Does anybody have anything on Australian prelim fighter Sparrow Freeman?I believe that he was active from the late 70's until the mid 80's and was a very prolific boxer.

He certainly was an active fighter. I saw an article about his retirement in an old magazine and I think they said about 150 bouts. I have his record from 1978 - 1980 (in RRB 1981). I will enter his bouts with name fighters (in Australia) in this period as an intitail offering.

Colin: do you have the article about Freeman's retirement? According to the 1985 RRB, Freeman had 150 bouts, including 31 draws. Someone in Australia told me the figure 150 is much too low.

It was in a magazine called The Square ring. I'll try and dig it out but my memory is about 150. This was a statement, not a lsiting of bouts. That reminds me that one of these had the record (wins - losses - draws) of active fighters so he shpuld be listed in that as well. I'll see what I can find. If I recall the article said that he always gave value for money and that probably no fighter got as many showers as he did. A 'shower' is where coins are thrown into the ring after a bout in appreciation of the action - the fighters split it. (Does this tradition occur in other countries ?)

I remember reading that the money thrown into the ring after a fight is called nobbins.

No luck with the article on Freeman.
I did find his record summary through 1981. It was 106 bouts for 51 wins (8 by KO), 34 losses (5 by KO, 3 of these by injury and one on a disqualification) with 21 draws. He started in 1978 so these fights were in four years. I found fights for hi a s late as 1984 so the figure Matt quoted of about 180 bouts is certainly possible. I will keep looking for the article. I may have misplaced the magazine, certainly some from 1984 and 1985 are missing.
The active fighter inAustralia with the most bouts at that time was a little aboriginal fighter named Ceddy McGrady. Ceddy started in 1969 (June 4) and through 1881 had 134 fights. His record was only 33 (10) - 95 (28) - 6, but Ceddy could fight, at least in his early days. Unfortunately he lacked stamina and the zip he showed in the early rounds very quickly dissipated.

I knew Ceddy. If a fight went more than a few rounds he would claim stomach cramps.

His young brother Ray was the better boxer of the two.
