Haye v Chapman.....clash of the heavyweight titans

Post by boxingchat »

When David Haye announced that he was to be promoting himself, at heavyweight, with a multi-fight deal with Setanta and the O2, he stated (as did Setanta) that he would be fighting "quality heavyweights" from the beginning of the deal.I, aswell as many other boxing fans that I have spoke to, felt genuinely excited by Hayes claims of cleaning up the heavyweight division and beating the best put there in the process.

So.........who is JD Chapman? An unbeaten (who has beaten nobody) heavyweight who I for one have never heard of. All the promises of big names and big promotions, both from promoter/fighter and broadcaster, have been found seriously short.Chapmans last win was against the world renowned Rich Boruff (KO 2) in the Shaikh Rashid Hall, Dubai. This is obviously why Hayemaker have gone for this option. Proven quality track record.

He is ranked highly (WBO 7, WBA 9, WBC 13), but with the current state of the heavyweight division, surely Haye has to be fighting one of the bigger names IF he is to be taken seriously as a heavyweight fighter (and promoter), and secondly if he wants to fill the O2 (did anyone else hear that pin drop?). Boxrec have this guy ranked at 114.........and the IBO have him at 92. Maybe they have missed something the governing bodies have noticed in this guy.

I think its a piss take for Haye to declare himself a promoter then behave like this.......and i for one hope that nobody is stupid enough to buy a ticket for the O2 show.

Seriously disapointed.

Source for it being announced as Haye's opponent?

According to Stacy Goodson, JD's former Promoter and friend, he's quit Boxing because of the harassment he's received about not taking the fight and can't be bothered with Boxing anymore.

Retired??? Blimey, that just about sums up the type of opponent they were looking at there.
They better sort this ASAP, before it decends further into farce.

Better bite the bullet and go for Johnson, who sounds like he's more than up for it. Decent test, but sounds like Haye's camp know it could well prove harder than they want at this stage, more so with an easy path to Wlad looking likely.

He should have just settled for Matt Skelton or Audley Harrison, he'd have made a ton more money and it'd look far better on his record especially if he managed to stop Skelton, plus it'd be more egg on Fwanks face. :D

Now it could be....wait for it.....Ray Mercer. Not ranked in top 10? No worries, they're getting a petition sorted for the WBO to rank him! Unreal

What an utter load of bollocks.

Imagine Manchester United 'petitiioning' the FA to have Accrington Stanley ranked in the premiership.

If the WBO sanction this, they really are a running joke, though no more so than any of the other governing bodies to be fair.

Mercer is bloody ancient, he's older than God's dog, sure, he's got a good chin, but he can't really fight any more, he creaks more than a 16th century frigate.

unfortunatly all of this is being held in the open by Hayemaker, it might be prodent to conduct some of this in private, if you were a manager of a heavyweight than you now know that Haye is getting a bit desparate for an opponent, so you can add a bit more money to a deal.

Anyone who believes that has taken more whacks to the cranium than Ray Mercer. That thing sent out this morning is nothing but a press release issued by Mercer and his people. It's a follow-up to the one they did last week calling out Haye for broke-ass Ray.

I think it's safe to say Mercer and Haye will never fight.

PS since when did you have to petition the WBO to rank a hopeless and underserving fighter?

The list of embarrassing WBO top 10 ranked 'contenders' from 1989 to present would be completely impossible to write.

Dear Mr Sports Network
Once upon a time there was a BIG black pot and this BIG black pot went over to the kettle and said "You are black!"

When was the last time a SN fighter unified is division by the age of 27 (or even in their prime) and moved up in weight?
