Will Haye will be a world champ by the end of 2009 ???

Post by mark thompson »

I think he will be a world champ, i know there are doubts about his chin, and Carl Thompson who knocked Haye out was a big super mw but that fight was a big step up in class for Haye and one that he took to soon imo.

It's definitely within his grasp, but it's not going to be easy. He's aiming at Wlad Klitschko in order to become a World champion. From hearing Haye talk, he has obviously spent a lot of time watching Klitschko and seems to be fully preparing himself for the potential fight.

A lot depends on Haye's opponents (probably 2) before Klitschko. The first looks likely to be Kevin Johnson. Is Johnson the right choice? Only time will tell. Haye needs to beat these guys. I have a feeling Haye might not face a big puncher before Klitschko, and will be aiming to close the show before Klitschko lands on him.

yeah i think i agree with you there Asterix, imo he should be looking at someone like Tony Thompson and i think Haye would take Valuev apart if he would get past round 5 .

Actually there isnt too big a difference between Haye and Khan in terms of mentality and gameplan. Get the opponent out as quickly as possible. Haye tried those tactics with Thompson, couldnt put him away, got knackered, and Thompson finished him off. Afterwards Haye trained harder and learned to pace himself which has worked a lot better for him. I think its silly to say Haye has a doubtful chin. He had nothing left when Thompson dropped him. Mormeck caught him with a decent punch but he got up to go on and win. CWs are big men and big punchers. I think Haye will do well at HW but not sure if he can beat Klitty, Peter or Chagaev.

I cant believe people keep comparing Haye's knockout to Khan's , there miles apart Prescott is unproven, where as Thompson was top quality opposition

I think his chin is too frail if i'm honest.

I hope i'm proved wrong.

But after seeing Lolenga Mock put him on his favourite street, i have my reservations.

Depends on the champ he faces but he doesn't have a heavyweight chin so they'll always have the punchers chance against him.

Yeah but that was a long time ago and since then (altho he has been put down again) he became the Undisputed cruiserweight champ, Im sure we could easily say that if Mock put him all over the place then Mormeck and Maccrinelli would have him out of there.

I think a lot hinges on the first opponent. I think Oleg Maskaev or Monte Barrett would be better opponents than the rumoured Kevin Johnson. Both the guys I mentioned are established, because of that they would be good barometers to gauge how Haye will do at heavyweight. They are also well ranked, Id imagine Maskaev will be top6 WBC, also they are eminaently beatable, I havent seen Maskaev's recent win in Russia but my feeling is if Haye makes it past 3 rounds without getting tagged Maskaev will be knackered and unable to win.

My take on it.

Haye was on his feet punching back when CAT beat him - not flat on his arse.

He got knocked down by a former world champion with great resistance and punch power.

Thompson didn't have the speed to make the power In his punches effective, he was very slow and still didn't find Haye hard to hit. Mormeck Isn't a puncher either, he wears a fighter down and Haye's legs when to jelly when hit square on the chin.

Actually I havent seen him get knocked down by a shot to the chin.

Here is the Thompson fight, you clearly see it was a shot to the top of the head that put his balance all over the place, and obviously he was knackered after throwing so many shots before. You get a clear shot of the knockdown in the last 10 seconds of the vid.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... mock&vt=lf

Mock knockdown about 6.15 in for the replay. Clearly right on the temple again, Haye's balance all over the place after that as a result of the temple shot. Watching that again come the end it was a terrible stoppage.

Mormeck knockdown. Last few minutes of the vid for the replay, again caught high up on the head which is the shot that puts him all over the place.

Point Im trying to make is he gets knocked down when he is whacked around the top of the head, he hasnt been put down from the shots right to his chin.

No the Mormeck one was on the chin he had his glove up one side making that look higher then It followed with a another chin shot.

Mock and Mormeck ain't punchers and they hurt him still. Despite using head movement he ain't so slick either, he still gets tagged.

Thompson lacked the reflexes to make the shots have that much sting and still hurt him despite having him out on his feet.

1st heavy shot on his chin and he's out.

He's just as likely to get hit on the top of the head as the chin in a fight, so you're point is what?

Has the talent... alot will depend on who is around and the route he is going to take.

If its Wlad, he's going to have to get some good sparring in... I think he has the tools to beat Wlad - but he's got to spar someone bigger, with power, far surperior strength, and excellent survival insticts. Wlad is hard to beat.

Haye has the power, speed and skill to do it.... but Wlad could old man him. Just as Mormeck was doing, till he gassed.

No my guess is he wont. You just have to watch the Mock knockdown, where he was seconds from disaster, to be fairly sure he's going to get flattened by some durable but ordinary heavyweight before he gets to Wlad ( though not this next bum they're supposedly lining up ).

Should be an interesting ride though, once he steps up - a real high wire act, one misstep and it's all over.

I think he can pick up a belt but he will get iced before he gets to klitschko, especially if he plans on fighting at 235lbs +

Absolutely no reason wahtsoever for him to have taken so long to fight, especially after the stroll he had against enzo

That's the thing though, he's only planning on having 2 fights before taking on Wlad Klitschko (next Summer), so I doubt he will be matched against someone who will be really tough to beat.

I have to agree. I cannot put the image of Haye gamboling like a new born foal when Mock hit him, and barely making it up, and then surviving more rough moments before finally getting the stoppage.

He was also beaten by Thompson, and Mormeck had him in a world of trouble. Neither man has the power of a genuine heavyweight, big a hitter as Thompson was at cruiser, there are far bigger hitters.

While he may turn out to be a bit more durable if he was weight drained at 190 and 200, he is also going to be in with far more durable, bigger, stronger men than before.

If the genuine big man can take his punches without wincing, and start dishing it out, then he's got big problems. The likes of Povetkin, Ibragimov, Peter may just be able to walk through him.

As you say though, I look forward to seeing Haye give it a go, his attitude in the light of the modern game where fighters avoid genuine challengers like the plague is highly commendable, and if he succeeds, I'll be the first to eat humble pie and congratulate the man.

Yes, and now the concern is - something that wasn't picked up really by anyone... that when Booth/Haye claimed on the Eve of the Enzo Mac fight - that cruiserweight making is a problem and the "dead at the weight" was a ploy to get the contract.... that meant Mormeck nearly KO'd a 100% Haye, a Haye who didn't have difficulties he claimed.

Something I though Warren/Macc/Calzaghe should have used immediately to try and win the psychological battle. Instead of sitting the shocked at the revelation Haye can make Cruiser comfortably enough.

How constructive, boxrec.
What is it about UK boxing fans ?
At least he's having a go.
Maybe he'll fail miserably - or maybe he'll prevail.
Why are you hoping for failure ?
