SPOILER - Casamayor v Marquez

Post by SticknMove »

Fantastic exhibition between two great counterpunchers with plenty of pop in their hands. There were so many close rounds that were fought within range in this relatively clean chess match. Both were trying to set traps. Casa predomniantly fought off the front foot and landed with plenty of left hands – he appeared to be quicker in the earlier rounds and had a very good argument in some of the later rounds. Marquez, landed with the sharper effective combos behind his stiff square shouldered backfoot to frontfoot style, for me, and did more damage.

Whilst the finish was conclusive I had Marquez up by a round or two. At 37 you wonder whether Casa has anything more to offer at this level and whether the age factor determined the outcome.

Absolutely made up for Marquez though. A really quality boxer/fighter.

Yay!

I love it when a fighter I really like proves me wrong -- see also: my prediction for Haye vs Macca ("Oh noes, Haye is weight-drained!" Un-huh) -- the "Datsue kvetches like an old woman & gets it completely wrong" streak continues!

Well impressed that Marquez knocked him out, as well. Fantastic win.

Marquez-Juan Diaz, anyone? I could see Marquez batting El Torito around like a fricking ping-pong ball, to be honest...

Marquez is one of my favourite fighters and severely underrated. A great technician and a level above his brother IMO. And the amazing thing his best weight is featherweight yet he continues to move up just so he can prove he is better than the pacman. BRING ON THE PACMAN!! :box: Just hope after his venture at WW with De La Hoya Pacman comes back down...these two have unfinished business..

Why did JMM win the Ring Belt? Surely Campbell should be the champ?

This Ring belt will become disgusting now that it appears it is now a sanctioning belt.

Oscar is going to fcuk up the RING belt.

Casa got the ring sting belt for better Corrales and Corrales retained because Castillo couldn't make weight for their rematch.

yeah i disagreed with the ring giving casa the title.

it was a debateable one.

corrales failed to make the weight and he was the champion going in.

it should have been made vacant really.

i've only disagreed with the ring twice.

giving vitali the ring title and casa.

Has anyone else seen the stoppage? I thought it was a bit early, but the youtube vid is abysmal. Like cellophane has been put in front of the lens!

I watched the fight live (via a stream) and it was a really top class boxing match. Casamayor seemed to be landing left hooks at will in the first couple of rounds, but Marquez wasn't going to let that continue. The accuracy of Marquez's punches was amazing; almost 50% in some rounds. He broke Casamayor down bit by bit and closed the show in style.

Good fight!!!

I thought the stoppage was 50/50. It was the 11th round, with 5 seconds to go, Cassa deserved to see the end of that round, then again, the health and concerns of a fighter is important, and Cassa took some onslaught. Marquez is a superb Finisher!!

Marquez would have been all over him in those 5 seconds. I think the ref made the right decision.

So a Meldrick Taylor type stoppage then?

Or was he out on his feet ready to fall ala Zertuche v Pavlik?

The ref seemed to dive on him without giving him a chance to rise. But the video wasn't great.

Finally Marquez catches a break! So glad he won. He's been robbed so many times in the past, it's about time he saw his name up in lights. A definite Hall of Famer.

Yeah, Marquez looks better and better.

Unpromising start to his career (at top level), when he looked too tame losing to Norwood. Many felt JMM won, but he didn't show the fire.

He had a lot of cagey performances - including a dull one (Salido? Polo?) on the Corrales-Castillo undercard whih didn't help. It looked like he'd never quite fulfill his potential (i.e. shown in the Pac draw and the stoppage of Medina).

But after losing to Chris John in Indonesia and being dropped by Top Rank, he really woke up. KO'd those 2 tough southpaws (Jaca, Jandaeng) on Showtime, beat Barrera in a dramatic fight, in much more aggressive performances.

Recently, he's been really willing to let rip. The Pac rematch was an epic (I thought JMM won by 2 pts), regardless of who got the decision. And now JMM has beaten one of the trickiest & underrated counter punchers in the world, Casa.

I actually think he's eclipsed the achievements of Barrera and Morales.

Great fighter without doubt. How many more great performances does he have left? Looks like the bigger, younger Juan Diaz next.

Casamayor is years past his best. He's a shadow of the fighter from his initial superfeather title reign.

That said marquez is not young either and being above his best weight, this was a solid win for him.

I think he is already. He's a Mike McCallum style of great, i.e. the biggest names were steered away from him (namely Naz, Barrera, Morales) and more fashionable fighters get the nod in close fights. Losing to Pac is like Toney twice getting the benefit of the doubt vs McCallum. IMO, nothing wrong with any of JMM's performances that came after the John fight.

If there were any Marquez level fighters up at light heavyweight, Hopkins, Calzaghe and Tarver would be economy beefburger by now.

I like that Marquez comes back from the defeats (John, Pac II, disputed by a lot of ppl) and moves onto massive, memorable wins (Barrera, Casamayor) at a higher weight.

I think he'll have a hard time vs the fresh, young and strong Juan Diaz. Also think Soto beats him at 135, busts him up with straight hard shots.

Certainly Casa is past his best. Whereas, ironically, since Marquez has slowed down, he's put more in his punches, taken more risks, and his career has benefited from it.

But Casa is a very tricky fighter, was still good going by the Katsidis KO (Juan Diaz couldn't stop Katsidis), and was the bigger man. Also, to stop Casa is a big achievement.
