suffered his 1st career loss... He will slip down the rankings and a big blemish will be put on his record... But the thing that should concern Amir's supporters, is not the fact that he lost, but the way in which he lost... It was a catastrophic way to lose to a relative unkown... And this should seriously raise question marks about Khan.

Now, Kahn's supporters will say that I am "over-reacting" and that Kahn merely had an "off-day"... But I would reply be saying that is nonsence, and that all the great fighters could not afford to have "off-days".
Just look at:
Rocky Marciano: (He never had an "off-day").
Muhammad Ali: (Ali didn't have many "off-days", especially when you exclude his fights against Holmes and Berbick, which was when he was a pale shadow of his former greatness).

Then when you look closer to home:
Joe Calzaghe: (Big Joe has NEVER had an "off day" the way that Kahn already has).
Ricky Hatton: (Hatton's NEVER had an "off-day"***).
Carl Froch: (Froch has NEVER had an "off-day").

*** Unless you count his fight against Mayweather... And even then, the decision-making of the referee MUST be called into question. I am not using the referee as an excuse for his loss, it is merely my opinion backed up in conclusive fact; The referee DID keep breaking Hatton and Mayweather up, preventing Ricky from getting into his IN-FIGHTING game, and stopped him from delivering his close-range rib-smashers... No wonder Floyd won.***

The question that boxing pundits of the past had about Amir Kahn was WHEN he was going to "step up" and WHEN would he be going for that title shot.... To which allegedly has consistently responded by saying "A few more fights, there are still some creases to be ironed out"... (Does anybody now think that Warren was simply trying to numerically bulk up Kahn's record?)

BUT NOW, the question MUST be: IF Kahn has what it takes to be world Champion?

The loss has called Kahn's ability to take a pauch into question... Throughout his whole career, Amir has insisted that he's still learning... But the learning period must come to an end sometime, and his victories over nameless opponents must stop... Amir has to do something SPECIAL to prove himself to be the "Next Big Thing" bill, which he has for so long relished being.

Looking back at last weekends fight, people should wonder if Kahn id defensively good enough to make it to the top (which he so desires)... Granted, he is FAST, has QUICK-FISTS and good FOOTWORK.... But what about his chin? Last weeks fiasco did him no favours...
What would happen if Kahnc ame up against an opponent who was stronger than him, exceptionally tough, and could came up with Kahn's running?
Would Kahn be able to withstand significant pressure from a hard-hitter?
Would Kahn be able to absorb punishment for lengthy periods of time?

The answer to the question (in my eyes) is a conclusive: NO...
Kahn has fell to the punches of Willie Limond (and who CANNOT be considered a great puncher) by any stretch of the imagination...

SO, WHERE DOES KAHN GO FROM HERE:
Typically, boxers will make a rapid return to the ring and get back to winning ways... But making a quick comeback fight against an average journeyman, makes him both predictable and unconvincing to the clever boxing pundits out there...

In my opinion Kahn should NOT campaign for a rematch against Prescott (if they are both as good as they both claim to be) then they will meet each other at the top sometime in the future... PLUS, the fact that I don't believe Prescott will sign for a re-match against Kahn, he has proven his point conclusively...

Kahn has to do something special now, people have waited to long on him making his move, and he has become unstuck much earlier than anyone expected.... Kahn has got exceptional ability... But maybe he's not as "GREAT" as we all thought he was...

My apologies if this thread has upest anyone, but these are my opinions... Any replys and comments are valid.

You need to develop a method of squeezing your thoughts into a choice few blunt sentences, much like The Overhanded One does.

My thoughts are: nobody will bother to read your essay.

I think Khan should use his legs - a lot. Stay mobile, avoid shots, pile up points, and use his speed. Defense is the key. He is chinny, so he needs to be taught a defence. Not a good defence. A GREAT defense.

While it is now established that he has a weak chin and as we know you can't put muscles on your chin he needs to learn to work around his weaknesses.

What happened on Saturday must have been humliating for Khan but he needed that because it should make him stop this ridiculous talk about facing the likes of Campbell, Pacquiao and Hatton.
He needs to go back to the beginning and work on how to defend and how to "roll with the punches," FFS he's only 21 years old so don't tell me it's too late to change his style. He needs to bin this Cuban trainer, get over to the States, find a well regarded trainer who specialises in defensive boxing and get some quality sparring in too.
