So how did Klitschko look?

Post by bennie »

Didn't watch the fight. Couldn't watch the fight after Skelton-Sprott.
What did Klit look like? Is he the saviour? Or is Lennox Lewis already in secret training?

Taped and watched it from ZDF. He looked good enough, he'd give LL all he could handle again - asked him to make a comeback in the dressing room I think.
Played it very cautious, hurt a few times and gave Sanders a lot of respect - rightly too. Sanders was walking round the ring, not throwing much, looking to sucker Vitali onto a TNT left hook. He was much faster than Vitali, but looked a bit overweight.
Brave guy though, took so many right hands I was wondering if Vitali was an overated puncher.

Dr K showed a good boxing brain though, kept his hands up and speared Corrie with his jab all night long.
Good enough fighter to reign for a long time I think.

Sanders has a good chin. The right hand that Rahman did him with also did Lewis, and the Nate Tubbs loss was one of those freak results that happen occasionally in the heavyweight division (think of Mercado-Berbick).
Incidentally, when Sanders was lanuishing as WBU heavyweight champion and grossly underrated, a match was signed and sealed between him and Danny Williams in South Africa (Sanders got injured and the fight was cancelled). Can you imagine what Sanders would have done to Danny! He did Sprott in 85 seconds. Danny may have lasted a few seconds longer.

Do you think this because of his ability as a fighter or because it's a weak division? Or a combination of the two?

I think he is a good fighter in a weak division but just can't see him getting past 4/5 meaningfull defences.

I was dissapointed actually, Sanders gave it his all but was grossly out of shape and was blowing after the first round. Sanders was as tough as old boots and really tried when he was in there, but clearly hadn't tried very hard in the 6 weeks leading to the bout.

I don't think we learned much more about Klitchko that we all ready didn't know, he has a solid enough chin and solid, but robotic, skills. I think we learned more about Sanders what a heart he showed.

I came away with the conclusion that had Sanders prepared like a champion then he would be walking away with the belt, this is something I would not expect to be typing. I would like to see Vitali in with a younger guy who can maybe outlast him (cause his stamina isn't great). I can't believe I am saying this but (IMO) Klitchko vs Ruiz isn't a forgone conclusion.

I would favour Klitchko, but wouldn't be at all surprised if Grizzly Adams cause another sensation in the way he knows best. He has the stamina and the style to mess Dr IronFist up and is solid in the chin department himself.

I would FAVOUR Tyson to beat Klitchko, I think Tyson moves better and hits faster and harder than Sanders. Klitchko looked very open at times and definately didn't like Sanders' power - I think Tyson would catch him in the opening 4 rounds, and he will do a MUCH better job on a hurt Klitchko than Sanders did.

Mainly, yes. I just can't see too much out there at the moment. As for Tyson, I reckon Vitali's chin looks good enough to see out the two round Tyson charge, then he'd take him apart much like LL did.

Ruiz? Yeeeuuuukkkk!

Bennie, I remember the Danny Williams match being talked about, I thought it was a crazy fight to take - Sanders would've obliterated him.

Deeply unimpressed by Vitali. Sanders is solid, but it doesn't look like Vitali punches as hard as some people say. He's robotic, limited and his stamina looks iffy.

That said, he had a game plan, stuck to it and didn't get involved in too much macho bullshit. In the current heavyweight scene he'll do well. As Stu said though, Ruiz may well be able to beat him, although I would rather gargle with razorblades than watch that fight.

If he has called Lewis out after the fight then it was a classless act. An out of shape, old, all-but-retired Lewis took his best shots and tore his face to shreds. Now he want's a piece of a presumably fatter, older, very-much retired Lewis? Big man.

Vitali looked like a one-dimensional robot who sickeningly telegraphs everything and possesses very little defense. He was wide open as he stalked Fat Man Sanders, so obviously loading up the right hand, waiting to get him into a corner where he could administer a beat down. Hilarious how when he did this Sanders repeatedly clocked him with a counter left.

I was rooting for Sanders, but his defense was just as woeful, if not more, than Klitschko's. I was rooting for him because, to me, they are both shit, and neither would achieve greatness, therefore I go with the man who looks like he's just came out the local Taste of India, been given a shot at the Heavyweight title and decides to recklessly throw wild bombs everytime the 'real champ' gets close to him. Well done to Sanders, he didn't even go down.

Klitschko is probably the best of a despicable division that I can hardly stand watching anymore. I was kind of hoping he would rise to the occasion and give us an iconic moment in the fight, like all would-be great champions do e.g. Dempsey - Willard, Louis - Schmelling, Marciano - Walcott, Ali - Frazier/Foreman, Tyson - Berbick, etc. They are all fights you can remember in an instant, but last night's fight had nothing special, nothing extra or magic about it. To be honest, this fight will be utter crap to watch in years to come.

Not a bad fight, Vitali was petrified of Sanders left hand and physically ran in reverse whenever it landed, which it did a little too often for comfort early on. That was what kept the fight close, Sanders power made Vitali worried and that is probably why he stayed long and pawed the jab, when Sanders was knackered Vitali moved in for the kill and landed the jab better and some good right hands. Overall Klitschko is pretty one dimensional and some would say limited, but he does certain things well and is pretty strong. His chin stood up well even though he was shaken early by a straight left, so what? It's Boxing your going to get hit and he reacted well, the right man won age wise and i want to see him unify the titles like he hinted at rather than become a man obsessed with a Lewis rematch. Boxing needs to move on not back.

Vitali looked reasonably good and Sanders is an awkward SOB to fight, particularly when all he does is try to nail you with a counter left cross.

I dont like the way Vitali stands stock straight.

Fast hands give him trouble and, although he has a good chin, he leaves it in the air.

IMO with their respective styles, a sub 225 Tyson could give him loads of trouble, coming under his jab with big left hooks.

Vitali's chin is waiting to be knocked off. He needs to get it down.

I totally agree with this.LL will be nearing 40yo if this fight should happen.Thats well past the sell by date!.

Also,in last round in the LL vs VK fight, LL caught VK with a vicous uppercut & VK fell onto LL and held on.I think VK was on the verge of being stopped anyway .
